For those who practice Pagan faiths, poetry is essential. There are many books of ritual, but no standard liturgy. It therefore becomes our right and responsibility to craft our own rituals. We must choose words that connect us to the Divine, nurture our spirits and challenge us to become more aware. This is what poetry does.

Naturally, I'm bound to love it. There really are poems there that make the hair on the back of my neck stand up as well. Back when I was writing rituals for a working coven every month, this book would have been invaluable to me for inspiration.

Very enjoyable collection
By Amazon Reviewer
The Pagan's Muse is a very enjoyable collection of pagan-oriented writing, presented in a quality hardback format. The writing is approachable &, I believe, ultimately something that even your run-of-the-mill non-pagan poetry aficionado will be able to appreciate. I agree with another reviewer that, as a result of having multiple poems on the same page, things do feel a bit cramped; however, you quickly acclimate to the format & it is not an unusual one for a poetry compilation of this type.
I think my only real disappointment with this book is that there isn't more editoral commentary to tie things together a bit more...

The Globalization Paradox: Democracy and the Future of the World Economy, by Dani Rodrik

"Cogent, well-written . . . critiques unalloyed globalization enthusiasts, taking aim at their desire to fully liberalize foreign trade ad capital movements." ―Foreign Affairs

In this eloquent challenge to the reigning wisdom on globalization, Dani Rodrik reminds us of the importance of the nation-state, arguing forcefully that when the social arrangements of democracies inevitably clash with the international demands of globalization, national priorities should take precedence. Combining history with insight, humor with good-natured critique, Rodrik’s case for a customizable globalization supported by a light frame of international rules shows the way to a balanced prosperity as we confront today’s global challenges in trade, finance, and labor markets.

Review
“Required reading for those who seek to prevent the financial crises and unfair trade practices that feed the backlash against the open markets.” (Nouriel Roubini, coauthor of Crisis Economics: A Crash Course in the Future of Finance)

“Dani Rodrik may be globalization’s most prominent―and most thoughtful―gadfly. In The Globalization Paradox he wonders aloud whether extreme globalization undermines democracy―and vice versa. Read it and you’ll wonder too.” (Alan S. Blinder, former vice chairman of the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors)

“Takes on the biggest issue of our time―globalization―and eloquently enlarges the debate about the extent and limits of global cooperation.” (Gordon Brown, former British Prime Minister)

“In this cogent, well-written book, Rodrik, a Harvard economist, critiques unalloyed globalization enthusiasts, taking aim at their desire to fully liberalize foreign trade and capital movements.” (Richard N. Cooper - Foreign Affairs)

“Although [Rodrik’s] message is nuanced and rigorous, drawing on history, logic and the latest economic data, he manages to convey it in simple, powerful prose that any reader can follow. . . . A much-needed addendum to [Adam] Smith’s famous formulation.” (Steven Pearlstein - Washington Post)

“Simply the best recent treatment of the globalization dilemma that I’ve read, by an economist or anyone else. . . . He gives us nothing less than a general theory of globalization, development, democracy, and the state. The book provides the pleasure of following a thoughtful, critical mind working through a complex puzzle. Rodrik writes in highly friendly and nontechnical prose, blending a wide-ranging knowledge of economic history and politics and a gentle, occasionally incredulous, skepticism about the narrow and distorting lens of his fellow economists.” (Robert Kuttner - American Prospect)

“A Big Book, one that may shape a new way of thinking about the global economy. . . . The style is conversational, but sweeping and authoritative―professorial in the positive sense. Rodrik is less of a polemicist . . . preferring to stay inside the tent, but he can pack a polite punch when necessary.” (Duncan Green, Oxfam International, author of From Poverty to Power)

“Mr. Rodrik is exactly what the doctor ordered because economics over the past few years has become hyper-politicized (thank you, Paul Krugman) yet never more dismal. Well-written, witty, crafted by an author who doesn’t jump the "Freakonomics" shark, The Globalization Paradox reminds us that economists don’t exist without data, and data comes, ultimately, from the vision and labor of those in the marketplace.” (Robert Nersesian - New York Journal of Books)

Keep the Windows Open, But Don't Forget the Mosquito Screens
By Etienne RP
Every student in economics is familiar with Robert Mundell's triangle of impossibility. Based on the model that the Canadian economist developed with Marcus Flemming in 1962, this trilemma states that it is impossible to have a sovereign monetary policy, free capital flows, and a fixed exchange rate at the same time--that two, and only two, of these objectives could be met. This impossible trinity came to dominate policy debates in Europe in the run-up to the European monetary union in the 1990s--a rare example when the result of a theoretical model had a direct bearing on policy choices.

Although he doesn't develop a formal model, Dani Rodrik offers his own, more ambitious version of the impossibility triangle. The political trilemma of the world economy, as he names it, is that we cannot have deep economic integration ("hyperglobalization"), national sovereignty, and democratic politics at the same time. We have to sacrifice one of the corners of the triangle. And for Rodrik, the objective that has to be abandoned is clear and straightforward. We cannot compromise on democracy, and global governance is nothing but a distant dream. We therefore have to jettison hyperglobalization in favor of a more shallow form of global economic integration, a new version of the compromise that was embodied in the postwar system laid out at Bretton Woods. In particular, unrestricted capital mobility and indiscriminate trade openness will have to go. This will make the world a safer and better place for democracy.

Dani Rodrik, who teaches at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, is a first-class economist. In academic and policy circles, people talk about him with respect and sometimes even with awe--it is better to have him on the same side of an argument than sitting across the table. Some economists perfidly point out that he has a talent for bending numbers to support his claims-- that he is an expert in the art of political econometrics, or the use of statistical regressions to support one's political positions. But this is how the game of economics ought to be played. Although Rodrik is sometimes considered as a maverick and a lone wolf, he speaks from inside the tent. No one would put into question his qualification as an economist. Sure enough, his arguments are often controversial and even provocative, but they are receivable and debatable by the academic community. "He is one of us", most if not all economists would acknowledge.

This is why his criticism of globalization ought be read with great attention and interest. It comes at a time when the high hopes invested in globalization have receded, and the negative aspects brought about by open borders and financial liberalization now take center stage. At this juncture, as Rodrik underscores, we need a new narrative to shape the next stage of globalization. "Economists have been responsible for the narratives that interpret development success and failure, narratives which in turn have guided policy in many parts of the world." They now have a special responsibility for shaping the debate: because they have been the cheerleaders of the previous phase of global openness, and because they can help distinguish snake oil from real ointments, and separate "the legitimate wheat from the 'protectionist' chaff".

Many prominent economists are now starting to have second thoughts on globalization. True, their choir was never at unison: some had different pitches, and their endorsement of free and open markets often came with caveats and restrictions. Even a staunch free-trader like Jagdish Baghwati expressed warnings about unrestricted capital mobility. Now more voices are beginning to worry about the consequences of deindustrialization, the growth of inequality, and the race to bottom standards and regulations brought about the current wave of globalization in developed economies. As Keynes once famously remarked, "When the facts change, I change my mind--what do you do, sir?" Rodrik, for one, never changed his mind on trade liberalization. He was one of the first economists to bring the debate from the seminar room to the political arena, and to argue against the simplistic case for free trade that is often doled out to journalists to supports claims about the benefits of globalization. He comments the matter with considerable talent and great humor--never was a class discussion on comparative advantage and international trade theory so lively and refreshing.

Dani Rodrik doesn't limit his argument to modern textbook economics. He excavates from the dusty shelves of economics libraries some forgotten books and tracts that are singularly relevant for today. Henry Martyn's Consideration Upon the East-India Trade, written in 1701, anticipates many of the arguments that economists who favored free trade would marshal much later. In 1961, James E. Mead wrote The Economics and Social Structure of Mauritius, and proposed the same kind of diagnostic tools and policy approach that Rodrik and his coauthors would later develop and sell out to the World Bank. This approach, called the "Growth Diagnostics framework", now serves as reference in international policy debates and is quoted approvingly by senior officials from emerging countries who are now the darlings of international gatherings. Development economics has come full circle: as Rodrik notes, "that industrial policy, in whatever guise, is once again considered acceptable, and indeed necessary, speaks volumes about how far we have retreated from the trade fundamentalism of the 1990s."

Rodrik also have his weak points. He is candid about his limitations as a forecaster. He didn't see the Asian crisis coming in 1997, and he got it wrong again in 2007 when he missed the subprime crisis that was brewing in the U.S. More to the point, he picked up the wrong fight in the late 1990s, arguing against free trade when the real menace was coming from the excesses of financial globalization. One gets the feeling he still gives too much importance to the trade agenda as defined by the WTO in comparison to the new trade rules and conditions negotiated away from public scrutiny in the bilateral or regional trade agreements that now span the world in a complex web of policy arrangements. Rodrik is on less familiar ground when the discusses international finance, and his plea for an international transaction tax could have been more substantiated.

In making the case for their pet theory, economists often miss the broader picture. Not so with Dani Rodrik. His list of principles and recommendations that close the book offer an all-encompassing agenda for a better and safer globalization. It is altogether fitting that the quote which best sums up his policy stance was offered by a Chinese student, who recommended to keep the windows open, but without forgetting the mosquito screens. This utterance could have been offered by a future statesman and, considering the wide audience that Dani Rodrik's essay deserves, it could as well be picked up by one.

"Hubris creates blind spots"
By DRDR
The Globalization Paradox adds rhetorical flair to Dani Rodrik's previous work condemning the intrusions of the WTO and IMF on the mechanisms of nation-states. Rodrik now dubs his enemy "hyperglobalization" (previously known as "deep integration") and insists that it be slayed to promote the diversity of social concerns across the world's democracies. The book augments the global economic governance chapters of "One Economics, Many Recipes" (a 2007 hodgepodge of the author's previous work) with richer historical context and topical material on the financial crisis and China's rise. I read several thoughtful reviews of Rodrik's last book in economics journals, and I am disappointed these reviews did not lead Rodrik to engage more of the recent economic literature in trade policy. Yet I still appreciate this book for asking important policy-relevant research questions that economists have often neglected.

A sizeable chunk of the book is navel-gazing: humbly defending the economics profession, while criticizing its members for unequivocally endorsing free trade in public. His most pointed barb is accusing economists of using more conditional views of free trade in the seminar room. I'm reminded of Elhanan Helpman and Paul Krugman's seminal 1989 trade policy monograph, which surveys several trade models in which government intervention is optimal. Yet the authors conclude, "The design of an advantageous trade policy requires information of a kind that is simply not available." This was not one of the seven "hand-waving arguments" Rodrik cites in support of free trade, but it's an important argument he should have engaged.

Rodrik downplays the concern from economists that much of trade policy in democracies is political rent-seeking. If there were a referendum for every trade policy decision, and citizens were perfectly informed about the impact of each one, would trade policy be much different from today? In other words, what share of trade policy originates from opportunistic lobbyists rather than legitimate democratic social preferences? I can imagine U.S. citizens protecting a few paper mill towns, but I don't see them keeping sugar quotas or subsidies for Brazilian cotton farmers.

What gains are left for further international liberalization? Rodrik argues wisely that because manufacturing liberalization has proceeded so far already, further liberalization will lead to much larger distributional effects than gains from trade. I was disappointed that Rodrik selectively cites Andrew Rose to suggest the GATT & WTO has had little effect on expanding trade, yet economists Arvind Subramaniam & Shang-Jin Wei have shown that only countries who actually liberalized themselves gained trade from the WTO -- as theory would predict. Rodrik is correct that overall gains from temporary migration (practically nonexistent at present) are much larger than gains from tariff liberalization. The same logic would suggest massive gains from liberalizing other forms of services trade (temporary migration of workers is but one form), and Rodrik does not mention this.

Even if one disagrees with Rodrik on normative trade policy, determining the ideal global institutions for balancing conflicting policy preferences across nation-states is still practically important. Rodrik makes a convincing case for the impossibility of global federalism (fantasy-crushing for Rodrik's Harvard Kennedy School students). He makes a good case that capital controls are necessary to allow for different national priorities in regulating finance. I'm less sold on Rodrik's claim that U.S. credit rating agencies are proof that labelling and corporate social responsibility cannot succeed: his example is a closed market in which government created rents by limiting entry to three firms. Regardless, I agree with Rodrik that nation-states are not going to completely surrender their sovereignty to a WTO-like organization, and there needs to be an institution that can allow them to negotiate over their distinct policy preferences.

Rodrik believes that the WTO overreached on national sovereignty, and he looks back longingly on the lighter integration of the GATT and Breton Woods regime from the late 1940s. What you won't learn from Rodrik is that Kyle Bagwell and Robert Staiger formalized such a theory, influential in the international law literature and published in top economic journals over the previous decade. Bagwell and Staiger suggest the ideal trade institution, similar to GATT, is one where nations negotiate over market access commitments, and countries should be free to choose any mixture of domestic policies and trade policies which maintains the negotiated level of market access. The mess of safeguard schemes that Rodrik instead proposes sound similar, yet it is hard to be sure without formalism. What is clear is that Rodrik believes domestic concerns are far more important than any international externalities created by trade and domestic policy choices, and he believes the market access focus of trade negotiations is problematic.

Rodrik used to have an active blog on international economics, but he came to a near full stop, believing that the blog and book-writing were substitutes. Still I hope the blog can be complementary to the further development of Dani's thinking on these important issues.

Democracy vs. profits...
By MADC
First, excuse me for my English.
I found this book to be very well researched and documented from a historical point of view. From a technical perspective, the explanations are clear and the logic and conclusions are solid. But we, people from the poor countries feel there is another side to the story. One that Mr. Rodrik mentions just in passing: there IS a dark side. Are there hedgehogs, or just economists responding to their ideology or to the money they get paid by the elites and/or transnational corporations running the globalization show? There is no way they didn't know what would be the results or consequences of the models they proposed and still defend. Well, the results are there for all to see and the scheme is to get the world back to what Mr. Rodrik presents as Capitalism No. 1, and that is deep globalization with the WTO and the FMI doing the job the gunboats did in the past.
I really think this is a book that everybody should read and study..

From the Inside Flap
Preface

This book is intended as an introduction to computer vision for a broad audience. It provides necessary theory and examples for students and practitioners who will work in fields where significant information must be extracted automatically from images. The book should be a useful resource for professionals, a text for both undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and a resource for enrichment of college or even high school projects. Our goals were to provide a basic set of fundamental concepts and algorithms and also discuss some of the exciting evolving application areas. This book is unique in that it contains chapters on image databases (Chapter 8) and on virtual and augmented reality (Chapter 15), two exciting evolving application areas. A final chapter (Chapter 16) gives a complete view of real-world systems that use computer vision.

Due to recent progress in the computer field, economical and flexible use of computer images is now pervasive. Computing. with images is no longer just for the realm of the sciences, but also for the arts and social sciences and even for hobbyists. The book should serve an established and growing audience including those interested in multimedia; art and design; geographic information systems; and image databases, in addition to the traditional areas of automation, image science, medical imaging, remote sensing, and computer cartography.

A broad purpose at first seems impossible to achieve. However, there are other kinds of texts that already do this in other areas—calculus, physics, and general computing. We hope we have made at least a good beginning—we wanted a book that would be useful in the classroom and also to the independent reader. We find the chosen topics interesting and sometimes exciting, and hope that they are accessible to a large audience. It is assumed that use of the text in a graduate, or even senior level, computer vision course would be supplemented by papers from the archival literature. Coverage is not intended to be comprehensive; only a modest set of papers are cited at the end of each chapter.

The early chapters begin at an intuitive level and progress towards mathematical models with the goal of intuitive understanding before formal characterization. Sections marked by an asterisk (*) are more mathematical or more advanced and need not be covered in a less technical course. To strengthen the intuitive approach, we have stayed with the processing of iconic imagery for the first eleven chapters and have delayed 3D computer vision until the later chapters, but it should be easy for experienced instructors to resequence them to fit a particular course or teaching style. There are many viable applications that are entirely 2D, and many concepts and algorithms are more simply taught in their 2D form. We provide some basics of pattern recognition in Chapter 4, so that students can consider complete recognition systems before the full coverage of image features and matching. A reader should have a good idea of 2D image processing applications after Chapter 4; Chapters 5, 6, and 7 add in gray-tone, color, and texture features. Chapter 8 treats image databases, a popular recent topic. Although some colleagues advised us to place this material near the end of the book, our goal of positioning it early in the chapter sequence is to reinforce the concepts of the prior chapters and to provide material that can lead to an excellent half-term project. Segmentation and matching are treated in their 2D forms in Chapters 10 and 11, so that the basic concepts are presented in a simple form, without introducing the complexities of 3D transformations.

Characteristics of the 3D world are briefly introduced in Chapter 2 and then are studied in much more detail in Chapter 12. Chapter 12 surveys qualitatively many aspects of how a 3D world can be perceived from 2D images: It concludes with quantitative models of stereo and study of the thin lens equation for depth-from-focus and resolving power. The transition to 3D computer vision is made in Chapter 13: The authors have found from their own teaching that the difficulty increases abruptly for students at this point. The use of matrices to model homogeneous transformations are included within the chapter rather than in appendices; the 3D versions are extensions of the simpler 2D versions given in Chapter 11. Least-squares fitting, introduced in a simple 2D context in Chapter 11, is also extended in Chapter 13. Non-linear optimization is introduced in a simple P3P context and then used for camera calibration including the modeling of radial distortion in a lens. Chapter 14 treats 3D models and the matching of models to 3D sensed data: it is of mixed difficulty. Chapter 15 discusses applications in virtual and augmented (mixed) reality and the role of computer vision techniques. Programming Language Issue

The book does not rely on any programming language, but uses a generic algorithmic notation. Commitment to a particular language is unnecessary and would be the wrong language for many readers. Students who are programmers should have little trouble implementing the algorithms, as our own students have shown. Examples will eventually be provided on the World Wide Web when appropriate and available, primarily so students can quickly experiment, secondarily so that they can study some sample code.

Several tools and libraries are available to instructors and students; for example, Khoros, NIH-Image, XView, gimp, MATLAB, etc. There are also packages that can be purchased from companies that make machine vision hardware. The authors have decided not to base the text on any specific software because, first, most readers would be using something else, and second, it would be counterproductive to bury the essence of the image operations within the complex framework of data structures and methods needed in an industrial strength system. Having first studied principles in an environment with few variables, the reader will then be better able to successfully choose and use an industrial system. Ways to Use the Text

The book material can be selected, and sometimes sequenced, in different ways according to the goal of the course and interests of the instructor and students.

Chapter 3, with brief summary of Chapter 2
A minimum usage would be 1-3 lectures in a data structures and algorithms course. Chapter 3, with some background from Chapter 2 contains motivational applications and programming exercises on 2D arrays, depth-first search, and the union-find data structure for sets. Chapters 1, 2, and 3, and optionally some of Chapters 4, 5, and 6
This could serve as an enrichment unit of 1 to 3 weeks for high school or lower division undergrads. The objective could be as simple as a term paper or as complex as group work on a program to, say, create a 2D parts recognition system based on connected components and prototype matching of feature vectors. Much of Chapters 1-11
This would be a survey of 2D material for an elective course for students in geography, natural resources or microbiology, for example, provided that many of the optional sections are passed over. If most sections of Chapters 1-11 are covered, this would constitute a semester undergraduate course in image processing and analysis with an introduction to computer vision. Most of the text
This would constitute a semester course in computer vision for the senior or first year graduate student level. There is more material in the book than can be covered well in one semester. Some sections will have to be ignored or surveyed and the reader should not be expected to be able to work homework problems in all sections. For the quarter system, Chapters 1-4, 6-12, and 14 make a good introduction to computer vision for undergraduates. For a one quarter graduate course, Chapters 1-4 can be minimally covered with the emphasis on Chapters 6-14 and a brief coverage of Chapter 15. For any graduate level course, it is expected that some papers from the current literature would also be covered.

We are grateful to our many colleagues, teachers, and students with whom we have shared our interests. They have contributed much to our growing field and shared their work and excitement. Many have generously supported this book with encouragement and with contributions of ideas, figures, and algorithms. Specific citations are given throughout the book. With regret we have left out some important contributions—a text can only be so large. The several reviewers and many colleagues who have given us feedback have significantly improved our work. In particular, for careful editing, we are indebted to Mohammad Ghavamzadeh, Nick Dutta, Kevin Bowyer, Adam Clark, Yu-Yu Chou, Habib Abi-Racked, and Valentin Razmov. We take responsibility for any errors remaining in the book and for providing corrections in the future.

This book was four years in the making. We are indebted to Paul Becker of Addison Wesley-Longman for much guidance in getting the project going and to Tom Robbins of Prentice Hall for finishing it off. We thank Cathy Davison and Lorraine Evans for their persistence in helping to resolve the many cases where permissions needed to be tracked down. We are grateful to Rose Rummel-Eury and Chanda Wakefield of ICC for meticulous editing of our notation and English, and for pushing the schedule. Creating the book was not light work and it certainly helped to have a team with both skill and humor.

Excellent introduction guide
By A Customer
The book presents a nice complement to Image Processing, Analysis and Machine Vision (Image Processing, Analysis, and Machine Vision, 2nd ed., M. Sonka, V. Hlavac, and R. Boyle, 1998, IPAMV). As the difference in names implies, Computer Vision is not appropriate as an image processing textbook. It contains sufficient information on image processing to implement computer vision algorithms, but the focus of the book is on image analysis and high-level vision. The result is that the combination of IPAMV and Computer Vision cover the spectrum from intensive image processing and manipulation to high level analysis, object recognition and content-based image retrieval.
Computer Vision contains sixteen chapters that fall into roughly four categories: overview, 2-D CV topics, 3D CV topics, and special CV topics. Since it was written with the intent of reaching a broader audience than IPAMV, this book is appropriate as a primary text or reference for a wider variety of courses. For example, it would be appropriate for courses ranging from an introduction to imaging for non-scientists to a sophomore-junior elective to a first-year graduate seminar.
The overview chapters (chapters 1-4) include a summary of problems in CV, imaging and image representations, simple binary image analysis and a survey of pattern recognition concepts. The 2-D processing topics (chapters 3, 5-7, and 11) include thresholding and binary image analysis, filtering and enhancement, edge detection, Fourier Transforms, color, texture, segmentation, and 2-D matching and pose calculation. The 3-D computer vision topics (chapters 9-10, and 12-14) include motion detection and analysis, range image analysis, stereo, calibration, intrinsic image analysis and line labeling, shape from X, and camera models. The special topics (chapters 6-8, 15-16) include color and shading, texture, content-based retrieval, virtual reality, and a set of case studies of CV systems. Different combinations of these are appropriate for different types of courses.
In comparison with other texts, the coverage of color and shading in Computer Vision is the best available without consulting a color reference such as Fairchild's Color Appearance Models (described below). However, it still does not contain adequate coverage of physical models of reflection or color appearance. The texture chapter is comparable to Sonka et. al., and the CBIR and VR chapters are unique. It is these latter two areas that give Computer Vision a nice high-level flavor and provides a reference for these growing areas of CV.
Like IPAMV, Computer Vision contains a large number of example images, diagrams, and algorithms. The writing is clear and the mathematics--when it is necessary to present it--is complete and accessible. Since the book is designed with multiple audiences in mind, the heavy mathematical sections are flagged and the book can be used effectively with or without them.
Of particular interest to CV practitioners and students dealing with issues of calibration, chapter 13 contains a nice description of Roger Tsai's camera calibration algorithm, complete with an example. Note that Trucco and Verri (see below) also cover Tsai's calibration algorithm.
Overall, the choice between Computer Vision and IPAMV should be based on personal preference, the focus of your course, and the background of your students. IPAMV will be more accessible to engineers and contains more in-depth coverage of image processing techniques. Computer Vision is more accessible to computer scientists and covers a number of higher-level aspects of CV that are either not covered or briefly covered in IPAMV. In a number of areas--texture, stereo, motion, calibration, and segmentation--the two books are quite similar and the differences are mainly in style and emphasis.

Great book but paperback version is a disappointment
By Jason
Shapiro's "Computer Vision" is an excellent book for someone looking for an introductory text in the field. The book is well structured and introduces fundamental concepts first, then uses these concepts to build on advanced approaches. The book assumes some knowledge of mathematics in linear algebra, calculus, and set theory, but does a good job of introducing the concepts before jumping into the math. Compared to other vision books this book is less focused on the math and more focused on conveying the concepts. Math intensive sections are noted up front in the table of contents.

The reason I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars is that the paperback is entirely in black and white. The original hardcover contained both color images and color plates. When these images are converted to B&W it defeats the purpose of having them as the reader cannot distinguish some of the effects occurring in the image which Shapiro is discussing (especially in sections discussing color image processing!). It is very disappointing that the publisher opted to go this route. If possible I recommend obtaining a hardcover which I give 5 out of 5 stars.

Good presentation of both beginning and advanced material
By calvinnme
Of the several computer vision textbooks that I haved owned and read, this book provides the best combination of introductory techniques with more advanced material in a very readable style.

The first two chapters are a very conversational overview of computer vision and image representation, but don't let this fool you. Starting in chapter three, the book becomes concise in presentation and in numerical examples. The authors starts out with the basics of binary image analysis which includes a very good discussion of image morphology. However, this is not an image processing book, so you should already be familiar with image processing on the same level as what is presented in Gonzales & Wood's "Digital Image Processing", which is my personal favorite among the various image processing texts. Next pattern recognition basics are discussed, including a section on neural networks that was clearer than anything I gleaned from Haykin's classic text on the subject. Next, the author moves into the realm of gray scale images by discussing the filtering and enhancing of images, which is similar to material in many image processing books. The basics of computer vision conclude with chapters on color, shading, and texture. Next, the book jumps into more advanced material that builds on the introductory material. For example, there are chapters on content-based image retrieval, a subject on which the author Linda Shapiro is conducting research at the University of Washington, and also on computing motion from 2D image sequences. Finally, the book tackles some 3D computer vision issues such as perceiving 3D from 2D images, object pose computation, and 3D models and matching using image "snakes". There are algorithms presented in pseudocode throughout this book, along with supporting mathematics, so the reader should have a good understanding of matrix algebra as well as calculus to really get the most from this book. The algorithms are concisely represented, and I had no trouble coding up a content-based image retrieval program based solely on the contents of this book. The pattern recognition chapter lacks a few details, and it might be helpful if the reader had a copy of Tom Mitchell's "Machine Learning", which parallels nicely with the pattern recognition chapter of Shapiro's book and is both complete and concise.

One of the most influential technical books ever written
By gkm77
In addition to providing a broad, albeit detailed introduction to UNIX, this book contains some of the most well-written and documented C code for students of the language. One chapter illustrates the construction of a simple calculator which gradually evolves into a stack-based virtual machine with a lex/yacc-based instruction set interpreter. The reader is guided through both the theory and practice of software design by demonstrating the almost "organic" growth of a complex software system out of a simpler one.
A definite must read.

This is a really neat book because of who wrote it and it's value to the history of Unix. It's a good read and very informative.
However, if you want to learn or get up to speed on Unix/Linux, this is not the book unless you are into Unix programming. Yes Unix is basically the same now as then but it has gone through some major evolving with different tools and servers. Check out my list of Unix books for learning Unix.

Not Just another average Horny Ghost story.
By nurseontherunn
Like many others, I imagine, I approached this book expecting it to be a joke, shallow, and horribly written. I could not have been more wrong though. Simply stated, this book is a masterpeice that will surely go down as a classic for the ages to sit along side such literary mainstays as The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick, Catcher in the Rye, Hitler's Homosexual Zombie Corpse, and The Grapes of Wrath. It's difficult to convey the sheer genius of this book without ruining the nuances and mysteries it contains, but one thing that deserves special mention is that the imagery of the Jimmy the Horny ghost is incredibly layered and complex serving to become analalogies for many things all at once. On the surface he seems superficial and nothing more than a B rate movie monster, but readily apparent is that he also represents the futility of living in a modern era. Upon re-reading, one discovers that even that is only a veil for the inadequecies of a mother's love in an era of modern technology. Even further down the rabbit hole however, it becomes unavoidable that at his core, Jimmy, horny ghost is a simple message, "Love each other."

Sensual, steamy and surprisingly touching...
By LynnLovesFiction
I'm very surprised at how much I like this book. I bought it because of the title, I thought it was an interesting twist and wondered if it was an erotica take on Ghost. I peeked inside, not really planning to read it today and was drawn into the story of loss and longing. I finished it in one sitting.

As expected, the erotic scenes were very erotic but I was unexpectedly touched by the connection between the characters. The ending was a complete surprise, didn't see it coming at all. I'm very happy my curiosity got the best of me and I purchased this book.

I had to grab this book because of the title. I mean who wouldn't want to have a sexy ghost boyfriend come visit. And I love Halloween!
Halloween AND romance? I'm there!
The author has a wonderful imagination and I was very impressed with the plot twist and the steamy scenes. If you like this kind of paranormal sexy romance, you are gonna love this one. The ending makes this book a 5 star for me!

Thanks Ms. Gaz! I really enjoyed it!

Michelle Arbeau can help you change your life through the language you use.
By Shannon M. Walbran
Michelle Arbeau is a thoughtful, gifted, and talented intuitive numerologist. I have personally had a session with her, and it helped me move through a crisis in my life.

In "The Energy of Words," Michelle applies her intelligence as well as her crystal-clear communication skills to help us understand that how we speak (and even how we think) can shape the events of our lives. This book is a treasure. I recommend it to anyone who is ready to make brave changes and step into an "I can" way of living.

Its kind of Enlightment!
By 108
Really interesting book about words and their "magical" use in life! At the end of the book there is fine appendix of different words, and that appendix pretty sums up whole book and one will learn that any word or sentence can be used for better life...thanks to Michelle Abbeau for this book "page turner"!

A Well Reminded truth
By Tiffani Dawson
I like what the author did in this piece by reminding reader to use their words carefully. I found that it was a very easy read however, I did not learn much from what I already knew. For instance, if you want to attract positivity change the use of the words you use. I would have preferred more detailed examples and something that did not seem so common sense. However, all in all it was a good read but I would not recommend it for readers who have experiences with the law of attraction. My 3 stars goes for the content itself and the easy read.

Very good but could use some examples of failed trades
By R. Shippy
So I read this book and I'm reading it again and taking some notes. I am new to Elliott Wave and I'm still on the fence about its legitimacy but this author puts forth a lot of compelling evidence towards the theory's effectiveness. The author writes pretty clearly and succinctly and its a straightforward read. There is a lot of "if X happens then why Y should do this, but if Z does this it changes X" sort of scenarios which I felt was good guidelines of how the man approaches Elliott Wave.

My biggest complaint about this book that I really really wish he would have shown is some charts of failed trades or times where Elliott Wave breaks down. No system works all the time right? He finds excellent charts to back up his text that lay out the wave patterns beautifully which is a good thing, but showing difficult examples of how to apply the theory, or just places where its hard to do would be invaluable as well. After I read it again I hope to have a better grasp on the content, and we'll see if I can make any money using it. That is the point after all!

Well written & insightful, well worth your time
By Michael B.
The use of the Elliott Wave Theory (EWT) has greatly improved my trading. While I would recommend beginning a EWT study with Frost & Prechter's "The Elliott Wave Principle", a clear candidate for second in a course syllabus is the "Five Waves". Ramki writes clearly and concisely about the very useful EWT tools & techniques and offers a large number of practical ways to use EWT for profitable trading. Indeed, long standing EWT fans could find in this work some new ways to use EWT that have great utility.

An initial read of "Five Waves" helped me to quickly deepen my understanding of EWT, to reinforce and clarify EWT ideas and guidelines, and, most importantly, provided numerous practical ways of using ones EWT analysis to map probable price direction and inflection points in the financial markets. Indeed Ramki's work is such a rich resource, plan to reread it in order to distill a ready reference set of notes or "flash cards" of practical tips to have close at hand for daily market/trading analysis.

A Must Read Master Peice for a much easier understanding for the Elliott Wave Theory.
By Amazon Customer
A genuine master piece in simplicity yet in details of interpreting "The Elliott wave Theory" and put it in practice , all put together in this great book, leading the reader in an interesting journey throughout all the different phases of the market up & down.

I absolutely enjoyed reading the book and practicing what i have learned from it, moreover i can't till how much i became overwhelmed seeing the market doing and behaving the exact way as described within the pages of this master piece of work.

Certainly my approach to the different markets has changed to a much better understanding -specially as a beginner- that after reading the book i could easily do my own analysis for the market and compare comfortably my charts with much more experienced traders with many years of trading, finding myself doing the right analysis, and that took me ONLY the time i read that book!

Thank you very much indeed Ramki for this great book, and also for keeping its price affordable for all categories of readers, to really help them
through their trading journey and make it much more simple, interesting, enjoyable and profitable.
