A complete reference on cartooning the head and figure.

This book is a clearly written, easy to follow, detailed and concise handbook on cartooning the head and figure by using several different styles and variations, and emphasizing humor and exaggeration. This fully illustrated reference contains over 3,000 step-by-step diagrams and illustrations and is structured into sixteen carefully organized sections that cover the basic and not so basic principles of cartooning.
It includes general topics like caricatures, cartooning styles and techniques, the head and face, the standing, walking and running figure, different positions for the figure, and emotions and facial expressions (the alphabetized catalog of 150 emotions and expressions alone is worth the price of this book). He also goes into specific topics like hands, feet and clothing, pretty girls, babies and children, and sports cartoons. As an added bonus he includes additional topics such as Advertising Applications for Cartoons and Special Problems which cover specific characters like hobos, tramps and the military, and conversations, special attires and crowds, among others.
By studying this book as if it were a textbook on a course, doing all the exercises and reviewing each section afterwards, my cartoons have come to life in a very, very short time.

Excellent!

I own most of Mr. Hamm's books now and all of them are excellent.

Some caution though for comic book artists wannabes, this book

doesn't teach you action oriented cartoons. Get "Action!

Cartooning" by Ben Caldwell instead.

However, Mr. Hamm's book is a classic because it's not just a

how-to book but rather a book founded on good art principles

considering Mr. Hamm isn't just a "cartoonist" but a true

artist.

Get this book! You won't be disappointed.

The greatest intoduction to CARTOONING ever written

"Cartooning the Head & Figure" --by Jack Hamm

Artist and Christian minister Jack Hamm passed from this world at the age of 81. He illustrated the notable cartoon strip characters "BUGS BUNNY" and "ALLEY OOP" early in his career as an artist. He wrote and illustrated over 25 books on drawing. He pioneered an early TV show on drawing instruction in the Dallas/Houston Texas area.

I admit I am not an expert on fine art, but after reviewing many books which teach beginners HOW-TO-DRAW, it is my sincere opinion that Jack Hamm is the finest instructor America ever produced. Hamm almost never composed text, or used wordy explanations about drawing something. Hamm drew you a picture or series of pictures and showed how it might be done. He did not do this ..."sometimes" in his books. Hamm did this ALL THE TIME, whether it was cartoon figures, seascapes, landscapes, or drawing the human figure.

That is why any effort to list all the contents of his book, "CARTOONING THE HEAD & FIGURE" staggers the human imagination. I might be sitting at the computer for several hours, just listing the contents. Hamm shows how to draw every possible human emotion. Pages 22 & 23 alone are specific instructions in how to draw particular parts of the face to yield a human feeling.

The amazing thing is, Hamm is offering a book not only that adults can use; rather, Hamm is offering a book that CHILDREN can use. This book is in a class by itself, just as is Hamm's classic on drawing the human figure. Hamm's books are one of the richest treasures ever produced on American soil.

Quite possibly the best investment you will ever make

Let me say straightaway that I know Andy Cope (one of this book's two authors) on a personal basis. We're not drinking buddies or anything, but we come from the same small town and we're fond of each other. I don't think he's famous enough yet for this to class as name dropping (though I expect that day will arrive), so why mention it?

I mention it because, knowing him personally, I can tell you that Andy is a truly inspirational guy. He wasn't born special and he wasn't born happy, and for a long time he lived the same kind of life that most people live, making the same kinds of mistakes that most people make, and feeling sorry for himself when things weren't going his way. Then, as a student of Psychology, he noticed something - there was a vast amount of published research into the causes of human unhappiness, but hardly any about what makes people happy! At this point, he decided to do something about it, changing his life for the better along the way.

And now you can make your life better too, by following the ideas in this down-to-earth and effective little book. You'll get carefully selected nuggets of wisdom, easy to follow examples, and straightforward exercises to get you thinking about your world and how you see it. But most of all you'll get six simple principles which you can use to help yourself become a happier person. I just can't recommend it highly enough.

Simple and inspiring

I first heard about co-author Andy Cope from a facilitator on a fabulous training course. I had asked the facilitator if he could recommend anybody for my company who provide dance teachers nationwide to teach dance to children. I wanted something positive, motivating and inspirational so the teachers could pass on their new found energy, enthusiasm and inspiration to the children. I borrowed this book, read it within a couple of days and found it difficult to put down. The witty sense of humour and bitesized chunks made it easy to revisit even if my reading had been interrupted. Nuggets of inspiration from quotes and anecdotes make this book wonderfully accessible without the academic jargon of positive psychology. I have now purchased this book and provided staff with a copy each. Upon revisiting it, have realised how much I had forgotten and have made a note to myself to read this on six-monthly basis to notice those mood hooverers and apply The 90/10 Principle of choosing to respond positively to those negative things that happen to us all and are out of our control. I throughly recommend this book to anyone who is wanting a simple approach to making every day life a more positive thing!

Loved It

I am a serial entrepreneur, a University lecturer in both Russia and the USA and an international business and peak performance consultant. As such I am used to reading a plethora of business, motivational, peak performance, coaching, team building psychology type of books. In fact I have enough books at home, on these subjects, to sink several ships. So my comments on this poor book are based upon real and theoretical personal development experience.

This book is an easy read and gets straight to the point. Whilst the content is an amalgamation of a lot of other books I have read, I have not read a book that delivers so much, in such a concise way, in a long time. The aim of the book is in essence to get the reader to think positively about their lives and what happens to them. It tries to get readers to "reframe" what happens to them and to see things in a positive way. It uses anecdotes to illustrate the most important points which make the process of change easier to understand. It gives the reader insights into how other people/personalities can impact upon their own happiness and so affect your own brilliance. It offers sound solutions and good advice on how to fix negativity. This is a very good and thoughtful book, which should help anyone who reads it to think and act in a more positive driven way.

For me the definitive book on mind dynamics is by Maxwell Maltz, Psychocybernetics. This book looks at how the mind works and how to reprogramme it for success. Maltz wrote his book in the 1960's and it is still the definitive guide to changing how a person views their world. The Art of Being Brilliant uses ideas present in Maltz's work, but makes how to use the ideas, much more clear and accessible. So if you want to change your life and develop a more optimistic mind frame, try reading this book as I am sure it will help.

awesome new kung fu book!!!

I just got this book last month, and it's great! Every move is analyzed in incredible detail and it really helps you understand how to do the jumps better. I'm still working on my moves but I've already increased my rotations!! I've just about got my 540 and I'm on my way to 720! The tips in there are so on the money, and even though the book is a little wordy, it's soooo easy to read. Way more helpful than some other martial arts books I've looked at. Oh yeah, and there's a companion guide to the book you can download too.

good resource

You can find advice all over the internet on how to do certain moves, but nothing online has compared to the wealth of detail contained in this book. The author breaks the moves down into such minute detail, then explains the common mistakes people make, and drills that can be done to get the move.

I was a little put off at first by the stick figure drawings, but they're well done and I've come to realize that they demonstrate the moves and concepts far more easily than static pictures of people.

In addition, the author runs a website where he posts updates (things like wushu competition rules changing and how that affects the move) and responds to questions in the book's forum. I suppose you could skip buying the book and post a million questions to the forum, but don't be a jerk/cheapskate. Buy the book, you won't regret it. And if anything doesn't make sense or you feel it's missing something, go ask.

This books goes into great detail on technique, erros, and drills for NANDU (jumps) in WUSHU. As a national wushu team member (mexico) this book has helped me to learn and control my jumps, this book is a must for every wushu athlete and serious coach.

I love the "Get A Clue book series. More importantly, my eight year-old son loves the series. We've struggled to find books that he's interested in and we've definately found them with the Get A Clue books. We read them every night and he hates to put it down for bed. The illustrations and the text keep him thinking and interested. Friends had suggested other titles for him but nothing touches these. Write more!
