world class, NY chessplayer, Reshevsky rival,quit in his 20's, gave up world title chance due to Soviet cheating

Yes, before Fischer, Reuben Fine in 1948 gave up chess claiming Soviet match fixing (more truthful he had to make a living --even Reshevsky worked full-time as a CPA). In the 1930's Fine left NY for the European chess circut and was reckoned to be world number 1 or 2 in 1940. His book is a pleasure to read; 50 annotated games against world class GM's and solid masters. The notes are easy to follow (except they are in descriptive). Every game starts with a well written description of the opponent/the tournament/life on the chess circut/background stuff. Game notes are adequate, in the style of the era.

Fine was considered to be a technician - skilled at highly accurate play, a good eye for opponents weaknesses an efficient ability to hold a long-term positional intiative, adept at king attacks, an endgame specialist (he wrote Basic Chess Endings - the all-time endgame encyclopedic classic over one summer!) knowledgable openings (he wrote Modern Chess Openings over another summer!!) and a good calculater of variations. Given the chance (meaning no WWII) he might have become world champion. My only complaint about this book is that it was written 10 years after his retirement and the notes to this book do not have the depth found in Great Moments in Modern Chess (his best book - where he really gets into detail how players think during the game, opening theory, deep analysis from 1848).

Lessons from My Games is one of the best chess biographies, the game collection is good (excellent price) and a good study book for learning technique if you are 1600 or above.

They played chess before 1985!

This collection of 50 of Reuben Fine's games was among the earliest ones that I read. It is also among the few titles that I have read from cover to cover.
For those who don't know, Fine was one of the world's best in his day and a serious championship contender. His record includes a tie for 3rd at Nottingham 1936 and for first at Avro 1938. He has wins against many of the greats.
Fine's annotations are the type that I prefer; no long paragraphs of dense variations. Instead, he nicely mixes moves and text to illustrate his points. As well, each game is introduced by a short anecdote or a description of the circumstances. It adds a human touch missing from many other best game collections.
Along with battles featuring his American contemparies, Fine also shows his talents versus the likes of Alekhine, Capablance, Flohr, Botvinnik and Lasker.
I would heartily recommend this book for players rated from 1200 to 2000.

Fine is Fine

Fine was, before Bobby Fischer, perhaps the strongest American player of the twentieth century. The only caveat to this claim is the strength of Samuel Reshevsky, the boy wunderkind. Fine's games are solid, well explained, and interesting to play over. Though theory has advanced, as it should, one does well to work through this man's corpus here. Well worth the work and an educational read.

About the Author

The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) was established in 1959 to formulate and publish systems of classification of cancer, including staging and end-results reporting, that will be acceptable to and used by the medical profession for selecting the most effective treatment, determining prognosis, and continuing evaluation of cancer control measures. The AJCC is composed of 18 member organizations, and its activities are administered by the Chicago-based American College of Surgeons. ��

This time his subject is an African-American family freed from slavery in 1832. After settling on untamed land along the Wabash River in Indiana, Papa returns frequently to the Tennessee plantation to guide other loved ones north. (It is unclear here whether he is guiding them as a conductor on the Underground Railroad or if they, too, have been freed.) Eventually, his bustling settlement warrants railroad tracks and a name (in actuality, Lyles Station, not "Freedom"). Told from the point of view of James, who is seven when the story begins, the narrative is brief but full of memorable images: "Papa called Lettie a short drink of water, because she was little and wriggly, and he called me a long gulp of air, because I was tall and full of talk." Allen's scenes, in muted earth tones and foggy blues, are close-up cameos, his pastel edges fading into the white page?an effective technique, suggesting a sequence of rising and falling memories. Some of the "recollections" give way to full, double-page, colored-pencil illustrations, making this a successful choice for groups despite the subtle hues. While much is available on the Underground Railroad for the picture-book audience, parallels to the "Little House" experience for African Americans are relatively scarce. Ages 5-8. After being freed from slavery in 1832, seven-year-old James Starman, his sister, and their parents walk from Tennessee to Indiana, where they decide to settle. Papa plants crops and builds a cabin; Mama sews clothes and teaches her children to read and write; and, whenever he can, Papa returns to Tennessee, transporting other friends and relatives to safety in the North. As the years go by, an entire town of African Americans develops, which the residents name Freedom. Allen's illustrations, rendered in blue pastels with accents of brown, red, and gold, suit the upbeat mood of the story and portray many common frontier activities. Based on the true story of the founding of Lyle Station, Indiana, this will make an excellent addition to primary history units and may spur students to discover the histories of their own towns. Setting his story during a time when antislavery sentiment was gaining momentum, Sanders (Here Comes the Mystery Man, 1993, etc.) tells the story of a Tennessee family of freed slaves who make their way north to begin a new life in Indiana. James Starman narrates this metaphor-studded tale of a lesser-known side of frontier settlement. His family follows the drinking gourd for more than a month of nights as the ``buttery bowl of the moon filled up then emptied again.'' A kind fisherman with a ``face as wrinkled as an old boot'' carries them across the Ohio to the free soil of Indiana. A Quaker gift of seed and a borrowed mule and plow enable them to work the land, eventually drawing family and friends from the South to form a new community they call Freedom. Inspired by the true story of Lyles Station, Indiana, Sanders sketches with broad strokes a fictionalized portrait of another kind of struggle for freedom. Allen's trademark pastels are rendered in predominant smoky blues that provide powerful keyhole glimpses of family and farm set starkly against white canvas, accentuating the austerity of the days of frontier homesteading. Six Suites JS Bach -for Horn

Can't really critique the music...it is classic. We purchased this book for our daughter who is performing a solo in front of judges in school. The kids are penalized if the music is supposed to have an accompanist and they don't play with one. And usually, if you find a French Horn solo piece sans accompanist, it is very difficult. Having returned to playing the horn after a number of years off it is good to play these old friends.
Wendell has taken into consideration the range and playing characteristics of the horn in this arrangement, so that the suites are a true joy to practice and perform.
Though never easy they are a staple of my musical day.

What a rad book!

Whoah!

What a rad book!

I didn't know what to expect with Giant Days, and haven't followed John Allison's other work. I picked it up based only on the price-tag and a hearty recommendation from a friend. Giant Days is adorably illustrated, and cleverly written, almost like a Cartoon Network show (like Regular Show or Clarence) directed towards adults. I don't understand why it's on the Boom! Box imprint, which I understood to be child-friendly, (this book is about college students drinking, smoking and talking about sex) but that's hardly a complaint. The characters have a lot of presence, and there's plenty of potential in this odd, episodic, web-comic-esque format. More than anything though, this book genuinely made me laugh a whole bunch, and that's about the highest compliment I can pay.

Yes! The "Bad Machinery" Guy

So, I got two pages into this and thought - "Hey. This looks, reads and certainly feels like the webcomic 'Bad Machinery'". Well, I was right. They're both by John Allison. If you like "Bad Machinery", which is my favorite webcomic (now graphic novel) series, you should try this. If you like this, you should try "Bad Machinery". If you haven't tried either, well, you should try both.

Same sort of setup, although the "Bad Machinery" people are in high school and these characters are in university. Deadpan humor, quirky plots, attractive young people with loads of personality, and a great sense of the humorous in the characters' lives. There is a lot of sarcastic, insightful, and good-natured banter.

Our heroines are Daisy, (quiet, calm), Esther, (edgy drama queen), and Susan, (narrator and most "normal" one). Ed has a sneaker for Esther. New guy is a former beau of Susan's. The book collects four magazine issues into four chapters. Each chapter has a short more or less complete story and a piece of the girls' larger story arc. The plots revolve around the kind of things you'd expect to happen to first year university women, although there is usually an odd or unexpected quirk to the tale.

But while the stories are interesting enough, the real appeal is in the interactions of these three roommates. They are independent, solid, intelligent, funny, and attractive people. They are also vulnerable, young and inexperienced. So, you get these smart women putting on brave faces and needling and supporting each other as they navigate the perilous shoals of growing up. You like them, you are amused by them, you are sympathetic about their travails and pleased by their successes.

Allison has the ability to create truly engaging characters who connect with and appeal to the reader. They are articulate, observant and witty, while remaining real and relateable. It's hard to come up with more engaging and entertaining characters than those created by Allison, and I was delighted to see this new series. As in "Bad Machinery" the drawings bring out the best in the material. This work is done by Lissa Treiman, not Allison, but it is equally dynamic and perfectly complements the characters and the stories. Illustrations are crisp and clear. There is a bit of exaggeration for effect, but the drawing is mostly realistic and very expressive in a colorful "high end comic" sort of way.

So, to my mind this is another quality-at-bat for Allison, and a very happy find.

I wanted to like this comic because the art style is appealing and the characters themselves are interesting but the pacing is very odd and choppy, making me go back panels thinking I missed something. I'm afraid I won't be buying the next installment.

Must buy for all Resident Evil fans

There are 544 pages total from the two archives. Archives I covers Resident Evil 0, 1, 2, 3 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Archives II covers Resident Evil 4 and 5.

The content covers the stories, characters, creatures, items, art, timeline and keyword profiles. There's a lot to read, uncover and reminisce about if you've played the games.

I like the character and creature profiles. For the characters, they are really detailed in the background. Also included are relationship maps that show you who's linked to who. The stories and profiles serve as a good recap to how the plot has evolved over the many games, and years. There are plenty of video game screenshots with the narrative.

The concept art includes character designs, creatures and background art. While there are many pieces, they are printed rather small so it's not easy to see the details.

Overall, this book is a must-buy for all Resident Evil fans. It's quite a bargain considering the price and the amount of content included.

Delayed Gratification

After numerous changes in estimated shipping dates by Amazon, and further delivery delays due to Hurricane Sandy, I finally received my order (after a 14 hour day at work) last night! I left the box on the table and went to bed. This morning I had enough time to open the box and flip through the first book and my initial opinion is extremely positive. The bundle arrives as two separate books. Both have 2012 publishing dates.

Archives I covers Resident Evil 0 to Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Archives II covers Resident Evil 4 and 5

I think there is a tremendous wealth of information in these books, especially for someone like me who's only knowledge of the Resident Evil franchise has come from just the movies. The first RE game I ever played was Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City. I also have Resident Evil 6 Archives so now I have a fair chunk of Resident Evil games to play through. Due to the wealth of information I thought some of the illustrations were quite small but this might be due to the fact that these are screen captures from older games in a resolution that's sub-standard today. But that would be my only complaint.

Now, material from Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City and Resident Evil 6 are not presented. Perhaps there will be a Resident Evil Archives III...?

If you love the Resident Evil series you will love these books. If you're a Resident Evil n00b like me, well for the games at least, you will find tons of background and information on Resident Evil.

A worthwhile bundle for Resident Evil fans.

With my video, I flip through some of the pages of the books to give you a small idea of what they each look like. I apologize for the lighting if it is not perfect, but the lighting in my apartment is pretty low. Also my camera's microphone picked up some load music from outside, but hopefully none of this hurts the video enough and you can at least get something from it.

As you can see from above, both books cover just about everything you could want about the main installments in the Resident Evil series (the most recent installments like Revelations and 6 are not included). The books do a good job of breaking down the storylines for each individual game. Don't get me wrong, there is no substitute for actually playing the games and getting every ounce of the plot, but the books do a commendable job of breaking down the plot of each game and catching up old and new fans of the series. The Character and Creature sections also do a nice job of complementing the Story section by giving you further information about the many characters and enemies in the RE universe.

The Item section actually covers all the items you pick up throughout each game. This section might seem unnecessary to some, but it is kind of neat to see how many items all the games actually included, not to mention how many were reused throughout the series (remember the crank). The Art section includes concept art, background images, and so on. The Keyword section includes more information about the different organizations, facilities, and viruses found within Resident Evil series. The Database basically includes transcripts of all the files you can pick up while playing the Resident Evil games as well as some additional content.

Like I said before, these two books include just about everything you could want to know about most of the main installments in the Resident Evil series. However, there are a few negatives worth mentioning. For one, while reading Vol. 1 I did pick up on a few errors, minor things at times like an image from one game being tagged as being from another. I also noticed a bit of an inaccuracy with the time frame from an event that took place around RE 0 and RE 1, as well as other little things here and there. None of this makes Vol. 1 unreadable or worthless, but hardcore fans will probably pick up on some of these errors. I also can't comment on if these are the same errors the original release of Vol. 1 had or less as I never purchased the original release. Vol. 2 for the most part is fine and if you do pick up on some errors, it is nothing major at all.

Now my only other issue is that of missed opportunities. For example, Vol. 1 includes a decent art section which even has some concept art for Resident Evil 1.5 (the original version of Resident Evil 2). Unfortunately we only get about three pages of art for Resident Evil 1.5. Yes you read correctly, only three pages. This feels like such a wasted opportunity. I do not deny, most of us can just search online for images and videos of RE 1.5, but it would have been great to get some additional content for it within Vol. 1 of this bundle. Certainly this is not a deal breaker or anything, just disappointing, especially for someone like me who enjoys concept art so much.

One last disappoint for me would be the lack of any behind the scene content on the Resident Evil series. I know these books are supposed to be like encyclopedias for the Resident Evil series and not making of books, but it sure would have nice to have some interviews with the developers or other things like that. They could have included vintage interviews and I would have been happy, maybe even a look at the Capcom offices where the games were made. Again, the lack of any of this is not a deal breaker, just disappointing (at least to me anyway).

Regardless of my minor complaints, the Resident Evil Archives 1 and 2 bundle is truly worth the money. There is so much content include in both volumes that they truly justify the price point. This is especially true if your new to the series and want to catch up on games you missed. However, even long times fans will probably find something they like in these two books, whether it be the art section or any of the other numerous sections included.
