One of the greats

The Art of Ramona Fradon is a handsome celebration of one of the finest--and most unsung--comic book artists of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. This lavishly illustrated book-length interview, conducted by artist Howard Chaykin, is informative and often amusing. According to Fradon, the big issue during her DC career wasn't that she was a woman, but that she never had any particular affinity for comic books, particularly superheroes. Naturally, after a stint on DC's Gang Busters, Ramona segued into many years of superhero comics: Aquaman, Metamorpho, Plastic Man, Freedom Fighters, and The Super-Friends. And she did lively, engaging work every time.

The particulars of her drawing style are comic-book "classic": heroes with heavy jaws and wavy hair; heroines with big eyes and fabulous bodies; villains with permanent scowls below shelf-like brows. Bodies are captured in fluid, elastic motion. Fradon's work is superficially whimsical, but her figures have weight and mass, and like any good illustrator, she can draw anything: vehicles, architecture, natural landscapes, attire (she understands how clothing falls and drapes as well as any comics artist I've ever seen), imaginative weapons and science-fiction machinery--all of it. She's part Dick Sprang (the "good Batman artist" of the 1950s) and part Jack Cole, who, like Fradon, drew with great skill and considerable wit.

Fradon is a capable inker, but her work looked especially rich when inked by Charles Paris (who brought his sure touch to Sprang's Batman) and, much later, Bob Smith. (A couple examples of Ramona as inked by Vince Colletta aren't exactly horrifying, but you can see why she wasn't crazy about what he was doing to her pencils.)

The book is oversized and printed on sturdy, glossy stock. Interior design is smart and appealing. Pages of complete stories are arrayed across many spreads. Art is reproduced in pristine black and white as often as it is in color--and the black and white is gorgeous. Ramona is a fine storyteller, and the crisp b&w images highlight her affinity for shadow, and her splendid ability to "spot blacks"--to lay down black areas that give panels and entire pages drive and rhythm. Many latter-day sketches, inked pieces, and full-color commissioned works are also reproduced; likewise many examples of Ramona's 1980-95 work on the Brenda Starr newspaper strip. The strip was a grind for Fradon, and it's obvious from her comments that she got virtually no fulfillment from it. But it's handsome stuff, in the vintage Dale Messick style, but much better drawn! (The final Brenda Starr scripter, BTW, was the Chicago Tribune's Mary Schmich, who won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. Fradon simply recalls her as "a journalist.")

The book has a generous selection of covers, but not all of them are Fradon's work. Simple I.D. captions note title, issue number, and year, but don't identify the artists. And that's my only complaint: Some readers will assume the work is Fradon's, and meanwhile, guys like Curt Swan, Nick Cardy, Gil Kane, Joe Kubert, Mike Sekowsky, Bruno Premiani, and others don't receive their due.

Fradon family photos that appear throughout the book are a special treat, and Ramona's description of her professional work as a Faust scholar is very intriguing.

In all, a must-have book for Silver Age fans, and anyone who appreciates superior cartooning.

Wonderful!

This is fun and informative book that is both a biography of Ramona Fradon and a showcase for her artwork. There is an in-depth Q&A with Howard Chaykin that runs through the book and lots of sample pages, covers and sketches. There's also a short biography of one of her main editors, Murray Boltinoff, as well as several other people Ramona worked with during her career. She is mostly remembered for her DC Comics work on Aquaman, Plastic Man and Metamorpho. My favorite is her Super Friends artwork from the 1970's. After that she worked on the Brenda Starr newspaper comic strip for fifteen years. I really enjoyed the Q&A format of the biography as it gives you a feel for her personality. The book is nicely printed on glossy paper and mainly full color throughout. For those interested in comic art of the past this is highly recommended.

The comics field is still a mostly dominated field altho women have made great strides in the industry...lots of talent out there now. Needles to say I was totally unaware of Ramona Fradon n her work...until I purchased this book. What an amazing talent n in a time where there were very few female comic artists n writers. Once I looked thru the book I recognized many pieces of her glorious talented artwork. This is a well put together book. If you're a fan of female comic talent...or just comics in general, you'll most likely enjoy this book.

Every Bit As Good as the First Volume

The "Reconquista" story continues is this second omnibus volume, and, once again. I am left at the edge of my seat wondering what this second change in the story from the anime heralds (unlike in my review of the first volume, I'll not spoil it here). As usual, Saito isn't quite as much of an idiot, Louise isn't quite as cruel, but the Reconquista storyline is better developed.

I still can't quite get over the art. The characters just don't look right (except Tabitha). But I've still preordered the next volume, so it's still good.

Drawn in from the first page

I was given a free ebook version from the author for an honest review and all I have to say is it was very good. I was drawn in from the first page and couldn't put it down. I am now on the sequel to it, Charmed Again, and find it is just as good.

The story plot is good versus evil but with a twist. There is a good love story, because what good book doesn't have that. I won't reveal the end but it is worth reading. Every little twist and turn in the book made me not able to put it down and I found myself staying up way longer than I should just to see what happened next.

Lindy Zart is now my new favorite author!

Read this immediately!

I got this book a couple weeks ago for my Kindle. It took interesting enough, so I put it up towards the top of my "TO READ" list (some books end up on the list for years). Finally, about a week after I got it, I decided to read it. It helped that I was heckled by Tawnya. I read the first paragraph and sighed - convinced I just got myself into some silly teen drama that I'd have to force myself to read. I'll admit, I put off reading the book for a couple days because of it. ...but then I started it. Actually started it.

One word to explain what happened once I passed page one: DAMN. That's right, I said it. I had to force myself to put the book down a few times, because I swear I stopped breathing in certain parts. (Lindy Zart is obviously trying to kill me, just want you all to know this)

All and all, it was a great story. Truly it was. I was able to get into the characters, and I liked them. They felt real.

Still Charmed!

I received this book as a gift in February by the author and I still find myself thinking about it. I so enjoyed all the characters, Taryn, Creed and Luke. The character Taryn was entertaining and I loved her spunkiness and comical side. The other two otherworldly characters Creed and Luke had their own agenda which included Taryn and the battle between good and evil ensues. Charmed was a constant page turner and was hard to put down. Once I finished reading Charmed, I quickly purchased the second installment Charmed Again! I highly recommend this paranormal novel. P.S., I developed a soft spot for Creed.

Another Kennedy family saga, this one focusing on the women, from Irish forebears to feminist Rory Kennedy, daughter of Robert and Ethel. For Kennedy aficionados, much of the material is familiar. In 1849, immigrants Bridget Murphy and Patrick Kennedy met on the boat from Ireland. Nine years after their marriage, she was a widow with four children who worked as a domestic servant, then bought and ran a variety store. In some ways, for the women of the Kennedy family, Bridget's story is as inspiring as it gets. From Rose, who married Bridget's grandson, Joe, to some two dozen grandchildren, author Leamer (King of the Night, 1989) tells a story that is as sad as it is tragic, with Rose as its center. In the grip of the Roman Catholic Church--which saw the role of a woman as mother and moral center--Rose changed from an ambitious, lively, curious girl to a wife and mother whose emotions were rigidly controlled and whose mechanisms of denial so highly refined that she could accept her husband's lovers--notably Gloria Swanson--into her home. She passed much of that legacy on to her daughters Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Jean. Open displays of tenderness were reserved for Rosemary, the retarded child, who was lobotomized and institutionalized out of the public eye. Kathleen is captured as the American who enchanted English society until her death in a plane crash; Eunice as the most successful in building a life of her own. Pat and Jean were not so lucky. The prickly paths of the daughters-in-law--Jackie, Joan, and Ethel--are included here as well. Although the ambitions of many of Rose's granddaughters, including Maria Shriver and Caroline Kennedy, have been tempered by marriage and children, theirs is a generation that seems to have shaken off the chains of Kennedy women as victims of a moral dichotomy. It isn't often that one mourns coming to the end of a book. Although The Kennedy Women covers 933 pages, I was saddened to find myself on the last page.

Very interesting book, but kinda longwinded at times in descriptions of events, etc. I am a Kennedy family fanatic and it took me over 6 months to read this.

The rarely told story of girls in Hitler Youth

The English title is slightly misleading in that the entire focus of this book is the League of German Girls. It makes clear the great attraction of the organization, one which leaves the participants with mixed feelings even today. Not only was the League a place for idealistic youth, it gave girls an opportunity unknown elsewhere in Nazi Germany to develop leadership skills. It offered poorer and rural girls opportunities for entertainment and travel they would have been unlikely to experience otherwise. It also served the Nazi goal of diminishing the influence of parents over their children. Even so, this book shows that participation and amount of political indoctrination could vary by locale. It is fortunate that this work was translated into English so that more readers can understand this important facet of Nazi history.

Stats about growing up female in Nazi Germany

It was very dry, with some stories from individuals about what it was like for them growing up in that area. It had a lot of stats, and listed rules, and how they were covered. Not quite what I was looking for, but still interesting.
