Really Enjoyed this book

Really Enjoyed this book.
Very well written and at times laugh out loud funny which is a surprise given the subject matter.
Joe Sulllivan proves to be an interesting narrator and while nobody in their right mind would envy his situation he seems, on paper at least to be a reliable source of information. This book will appeal to fans of both prison memoirs and true crime with a host of infamous names appearing in the pages.

I bought this book and the first book- Tiers & Tears at the same time. That was a mistake. The grammar and spelling are so bad that I haven't been able to finish Tiers & Tears and forced myself to read Cellmates, Pals, Punks & Double Bunks largely because I was so irritated at myself for spending $40 on two books that obviously never went through the editing process. The stories could have been so much better if someone had taken the time (and effort!!) to read the book(s) before they went to print. I've never spent so much money on two books that weren't college text books so this was not only painful to read, but a pain in my wallet.

At its peak, the wealthy Carthaginian empire dominated the Mediterranean against the likes of Greece and Rome, with commercial enterprises and influence stretching from Spain to Turkey, and at several points in history it had a very real chance of replacing the fledgling Roman empire or the failing Greek poleis (city-states) altogether as master of the Mediterranean. Although Carthage by far preferred to exert economic pressure and influence before resorting to direct military power (and even went so far as to rely primarily on mercenary armies paid with its vast wealth for much of its history, it nonetheless produced a number of outstanding generals, from the likes of Hanno Magnus to, of course, the great bogeyman of Roman nightmares himself: Hannibal. Through clever use of force projection, both by maintaining a large and very active navy to dominate the seaborne routes along which most of their vast trading empire’s lifeblood flowed and by paying allies with gold or recruiting mercenary armies to fight for them, Carthage was able to go from a minor Phoenician settlement to one of the most powerful trading empires of antiquity.

However, the Carthaginians’ foreign policy had one fatal flaw; they had a knack over the centuries of picking the worst enemies they could possibly enter into conflict with. The first serious clash of civilizations which Carthage was involved with was Greece. Unfortunately for the Carthaginians, it would not endure the next major confrontation. Certain foreign policy decisions led to continuing enmity between Carthage and the burgeoning power of Rome, and what followed was a series of wars which turned from a battle for Mediterranean hegemony into an all-out struggle for survival, with Hannibal crossing the Alps and threatening Rome itself during the Second Punic War and Roman legions smashing Carthage to rubble at the end of the Third Punic War. As legend has it, the Romans literally salted the ground upon which Carthage stood to ensure its destruction once and for all.

Despite having a major influence on the Mediterranean for nearly five centuries, little evidence of Carthage’s past might survives. The city itself was reduced virtually to nothing by the Romans, who sought to erase all physical evidence of its existence, and though its ruins have been excavated they have not provided anywhere near the wealth of archaeological items or evidence as ancient locations like Rome, Athens, Syracuse, or even Troy. Today, Carthage is a largely unremarkable suburb of the city of Tunis, and though there are some impressive ancient monuments there for tourists to explore, the large majority of these are the result of later Roman settlement.

great coverage

I enjoyed reading this book as it gave me a great blend of the basic history and enough details to follow the history of Carthage and its struggle with Rome to understand better this area of history.

I enjoyed this book about the history of Carthage (hard to believe so many people survived that trying time!) I had learned from other Charles River Editor books to page back from where the book has you begin as there was oodles of other info I would have missed otherwise. Have to say I was a bit lost at first with all the history of the kings who ruled over all those centuries, but the story of "the great bogeyman of Roman nightmares himself: Hannibal" was well worth it! I was fascinated by his one campaign that read "Hannibal's army slaughtered an average of 600 Roman soldiers every minute until nightfall ended the battle". Wishing there were more photos (some statues were present) but I understand Rome took it to them after nearly being obliterated themselves. Very good history lesson and book about a civilization that rivaled Rome and Greece at that period of time!

Learn the History of Carthage in Just a Few Pages:

Surprisingly, this eBook is not up to Charles River Editors' standards. The maps provided to show the growth of Carthage or conflict locations - were too small to be very useful. The labeling words were miniscule -- and smaller. There were times I wished there were drawings showing the path of battles. Sometimes, it is hard to understand the significance of actions without more visual aids.

However, this is a good general overview of the history of Carthage. The folks of the ancient times seemed to wage war with amazing frequency. It has been a long time since I read about ancient world history and this text did a great job of explaining why various conflicts occurred.

Charles River books excel at explaining the `why' of things; thus making history more interesting. 4 stars.

The Mi'kmaq culture hero Kluskap serves as a key persona in discussing issues such as traditions, changing conceptions of land, and human-environmental relations. In order not to depict Mi'kmaq culture as timeless, two important periods in its history are examined. Within the first period, between 1850 and 1930, Hornborg explores historical evidence of the ontology, epistemology, and ethics - jointly labelled animism - that stem from a premodern Mi'kmaq hunting subsistence. New ways of discussing animism and shamanism are here richly exemplified. The second study situates the culture hero in the modern world of the 1990s, when allusions to Mi'kmaq tradition and to Kluskap played an important role in the struggle against a planned superquarry on Cape Breton. This study discusses the eco-cosmology that has been formulated by modern reserve inhabitants which could be labelled a 'sacred ecology'. Focusing on how the Mi'kmaq are rebuilding their traditions and environmental relations in interaction with modern society, Hornborg illustrates how environmental groups, pan-Indianism, and education play an important role, but so does reserve life. By anchoring their engagement in reserve life the Mi'kmaq traditionalists have, to a large extent, been able to confront both external and internal doubts about their authenticity.

About the Author
Anne-Christine Hornborg is Professor in History of Religions in the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies at Lund University, Sweden. She has also previously lectured at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies, Human Ecology Division and the Department of Social Anthropology, Lund University. She has undertaken fieldwork, conducted 1992-1993, 1996 and 2000 on the reservations of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and Canada, during 1998 and 2001 in Tonga, and during 2004 in Peru. Anne-Christine Hornborg has written several international, published articles concerning indigenous worldviews, rituals and embodiment, the phenomenology of landscape, the anthropologist in field, and ecology and religion. Currently she is developing the new interdisciplinary field "Ritual Studies". In this field of research, she will examine rituals as lived experience, new rituals in late modernity, ritual and practice theory, and the importance of cross-disciplinary studies in developing theories of ritual and of ritual practices.

About the Author
Kathy Norris says her passion for fiber arts began more than 30 years ago when she first started knitting with needles. In recent years, she taught herself to use a knitting wheel (loom) while teaching at an arts and craft store. Her first loom knit designs were created to use in her classes to teach others how to use the loom. Now her designs can be found in various publications. In addition to knitting, she is a bead and crochet artist.

has some interesting texture work but no loom knitting instruction (so not for absolute beginners)

I had a gift card and an Amazon promo code so I figured I would take a chance on this book despite the lack of images or reviews.

First off, this is more of a booklet or pamphlet than an actual book -- the type of thing you often see at craft stores, though, and at a similar price point. It's printed on high-quality, glossy paper and it's in full color. Instructions are written in a traditional manner (in text with directions like "K2, P1," describing what to do in each row) but there are also charts/graphs, if you prefer that. For what it's worth, instructions for needle knitting and Knook are also included. The loom knitting instructions are clear; I can't speak for the needle knitting or Knook instructions because I don't know how to do either of those things.

The main point of this book is to teach new single-color stitch patterns. A scale of 1-4, difficulty-wise, is mentioned at the end, but all of these projects have level "2." As the title suggests, all the projects are dish cloths (so, simple squares and rectangles). However, I do think a lot of the stitch patterns are pretty cool, and the author mentions that these can be adapted to be hats and scarves, as well. I think that's true, and I don't think it would be too difficult to do so, assuming at least a basic level of experience with loom knitting.

I would argue that this book is not for absolute beginners. While the projects are relatively simple and will work up quickly, there is pretty much no instruction on loom knitting in this book. It is assumed you know how to knit and purl already, know how to cast on and bind off, etc. If you don't know these things, you should start off with an introductory loom knitting book before moving on to his one.

All of the patterns in the book require a loom with 62 pegs. The book says "straight loom," but a circular one should be fine as well. Since these are flat projects, of course you can use a loom with more pegs just as easily. The yarn for each project is 4 (worsted weight). Nothing is said about the gauge of the loom but I infer that something like a Knifty Knitter or the Martha Stewart loom using the large pegs spaced every other hole would be best. Worsted weight yarn is a little bit thin for both of those, but it is mentioned that your projects will shrink in the wash (Ms. Norris recommends 100% cotton yarn) and it is also mentioned that you can double up and knit with two strands instead of one. With that in mind, a larger gauge loom like the ones I've mentioned earlier in this paragraph should be exactly what you need. (The nice thing is that, with dishcloths, gauge is not critical -- your piece can be larger or smaller than the model and it'll still work.) Alternatively, you could use a smaller gauge loom (like the Martha Stewart one with the small pegs in every hole) and one strand of yarn, especially if you're doing something like a scarf with one of these patterns.

I have to admit, I would hate to use something I spent a long time making as a dishcloth (what if it gets stained after all that work?). So I plan to skip right ahead to making scarves out of these patterns. I think a lot of the patterns are visually interesting. Further, I like very much the fact that the only stitches used are knit and purl -- no fancy new techniques to learn, just the basics (which are more versatile than I thought).

Another wonderful book from Kathy Norris.

Loom Knit Dishcloths by Kathy Norris is a beautifully written and designed book. It includes 13 unique patterns with instructions fully written, step-by-step directions for loom knitters, and as a bonus, for needle knitting and knook as well. The patterns are clearly presented in an easily readable format. A complete shopping list is included, for each of the three crafts. In addition, there is a full color chart for each of the patterns. Unlike most pattern charts, these are large enough to see, and color coded. If you've never worked with a chart, this book is a perfect way to try them out, since you have both the written pattern and the large chart to work from.
The stitch patterns themselves are a great addition to any loom knitter's library, and include a delicate chevron, dot stitch, double broken rib, elongated rib check, garter basket weave, Swedish block, and pique, among others. In addition, there is a well written guide at the back of the book with abbreviations, symbols, guide to yarn weights, gauge, and charts. On the back of the book, Leisure Arts says they have also created bonus videos to go with the book.
I highly recommend this great book by Kathy Norris.

Well Written, Well Illustrated

I bought this looking for new loom knitting ideas and patterns. This is perfect. Nothing in the book is terribly complicated, and all the stitches within can be adapted for scarves, hats, shawls or even clothes. The instructions are clear, the pictures are helpful. This is great for making quick projects without buying a load of yarn to do so.

About the Author
Rakesh V. Vohra is the John L. and Helen Kellogg Professor of Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, where he is also Director of the Center for Mathematical Studies in Economics and Management Science. He previously taught at the Fisher School of Business, Ohio State University, MIT's Sloan School of Management, the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and is the author of Advanced Mathematical Economics (2005) and Mechanism Design: A Linear Programming Approach (Econometric Society Monographs, Cambridge University Press, 2011). Professor Vohra received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Maryland.

Great review just before flying to Microecon at graduate level

I have purchased this book because I suspected that Mas-colell can readily discourage me.But this not came true.All I need is in this book.Basic contents are feasibility,optimization,fixed point theorems,all are often used in Microecon class.The book provides all bases,theorems and also exercises.At the end of each chapter you can find the applications to economics.For example Vohra shows how it possible to use linear programming to feel if the game has core allocation.It is highly recommended for economics student prior to entering the gradute level micro-econ courses.Missing star due to the book lacked any hints the exercises.

About the Author
Alejandro Jodorowsky (also known as Alexandro Jodorowsky) is a Chilean film and theatre director, screenwriter, playwright, actor, comic book writer, author, poet, mime, musician, and spiritual guru. He is best known for his avant-garde, cult films, such as "El Topo," a midnight movie favorite.

Jean Giraud aka Mœbius was a French artist, cartoonist, and writer, who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessin�es tradition. Giraud earned worldwide fame, predominantly under the pseudonym Mœbius, which he used to create a wide range of science fiction and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative and surreal, almost abstract style. Esteemed by Federico Fellini, Stan Lee and Hayao Miyazaki, among many others, he is considered as the most influential bande dessin�e artist, and a continued influence to filmmakers and artists around the world.

Fantastic.

I got this after seeing the documentary on the Dune Jodorowski would have made and I was very interested in the story he wanted to bring to the screen and after seeing this, I know my interest was not misplaced. The book suffers from a small amount of Deus Ex Machina and happy coincidence, a little forced drama and urgency, but overwhelmingly it is unique, beautifully drawn, well-executed and a great read. Those are minor gripes in the realm of graphic novels, really. The first 50 pages didn't draw me in well but once Jodorowski hit his stride as a storyteller in this medium the book takes off and becomes phenomenal. It's got a blend of almost everything as far as genres go, has interesting viewpoints and a great overall story arc. It has compelled me to get the next book in the series, eventually. If money wasn't tight I would have gotten the second one already.

I spent an hour sniffing the pages and looking at the artwork when I first got this, the publishing is VERY quality for the price. Built in bookmark just adds extra value and makes keeping track of your place so simple. If you're a fan of Jodorowski, Moebius or good graphic novels, sci-fi adventures or intellectual, philosophical discourse hidden in a good story, you should get this. You can miss out if you want, but it's totally worth the price to hold this and read it.

If you're a fan of Moebius as I am, you should buy this for the artwork alone. Note that this edition AFAIK uses the original coloring and is not censored, unlike previous releases which did the material a great disservice. The print quality seems to be very good, and some of the later pages are "full-bleed" i.e. the artwork goes all the way to the edge of the pages.

The writing seems more likely to be hit or miss. People looking for a linear story that's easy to follow and explains everything will probably be disappointed. The universe (Jodoverse?) is expansive, wildly imaginative, and unrelentingly bizarre. Quite often the logic behind what's going on is unclear and/or unexplained.

it's also amazing. I don't really have a good word for why it's so good ("dreamlike" and "surreal" come to mind), but if you're willing to sit down with it and just *experience* it I think you will probably have a very good time. Do not rush through it; take the time to digest each page before moving on.

Great book, read it like drinking a great wine...

How to describe a book that almost everyone liked? I bought this book considering the lineage of the author and the drawings from a legend like Moebius.
Their work has influenced Sci Fi for years and you will notice that when you open the pages and see the first frame, from Alien to Fifth Element, there are similarities everywhere, in terms of aesthetic not plot.
With Incal you just do not read all the book at once, just want to read and detail every bit of the images as they are really a work of art.
If you are already familiar with Moebius and Jodorowky then you know what to expect.

He received his Th.M. in New Testament and systematic theology (summa cum laude) and his Ph.D. in theological studies from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas, where he was choosen for the W. H. Griffith Thomas Award for Academic Excellence and the Loraine S. Chafer Award in Systematic Theology. In addition to having authored various reviews and articles, he recently translated and published The Arminian Confession of 1621 (2005).

An Excellent Arminian Resource

This monograph from Princeton University of the Arminian Confession of 1621 is an excellent resource for all disciples of Christ but especially those who identify their theology with Jacob Arminius. Arminius died before the infamous Synod of Dort in which Arminianism was condemned by the Calvinist led court. I believe that had Arminius lived, while he might not have changed history, he was an excellent debater and would have responded to his Calvinist attackers with the Word of God.

This Confession of 1621 proves that. While Arminius did not write it, his theology and life are seen all through it. Arminius was focused on the glory of God. He began his theology not on the basis of free will (contrary to popular opinions from Calvinists) but with the doctrine of God. From his view of God (mainly that He is loving and good), Arminius focused on how God was redeeming fallen humanity by His grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). From his view of God, Arminius developed a biblical theology that focused on the love of God and His desire to save the lost above the Calvinistic notion of divine sovereignty.

This monograph will show that the early Arminians (as later some fell into liberalism as did some Calvinists) were biblically focused. Anyone who attempts to argue against Arminianism by asserting that Arminians elevated free will have not read Arminius nor the Remonstrance that followed. Arminians have historically loved the Word of God and sought to teach the truths therein.

This is the only available English version of this valuable ...

This is the only available English version of this valuable historical document so far as I know.
I value the early Arminian statements as profitable objections to my Calvinism.
Although I have not found any of the them to be as clear, logical, and Scriptural as their Calvinistic responses.
This particular Confession is especially interesting since the Arminians, who were opposed to Confessions, decided to write a confession(?).

The only reason I do not rate the book at 5-stars is that the translation is unclear at times...I suspect that perhaps Prof. Ellis was thinking Portuguese while writing English?

A Complete English Translation

The famous Confession of the Remonstrant Pastors was written shortly after the Synod of Dort to make a clear statement of the Remonstrant faith and correct misrepresentations of the Remonstrants' faith published in the Acts of the Synod of Dort (published in Latin as Acta Synodi Nationalis). It truly is a sad state of affairs that an English translation of the Confession doesn't exist in the public domain and especially so considering how much material is available for other historical Christian studies. Nevertheless, Pickwick Publications has published the full Latin text of the Confession with a contemporary parallel English translation completed by Mark A. Ellis.

In addition to the parallel English translation Dr. Ellis supplies, the translator's introduction includes the benefit of Dr. Ellis' doctoral work. There Ellis paints a brief survey of the political, cultural, and theological context that led the Remonstrants (primarily Episcopius) to write the Confession. Excerpts:

"Those from an Arminian tradition may want to compare their theology with that of the early Remonstrants.... One must keep in mind, however, that the Confession does not reflect Arminius' theology alone. It also represents those who were `Arminian' before Arminius (such as Whenbogaert and older pastors), together with Episcopius' own creative impulses" (Ellis, Introduction, p. v).

"Theological and political turmoil brought the Netherlands to the brink of civil war in the years leading up [to] the synod and troubled both Episcopius and his family. Persecution to the point that on August 30, 1618, Johannes Wtenbogaert, the political leader of the Remonstrants, heeded the advice of his colleagues and fled the country. In his absence the leadership of the Remonstrants fell to Episcopius. On September 20, Episcopius received a letter from the States of Holland and West-Friesland inviting him to represent the University at the national synod. The synod began on November 17 and one of the first acts was to change Episopius' status from a representative to a subpoenaed person. The Remonstrants knew this ended thier hope for open debate and turned to other means in order to gain a hearing. Episcopius asked for permission to address the Synod and then launched into an hour and a half oration detailing the Remonstrant position and their oppression at the heands of the Calvinist Reformed. The speech was powerful and soon circulated throughout the Netherlands and beyond. The Remonstrant protest, however, was short-lived. The president of the synod expelled them for refusing to cooperate, and the synod decided to judge against them from their writings. It condemned their beliefs on April 24, 1619, civil sentences were pronounced on May 6 and on July 5 the leaders of the Remonstrants were driven into exile.

"The exiled Remonstrants eventually settled in Antrerp, where they formed the Remonstrant Brotherhood and selected Episcopius, Wtenbogaert and Nicholas Grevinchoven to form the "foreign directorship." It was during these meetings that the Remonstrants discussed their need for a confession. Many were hesitant, fearful of establishing the same type of creedalism which had resulted in their persecution and banishment. The Preface to the Confession, which the Remonstrants considered an integral part of the document, emphasized its non-binding character" (Ellis, Introduction, pp. viii-ix).
