Has excellent chapters on business plans & pro-formas, but not the best guide to starting a business otherwise.

This book is dry and scholarly like a textbook as the title implies. It's not of much use to a small business or by any means covers a fraction of the things any business needs to know. The one area this bpbook is outstanding compared to others I've read about starting businesses, especially small ones is it's superior coverage of writing business plans and writing your pro-forma statement. For those two topics, it's essential reading unless you look for the info online.

Otherwise, Rieva Lesonsky's AWESOME "Start Your Own Business" is a TRUE encyclopedic resource covering virtually all aspects of starting any business, big or small, that is a "true MBA" on the subject. It covers many topics other books don't, especially this one, is an easy read that gets to the point, and only BOOKS on specific topics like e-commerce or accounting have much more to add.

This book seems to be taken from a similar text ...

This book seems to be taken from a similar text book by the authors and used in the Entrepreneurship 510 class at Devry University (just to be clear, my text book for this class is also by Bygrave and Zakarakis and simply entitled "Entrepreneurship" (my copy is a Devry ediion with the Devry cover on it but the text is actually from the authors above 2nd edition). Although the chapter layout is not quite the same, the text within it is the same. The ISBN on my book is 978-0-470-45037-6 (pbk).If you are planning on attending this school or notice that your Entrepreneurship class book has the same authors, I'd be wary of buying this book as I am certain that the information contained in both is extremely similar, just organized a little different.

Great Content

This content was the core of my Managing Growth Management MBA course. The info is invaluable. You can get almost as much out of reading this book as from taking a class. Make sure to go online and download the content that goes with the book. I used the financial statements downloaded for my business plan. I realized I needed the book while I was on vacation, only 2 days before class started and I had 2 chapters to read before class! Thanks to Amazon prime and the supplier, I got the book on time.

About the Author

Very, very intriguing. A must-read for those who enjoy this sort of "stuff."

Update, posted August 27, 2016. I have read this book once full-through. I re-read most of it a second time. I am now reading portions of it for the third time. The more I read it, the better it gets. One really has to read this carefully, questioning Hands as much as he questions Richard Dawkins, et al. It's very difficult to find flaws in his arguments or observations. It turns out that much of what we learned as "dogma" in high school biology or college Biology 101 is simply not entirely accurate. As with any subject, there are a lot of "myths," and half-truths. John Hands points these out. He just points them out. He seems to be looking for answers like the rest of us, and the more he reads, the more unsure he becomes. But to enjoy this book, read it quickly through the first time, and then go back and re-read slowly the parts that interest you the most. I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you truly try to understand what Hands is saying.

Wow! Thanks for the comment; it reminded me I needed to go back and rate the book after finishing it. It's still a 5+. I finished it and have gone back several times and re-read portions. I'm sure Richard Dawkins would love it.

Wow! The first 20 pages have me very, very intrigued. The negative reviews (one, two, and three stars at Amazon) have me perplexed with regard to my enthusiasm.

But if you are the kind of person who loves this kind of "stuff," this is a must-read, or at least something to explore. For now, a 5-star recommendation and then come back and expand. For those who suggest this book is too long, I can't imagine it being shorter and still having the necessary "gravitas" for such a subject.

The font, font size, and pitch are very, very appealing. It was first published in hardcover in 2016, but has a 2015 copyright by the author. Again, a British author, specifically English, which doesn't surprise. The Brits, Irish, and Scots simply do the best when it comes to this kind of writing.

A Powerful Argument for a New Scientific Paradigm

In 1956, Thomas Kuhn published one of the most influential science books of all time, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. This book introduced the concept of paradigms and how they change. In essence, when an existing scientific paradigm (or theoretical structure) begins to fail at explaining observations and those failures add up, the existing paradigm eventually collapses, and a new one rises to take its place. For a time, the advocates of the existing paradigm marshal their forces to defend and protect it; after all, the paradigm underpins the science curriculum and defines what it means to be a scientist.

Cosmosapiens is a significant contribution to a new era in scientific writing. The shelves are filled with books that trumpet the advances of science, the wonders of cosmology, the mysteries of quantum theory, and the power of Darwinian evolution. These books make it appear as if the current theories of science, from the Big Bang to the origin of life and Darwinian evolution, are now engraved in stone, forever to form part of the Scientific Curriculum.

But it turns out that when the power of critical thinking is used not to defend dutifully the existing scientific paradigm, but is instead used to challenge the assumptions and logical consistency of these theories, something remarkable happens: the old theories start falling apart.

John Hands is an outsider to the orthodox scientific community but possesses a sharp, critical mind, a clear writing style and unparalleled thoroughness. Some of the most mind-opening passages in the book concern his interaction with scientists he consulted for peer review. In one section he writes about a preeminent scientist who was so put off by the first sentence of his book, that he read no farther, thereby managing to pre-judge 550 pages of analysis filled with original and thought-provoking insights. The book, like The Trouble with Physics, Science Set Free, (and I hope my own book, The Collapse of Materialism), clearly and unequivocally shows that many of today’s leading scientists are not practicing science, if by that term we mean the open-minded search for truth. Instead, they are defending and protecting a belief system that they call a scientific paradigm. A paradigm, riddled with flaws and deep mysteries, including the gross assumptions of the Big Bang, the wild speculations of inflationary theory and the multiverse, and the unknown forces making up most of the universe that theorists have given names  “dark matter” and “dark energy”  but cannot explain.

When scientists stop criticizing their own theories, when they are not candid in revealing their assumptions, when they do not tell us what they don’t know, disclose the gaps in their theories, or reveal their uncertainties, they do a disservice to both science and the world at large. People depend on scientists to not only find the truth, but to tell the truth.

Cosmosapians should form part of a new curriculum in science classes as it is written in the true spirit of science: critical review of assumptions, rigorous reliance on logic and authority, and open-mindedness. Scientific truth cannot be reached by the stubborn insistence that any new theory will only be discovered through computer modeling or by the use of a multi-billion dollar scientific instrument. Nor is the search advanced by fooling ourselves that only in a particle will we find God.

It is time the leaders of modern science woke up and realized that the end is near for the existing paradigm. They can choose to hang on and go down with the ship, or take a few minutes and consider whether alternate viewpoints, which give mind, not matter, a predominant role in the formation of the cosmos, make more sense and do something their existing theories do not, which is to explain the world we live in. Cosmosapiens is necessary reading for anyone who doubts that the existing paradigm is nearing the point of collapse.

John Hands took on the nearly impossible task to summarize and evaluate the todays scientific knowledge and thus show where we are in our quest to understand the world and ourself. It is an excellent book that should be read by every college educated person to appreciate the difficulties it takes to advance our knowledge of the complexities of the world, to be more open minded to new ideas, and recognize that the development of our understanding of the world is a work in progress, far from being completed.

Excellent Music Guide

With the help of a teacher, this book is wonderful for the "older" student who is looking to play piano. For each chapter, there are rhythm, composition, and techniqal drills. The book comes with supplementary material, scales, cord progressions, circle of fifths, and transposing to other instruments. Each chapter progresses enough to keep you moving, but not so fast that you lose yourself. A definite reccommend to the beginning piano player.

[Update: December 2010 - the comb binding finally gave way, reducing the book to a mound of sheets after five years of use by my wife and numerous of our children. We're ordering another one soon. This time, we'll probably pull the pages, place them in sheet protectors, and put them all in a large D-ring binder. Still, perhaps the best piano book I've found for learners of almost any age!]

I was first introduced to this piano book while a music major. My background was with voice, guitar, and trumpet, but I was required to take piano each semester. Don't let the title imply that this is solely for group (class) piano lessons. It worked well in one-on-one sessions, and I bought it for my wife this past Christmas (I don't do well giving lessons to my own family members, and I'm still no piano virtuoso). She is studying on her own, and has a piano playing friend drop by for an informal lesson every couple of weeks.

The book starts out by having you explore the keyboard, playing with different groupings of keys, so you can hear their relationships. Students are encouraged, for example, to use only the black keys to pluck out familiar melodies, and then to make up a short melody of their own. After that basic orientation, it moves on to primary five-finger patterns in the simplest keys (C maj., G maj.) and builds from there. Chord charts help the students make the proper finger transitions along the way.

The exercises start simple, but move on to more rewarding little pieces in a surprisingly short time. As students become proficient in each new key, some exercises ask them to transpose them (play them in a different key) on the fly (without having the written music in front of them). This is a very important skill for any accompianist, who may need to play a given piece in a differnt key to accomodate a soloist's specific vocal range.

Unlike some basic piano texts that cover only parts of your learning journey (different books for beginners, intermediates, etc), this one will move you from the most basic exercises to very complex pieces by the end--it is a substantial volume. It does a good job of introducing chord progressions, and it handles the introduction of the minor scales very well.

The very end of the book contains complete written scales for every major and minor key, invaluable for drilling the basic skills as you progress.

Overall, a fantastic book! You will enjoy playing!

Great learning tool
By Getting older
This comprehensive book was recommended by my top-notch instructor. We use other books as well, but this is by far the most thorough for learning basic and advanced techniques. The instructions are clear and define why this technique is important. The exercises make the technique your own, and after several have been covered, they are followed by short, easy-to-learn pieces featuring those techniques.

Even if you're not a total beginner, this book offers a fantastic review of the important pianist techniques. I highly recommend it.

About the Author

As a naval architect and marine engineer, David M. Bourg performs computer simulations and develops analysis tools that measure such things as hovercraft performance and the effect of waves on the motion of ships and boats. He teaches at the college level in the areas of ship design, construction and analysis. On occasion, David also lectures at high schools on topics such as naval architecture and software development. In addition to David's practical engineering background, he's professionally involved in computer game development and consulting through his company, Crescent Vision Interactive. Current projects include a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, several Java-based multiplayer games, and the porting of Hasbro's "Breakout" to the Macintosh.

Glenn Seemann is a veteran game programmer with over a dozen games to his credit, for Mac and Windows systems. He's a co-founder with David Bourg of Crescent Vision Interactive, a game development company specializing in cross-platform games.

A Good, Accessible Book

This book introduces the reader to three key AI programming ideas, broadly, movement, pathfinding, and decision making.

The movement section covers intercepting and following, pathfinding provides a lot of good practical information on problems and algorithms to solve them, and the decision making section provides a good introduction to genetic algorithms, neural nets and fuzzy logic, topics which are hard to study abstractly on one's own time (at least for me.)

There are lots of code examples, and the math is accessible to anyone who at least suffered through high school calculus, regardless of whether any useful memory remains :). The intent of the code is explained after the code snippets, which is an excellent and thoughtful addition to such a book, since so many authors write code snippets, and force the reader to thoroughly understand them in order not to miss important points in the work, even though the reader may have no intention of ever actually implementing that code, and as a result, would rather not laboriously dissect tens or hundreds of code snippets in order to understand the full work.

Intelligent agents should steer clear from this book

Terrible and useless even for a book on AI for budding game developers. The theory and explanations in this book are sometimes decent but more often than not quite lacking. (es: in one of the first chapter the author uses Bresenham algorithm without taking the time to explain it). The use of tile based examples introduce unnecessary overhead, and the continuos attempts to introduce physics related code and references to the author's other book on game physics are just plain annoying. The range of subjects covered is very broad (chasing and evading, pathfinding, emergent behaviours, rule based reasoning, bayesian networks, neural networks, fuzzy logic, finite state machines, genetic algorithms), definitely too broad to treat each of these subject in decent depth and with clarity. Example code is of low quality and just superficially object-oriented. If you are looking for a decent introduction to game AI I recommend Matt Buckland "Programming Game AI by Example" and "AI Techniques for Game Programming".

Valuable Resource for Strategic Thinking

Strategy (like leadership) might well be typified in the same way Mark Twain described the weather: Everybody's talking about it, no one is doing anything about it.
While there is already a bountiful harvest of materials covering the strategy landscape, retired Air Force Major General William A. Cohen, Ph.D., has made a valuable, highly readable, and practical addition to the strategist's arsenal.
Perhaps surprisingly, General Cohen is an avid contrarian; very early in the book he rightfully takes on the silly notion of likening business to war. (A topic I also wrote about in 1996.) And he rails against the folly of trying to divine strategy from either statistical analysis or simplistic market stratification.
While there *are* fascinating accounts of military history in this general's book, they appear alongside equally well-researched tales from the contemporary business world (with some personal and historical political tales as well). The anecdotes serve to illustrate instructive strategic brilliance and stupidity, not as blueprints of strategies to imitate.
As Cohen relates early in the book, he "researched the greatest strategists and strategic thinkers of the millenia [including] strategists from both East and West over a period spanning more than 7,000 years of recorded history, in almost every country on earth...."
Well, the "almost every country on earth" part does seem to be a stretch, but beyond this hyperbole the book is well grounded in a wide variety of useful examples from many fields, places and times.
DECEPTIVE SIMPLICITY
As I remind my own clients, the critical part of strategy is to do strategic *thinking* before undertaking strategic planning. And Dr. Cohen's ten universal principles prime the strategic thinking pump.
Admittedly, a quick skimming of these principles might well elicit a ho-hum response. After all, 'Keep Things Simple' and 'Exploit Your Success' just don't scream "ground breaking." But to dismiss these principles as either obvious or old hat would be a mistake.
As with most clearly stated principles, Cohen's are easy to grasp superficially, more difficult to appreciate at a deeper level of meaning, and far more challenging to actually put into faithful practice.
Fortunately, Cohen puts substantial meat on these little bones. He offers bountiful food for thought in a book that is engaging, frank, wide ranging and highly digestible.
Read this book to gain valuable and useful against-the-norm insights into forming and applying strategy.

A journey to "the other side" of strategy's complexity

William Cohen's wide range of interests is explained by the variety of positions he has held throughout his career thus far. Currently, he is founder and president of The Institute of Leader Arts. He is also a retired major general from the U.S. Air Force Reserve. After graduating from West Point, Cohen flew 174 combat missions in A-26 aircraft in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters, and the Air Medal with eleven oak leaf clusters. He has written 53 books, including The Stuff of Heroes, The New Art of Leader and The Art of the Strategist. His latest is A Class with Drucker. He also has an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and M.A, and Ph.D. degrees from Claremont Graduate University.

In this volume, Cohen responds to questions such as these:

1. Why is strategy the key to success in any enterprise?
2. What are the essential principles of strategy?
3. Why and how must strategy be tailored to the given competitive environment?
4. How to seize a decisive advantage and then sustain it?
5. How to use strategic positioning?
6. How to formulate multiple, simultaneous alternatives prior to a major initiative?
7. How to practice timing and sequencing?
8. How to respond to a crisis?
9. How can the essential principles of strategy be applied most effectively?
10. To what extent are these principles universal?

To Cohen's substantial credit, he devotes relatively little attention to the "what" of organizational effectiveness and concentrates almost entirely on how to achieve it. In the Preface, he asserts that "tactical implementation should be directed toward implementing the right thing - a good strategy. Good implementation of a bad strategy is doing the wrong thing in the right way. It is optimizing the kind of approach that will eventually lead to defeat, not to triumph." In the business world, an inappropriate strategy (however effectively it may be implemented) will eventually lead to failure, not success. In this context, I am again reminded of what Cohen's graduate school professor and mentor, Peter Drucker, observed in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."

I especially appreciate Cohen's provision throughout his narrative of dozens of real-world examples to illustrate his key points. Within each chapter devoted to a specific essential principle, he includes a list o0f suggested action steps to achieve a specific objective. In Chapter 2, for example, here is what he recommends to ensure that an organization gains, and keeps, its competitive advantage:

1. Analyze the situation carefully.
2. Seek hidden opportunities and new solutions.
3. Act now!
4. Act boldly.
5. Keep the pressure on.

Granted, none is a head-snapping revelation. Cohen is a pragmatist who places greatest emphasis on achieving the desired result(s). He explains each of the previously listed five points within a context and cites a specific situation that illustrates the importance of that point. Each chapter begins with one or more appropriate quotations. In Chapter 7 in which he explains how to prepare multiple, simultaneous alternatives (i.e. a scenario of contingencies), he offers these quotes:

From Genesis 13.9: "If thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right, then I will go to the left."

Mao Tse-Tung: "To achieve victory we must as far as possible make the enemy blind and deaf by sealing his eyes and ears, and drive his commanders to distraction by creating confusion in their minds."

Obviously, Mao Tse-Tung had read Sun Tzu's The Art of War, one of Cohen's favorite sources.

To assist his reader's understanding, he also concludes each chapter with a "Strategist's Log" section that serves as a summary of those points and thus facilitates a review of them later. From the beginning, Cohen establishes a personal rapport with his reader, functioning as a tutor whose approach is informal and supportive rather than highly structured and pedantic. He prefers to identify options and suggest possibilities rather than insist or even assert. As I read this book and others he has written, I view him as a companion on my journey of discovery. Without ever being intrusive, Cohen proceeds from one chapter to the next, connecting ideas and refining insights with both rigor and sensitivity. He believes (and I agree) that effective leadership is both an art and a science. What he refers to as the "art" of the strategist suggests a level of thinking that can only be reached after formal training in both induction and deduction as well as mastery of various skills such as situation analysis and problem solving. The analytical process becomes art only when it has formulated and then transcends meticulous craftsmanship.

In this context, I am again reminded of an observation by Oliver Wendell Holmes: "I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity." Cohen's purpose in this brilliant volume is to accompany his reader during a journey of exploration within the dimensions of strategy. The ultimate destination? The other side of strategy's complexity.

Readable. Helpful or not, depends.

I am skeptical of all books promoting N principles/rules for subject X, whereas N ususally is 10 and X is either leadership or any term identical with improvement. However, I cant help myself from reading them coz the supporting cases/stories are always interesting and readable, especially the war/battle ones. This book written by a retired general is no exception. I dont think the principles are easily adaptable to a company, which the author admit so. However, his writing is smooth. His cases and quotes are good. Readable, for sure. Helpful or not, depends.
