IMHO, this one was not as good as the 1st one simply because I can't root for a relationship if I only like 1 of the MCs. In Book 1, Dane was not only sweet and kind, but he seemed smart and proud of who he was. Here he was insecure, yes, but he was also extremely flaky when it came to what he wanted. I can understand being wary of men & relationships, and not wanting to get involved, but the way he kept pushing and pulling Jax's emotions - have sex, push him away, have sex, stop speaking to him - was frustrating and annoying. Maybe it was just the way it was written, but I didn't pity Dane at all, I didn't even like him. Not enough was given about why he was the way that he was. His father and ex-husband may have been verbally abusive and/or neglectful, but when Jax told Cade he'd treated him like every other man in his life, where did that come from? Nothing about other guys was really provided. Another thing that didn't make sense was Dane's never-fully-explained, "all over needles" body pain/excruciating headache/furniture destroying/nervous breakdown/blackout. What was that? He said it was something that he'd never done before, but he was willing to send his child away for the next time it happened? What as IT? How could he be so sure it would happen again? Why was he the only one who thought he might end up hurting the child? And he said he would often hear his father's voice and Isaac's voice, was he hearing other voices, too? He sounded like he could have used some serious counseling. You can't just write in something like that and leave it open-ended.

As for the action elements of the story, the "favor for a friend" that turns into "a deadly encounter " (according to the Amazon description) is all detailed in the first chapter. It's a short replay of the scene from Book 1 where Callan, Rhys, and Finn finally find out who's been causing all the trouble for them and it comes to a head. As for the "danger" that "looms" (LOL) when it's revealed who and what it is, it's rather anticlimactic. The set up also didn't make any sense, because what person who's been having 2 people take turns watching over him & his child (plus 1 running tap checks on his phone) and had a security system installed in his home, allows his newborn child completely out of his sight to go somewhere with a defenseless little old lady? Especially in a town full of people you barely know when you don't know who might have it in for you. I'm sorry, but the only reason this got 2 stars was because of Jax.

Not as good as the first

I didn't like Dane in this book. He didn't seem like the same character as he was in book one. He acted like a jerk to Jax and was completely self centered and dismissive. I did like Jax and really didn't feel like he and Dane were a match. The plot was kind of weak as well. There wasn't any real tension or suspense. I will read future installments, as I liked the secondary characters.

3.5*. Good enough that I'll re-read this again, but though it had the elements for a great tale, it lacked a little depth.

This book can be read as a standalone, though the author warns that there are some spoilers for book 1 in it. I enjoyed it without reading the first, which is a MMM tale, and it's good enough to make me want to read the third.

This tale has a strong alpha male lead in Jax, a very likeable but slightly damaged older lead in Dane, father of baby Emma, and it has a storyline that brings Jax into their lives and gives him a reason to stay...however, the danger that there supposedly was in the tale never really panned out to anything, despite the rather shocking opening scene that prepped me for more of the same violence.

That opening scene wasn't really explained in sufficient detail, and the supposed cold-bloodedness of one of the faceless baddies did not fit in with the reveal in the ending, so I think that the author and her editor missed something here.

Overall, it has decent guys, doesn't make enough of the baby whose age we don't get to know and who doesn't do anything but cry a tiny bit before being pacified by a bottle and falling asleep. We don't even really see Dane having a life other than feeding his daughter, despite him being a vet/trying to set up his practice. Jax gets to flex his muscles and get his gun out, but overall, the tale lacked depth. It could easily have been a 5* read with a little...more of all of the above.

A great productivity skill to train

I always thought that speed reading would mean scan reading and just the main message but none of the details. The author actually shows how to read much faster and not loose in quality through some very useful exercises.

I love reading in my free time and I also have to read a lot for work in English, which is not my native language. Therefore I was really interested to try out this method. After just a week practice my rate has increased from 300 to almost 600 EWPM (efficient word per minute). Again that's for reading in a foreign language. It's just amazing.

The finger right pointing helped me a lot as well as to eliminate the voice in my head when I read.

I have already increased my rate by about 25%

I read a lot of books each year, but am always struggling with wanting to read faster AND increase comprehension. The two seem to be mutually exclusive at times. However, I found many of the tips and exercises provided in this handy guide to be very helpful. Of course, learning this skill is an individual process and no one method works for every person so you’ll have to judge for yourself which works best for you. For me, double-pointing and keywords seems to be key to my speed and comprehension. Used in combination, I have already increased my rate by about 25% so far based on the included assessment in the appendix.

Great Tools and Techniques

Great book to learn about speed reading and tools to help you do it. I love that it has assessments to help you determine where you are at for your reading speed and then gives tips on how to increase reading speed, I was shocked at how many of the questions in the assessment that I didnt know the answer to, I guess part of my issue is controlling distractions while I am reading.

Robert M. Insoft, MD, FAAP is the Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs and Quality at Women & Infants Hospital where he is also a practicing neonatologist. He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Brown University Alpert Medical School. He served 2 elected terms as Chair of the AAP’s Section on Transport Medicine and co-chaired and spoke/taught at multiple Academy, PREP and other regional, national/international conferences. He has authored numerous research articles and chapters, many on quality improvement and transport medicine.

Associate editor:
Hamilton P. Schwartz, MD, MEd, FAAP, FACEP is a board-certified physician in Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and Emergency Medical Services. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s where he has worked for 16 years. Dr. Schwartz has been serving on the Ohio Medical Transportation Board as a governor-appointed member since 2009. He served two terms as an elected executive committee member of The American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Transport Medicine from 2010-2014.

He has been the Pediatric Medical Director of the Cincinnati Fire Department since 2005 and the Medical Director of the Cincinnati Children’s Critical Care Transport Team since 2007. First off, I have to admit I read this book before reading Frankie & Al. I felt I was missing a little backstory so I instantly read Frankie & Al’s story and then Ed & Marchant made more sense. So I suggest you read the series in order unlike myself. I honestly hated Ed and didn’t think I could ever change my mind about him. Marchant is a saint and a great Dom, he knew just want to do to make things work with Ed and how to bring Ed out of his shell. The book wasn’t long but it was a good story and I can’t wait to hear more about this characters in other books.

Before I start my review I have to confess to not having read Frankie & Al, the first book in this series. It is quite possible I would have had a tougher time getting to appreciate Ed if I had the earlier book first. As it is, Ed is a very unsympathetic character when we first meet him in this book. And I wouldn’t say he’s suddenly transformed into a ray of sunlight when he meets Marchant. But he does gradually mellow and, as we find out about his past, it becomes ever easier to sympathise with him. In fact, by the time I was half way through the book I’d started looking at him not as a horrible man but rather has a scared and scarred little boy, doing what he had to in order to keep his head above water.

Marchant was a wonderful character from the moment he was introduced. Smart, sensitive and kind he also has a huge bull-s*** radar and figures Ed out in no time at all. The way he manages to slowly draw Ed out of his shell and teach him how to look at his past and the world around him in a new light was breathtaking.

Much as I loved Marchant, Ed was the man I fell for in this novella. His journey was frightening (for him) and difficult. Yet, as soon as he’s given permission to be himself he starts showing his good and human side. His transformation kept me mesmerised from start to finish and I was sad when the end of the book forced me to say goodbye to him.

For a book with relatively little explicit sex in it, this book was incredibly hot. The slow seduction of Ed and his courage when he gives and receives what he’s always considered wrong, perverted and deviant was more enticing than any detailed sex scene could ever be.

My admiration for Sue Brown’s storytelling talent grows with every book by her I read. I’m lucky because there’s still a long list of titles I haven’t read yet. Catching up is going to be fun.

I think Ed and Marchant could almost be my favourite Sue Brown characters of late. Ed is so unlikeable in the initial pages and I wondered how he could be in a romance, but everyone has their reasons for their behaviour and poor Ed has such sad reasons I just wanted to hug him. Happily he bumps into Marchant who, after dumping Cola over him at a supermarket, becomes an adorable saviour. He sees Ed for who he really is. He gently breaks down his barriers and builds him up stronger and happy for the first time in his life.

Their story is wonderful and the characters are not stereotypical muscle bound hunks. This is a story relating to BDSM, but it is the gentlest and one of the most intelligent BDSM stories you will ever read. This is not the Dom who takes the broken virgin and whips him into submission, literally. The cover for this story is gorgeous and suits the story perfectly. This is a genuine romance. So many stories are tagged ‘m/m romance’ and romantic they are not. The dancing aspect had me nearly weeping especially when Ed remembers his ‘paso doble’…

The passage below reminded me why I like Sue Brown’s writing so much…

Ed had to gird his loins to step over the threshold of the club. “Girding one’s loins” was a phrase that had always made Ed blush, but in this instance, it was very appropriate. Ed’s loins were primed and willing, even if his brain was not so cooperative.

So if I enjoyed this story so much why not a 5*? Well because I would have enjoyed it that bit more had it been novel length. Now there are many reasons why a story is a novella instead of a novel, and not all of them are in the author’s power to change. The reason I felt it should have been a novel was that a lot of the progression through Ed and Marchant’s relationship is skipped through. End of one chapter they were at the beginning stages of their relationship, next page new chapter… six months on. Plus, I wanted to know about Ed making friends with Maisie and how Marchant helped Ed overcome his underlying issues…Ed’s job and more about Marchant’s club.

Now it maybe, as this is in a series of novellas, I will find the answers in the following books…but I like immediate gratification and would have preferred a lovely long novel. Of course the fact that I am dying to know all these details about the character’s future is also indicative of how much I loved this novella.

Written for the lay person...

who wants to know more about dealing with death. As the two authors, Barbara Okun and Joseph Nowinski, write in their excellent guide, "Saying Goodbye", death these days is often a slower process as people are living longer and living with terminal disease. A lingering death of a loved-one gives the family and friends and the patient a chance to prepare for the inevitable. And preparing can be everything from emotional to physical to financial matters. Throughout the book, Okun and Nowinski use the voices of people going through the process which gives the reader a more casual feel than perhaps a text book on the subject might do. This book is written for the lay person and simple, easily digestible terms are used to make the subject of a loved one's approaching death a little easier to deal with.

Okun and Nowlinski redefine the Five Stages of Grief, as originally conceived by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her 1970 book, "On Death and Dying". They bring it up-to-date, dealing with the new realities of terminal illness and death.

This guide, published by Harvard Health Publications, does not just list references about where you can seek help, but also goes through the steps needed to help both the family/caregivers and the terminal patient. Writing about the emotional toll in the situation, the authors give useful suggestions about forming support groups to help. They also write about the ruptures within a family that terminal illness of one member often bring out in the open that have long been hidden. Okun and Nowinski are excellent writers and the subject of terminal illness and death are delicately, yet forthrightly handled.

VERY Helpful

As I prepared to participate in the care-taking of my mother's last few months of her life, which was cut short to 24 days, I took comfort in learning how to deal with the emotional roller coaster that my mother and my siblings would go through. The most important thing I learned is that people that are dying can still hear you. Through the pain, through the closed eyes - they can hear you. I know this because I spoke to my mother and when she still could hear me and respond. She would respond with a grunt or a shake of her head and I knew she could hear me. Taking to her about memories of our childhood made her happy and telling stories where she didn't have the stress of answering or participating in the conversation, was perfect - for her and for my siblings and I. It was SO important to learn that in time to implement it. And then she slipped away...

Saying goodbye is for anyone

For myself, this book brought up important questions and provided insight for helpful and healing ways of processing the ubiquitous fact of death and dying specifically today, with advances in medicine. I came across a blog post by Dr.Nowinski and it piqued my interest enough to seek out this and another even more recent book he authored. I read it because the moden day dying process (a longer one then ever before, in many cases) is all too hushed, fragmented and certain real apects seem taboo -- the subject matter is less an immediate concern right now for me then it might be for others - nonetheless it is an absolute keeper and source book for living in today's world.
