The author also derives exemplary element frontal matrices for different one-, two-, or three-dimensional mesh-based computations. These matrices can be used as references for testing the developed parallel direct solvers.

The book has all the elements required for a reader to successfully implement mesh-based adaptive end-to-end solution. The author's explaining ability is remarkable as are the results he claims to achieve with his software. Although quite expensive, the book is certainly worth is price and may accelerate your research by effectively fast-forwarding your knowledge to the frontiers of the adaptive computational methods field.

Great, comprehensive book on new generation multi-frontal solvers

I wish this book was on the market while I was trying to familiarize myself with a subject of fast, direct solvers for problems like Finite Element Method. Certainly, there are multiple papers available, but purchasing them one by one just to find out that something was missing anyway was disappointing. This is why I've given a warm welcome to this book that is comprehensive in its nature and covers practically everything that should be said in this subject. There is a multitude of examples and clear illustrations. Efficiency comparison with the traditional solvers make it also clear that this is where the future is.

About the Author

Patrick Tilley was born in Essex in 1928, but spent his formative years in the border counties of Northumbria and Cumbria. After studying art at King's College, University of Durham, he came to London in 1955 and rapidly established himself as one of Britain's leading graphic designers. He began writing part-time in 1959.

In 1968 he gave up design altogether in favour of a new career as a film scriptwriter. Work on several major British-based productions was followed by writing assignments in New York and Hollywood. His books have been translated into several languages, and have achieved cult-novel status.

A solid ending to the series, but not perfect.

The epic Battle of the Trading Post and the bloody Battle of Twin Forks have changed the political balance of power in post-apocalypse North America. The Plainfolk are now determined to work together to prepare for the coming of their messiah, the Talisman, whilst the Iron Masters are wracked by internal disputes. Aware that the Iron Masters will not simply accept the loss of so many of their troops in recent battles, Cadillac and Roz decide to travel into Ne-Issan to secure peace and encourage the beginnings of a new civil conflict within the country. Meanwhile, Steve's attempts to keep a foot in both the Plainfolk and Federation camps continue as his star rises and he is made a member of the ruling First Family. But the higher he climbs, the greater the distance to fall...

When the captive Clearwater goes into labour at the precise moment Mount Saint Helens explodes with tremendous force, the First Family realises the Talisman Prophecy's fulfilment is at hand and the future of their war to take control of the surface world is about to be decided.

Earth-Thunder is the sixth and concluding volume of The Amtrak Wars. Patrick Tilley envisaged a twelve-volume epic divided into two sub-series spanning decades of history. However, after completing the sixth book he felt burnt-out and wanted to take a break. Life seems to have gotten in the way, and he has not released a new book since, despite occasional rumblings that a seventh book, called Ghost Rider, would appear. Whilst regrettable, it does mean that The Amtrak Wars has, for an SF/fantasy series, a surprisingly dark and grim ending (although not completely shorn of hope) which avoids cliche.

There's a nice reversal of roles in this book as Roz joins Cadillac on the surface and Steve has to return to the Federation, where he scales the ladder of promotion and success and has to navigate between different factions within the First Family with different visions of how the Federation is to move forwards. Whilst an interesting diversion it's not entirely successful. Part of the fun of the series is seeing Steve on the front line surviving by his wits. Having him back at base trying to learn Japanese and getting dubious offers from conflicting factions in the government is less compelling. This is made up for by Roz and Cadillac's journey into Ne-Issan, playing off the factions against one another in a morally dubious story of murder, skulduggery and intrigue. It's good stuff.

Where the novel succeeds is the final part of the book. With the series coming to an end Tilley - hardly a squeamish author at the best of times - has no problem with gunning down major characters and a real sense of the story spinning out of control comes to the fore, culminating in a surprising climax. There is then an epilogue (unless you have the 1998 edition, which removed it) which clarifies some of the events which took place in the two years following the end of the series which does give a much better sense of conclusion and finality to the story. Perhaps not ideal, but certainly better than getting no answers at all.

Earth-Thunder (***�) brings The Amtrak Wars to a reasonable, if surprisingly bleak, conclusion. Second-hand copies of the book are available via Amazon.co.uk but not on Amazon.com (not for less than $40 anyway).

Great for unblocking

I used this book for a poetry workshop as exercises to create new connections. People really liked the exercises and most felt it loosened up their creativity. I only wish there were more games. I was going to have the workshops once a quarter but everyone wanted one next month so I guess they liked it!

Want to know Surrealism? Start here!

I have to give the book high marks, not for the purpose I bought it for (fun party games) but for how much I learned about the Surrealist movement through reading it.

What you will find here is a series of exercises and games and thought experiments that will help you breakdown reason and challenge assumption. Certainly one can see the effectiveness of such pastimes among a group of committed revolutionaries, like those who arose in the 1920's.

In our era, Surrealism has been distilled into Dali prints hung on 20-something walls (I have been guilty) and there is little understanding of what Breton and Ernst and the others were trying to say and to accomplish.

This book is worth a look, if you want to understand, or remember that understanding is pale and sickly, when objects are simply taken at their word.

Surrealism is not my favorite art movement, but perhaps it should be. Thoroughly anti-bourgeois, but not proletarian, Surrealism reflects my values back at me and asks me to deconstruct them.

Seventeenth-century painter Nicolas Poussin once said that Caravaggio came into the world to destroy painting. Helen Langdon's marvelous biography suggests that rather than destroying painting, the Milanese artist gave it a new lease on life. Upon his arrival in Rome, Caravaggio ended a tradition of Italian Renaissance painting with his radically new naturalistic style, which continues to dazzle and influence viewers today. Beautifully poised between biographical scholarship and artistic appreciation, Langdon's book provides the reader with a complex, fascinating portrait of Caravaggio, still the rebel and outsider of the popular imagination, but also immersed in the Roman world of art, politics, and patronage. Some of the finest sections of the book vividly evoke the streets and brothels of early 17th-century Rome, which provided Caravaggio with the inspiration for many of his early works. By contrast, the later sections--which deal with Caravaggio's exile and commissions in Naples, Malta, and Sicily--seem rather brief and truncated, giving the final third of the book a rather unbalanced feel. This is, however, partly due to the elusiveness of Caravaggio himself--with little direct contemporary documentation on the painter, he often slips into the shadows, evading the scrutiny of even the most persistent biographer.

Langdon's achievement here is to produce a compelling portrait of the artist that throws new light on his paintings. At once more scholarly and less polemical than Desmond Seward's 1998 Caravaggio: A Passionate Life, Langdon's study of the Renaissance painter conveys a picture of Michelangelo da Caravaggio (1573-1610) as an artist amid rivals and intrigues without losing sight of his work and its significance. Not that Langdon downplays the juicy bits: she offers documented details on the scandals and rivalries, but does so without sensationalism or dependence on conjecture. While Seward railed against homoerotic interpretations of Caravaggio's works, and seemed particularly hostile to Derek Jarman's highly speculative 1987 film, Caravaggio, Langdon is unfailingly even-handed. In keeping with her focus on Caravaggio the artist (as opposed to Seward's man of faith), Langdon presents the relationship with Cardinal Francesco del Monte, for whom he served as artist-in-residence, in terms of career significance rather than personal relationships. Through del Monte, Caravaggio made contacts with church officials and patrons, and also with other painters, many of whom became rivals or detractors. The last section of the book is a balanced account of Caravaggio's induction into the Catholic order of the Knights of Malta (an honor seemingly requiring him to have lied about his family's lineage), his imprisonment in a Maltese dungeon for dueling with a Knight of higher rank and his legendary escape. Without downplaying Caravaggio's personal oddity and violent tendencies, Langdon approaches her subject with a sympathetic yet almost clinical eye. She scours the archives, examining police documents and bringing court records to light. In the end, she produces a finished view of an artist who helped redefine realism in art, even as his increasingly humbling depictions of people alienated him from painters and patrons, and fed his public image as a scoundrel and madman. 56 b&w illustrations, 42 color plates. As clear a portrait as we can hope for, currently...

Langdon's research payed off in this beautiful look at one of the Late Renaissance's most powerful (and mysterious, and notorious) painters. Sadly, most of what we know of Michelangelo Caravaggio's life is through second-hand sources -- police records and such -- but Langdon seems to have pored through every bit of esoterica related to the painter's relation to his time, his culture, and his peers. What we get for her troubles is a portrait of a man whose devotion to religion was so strong that he would do anything -- including lying about his lineage -- to maintain a secure place as a "defender of the faith."
Sadly, the one-star review on this page has a point: many of Langdon's statements are qualified with "perhaps", "almost certainly," etc. This, however, is one of the prices we pay for any attempt to pin down an elusive person who lived on the fringes of a society which passed four hundred years ago. I much preferred this reading to, for example, Desmond Seward's CARAVAGGIO of the same year, in which the author ranted against any recent interpretations of homoeroticism in Caravaggio's sensual paintings, and even against the concept of Caravaggio -- a notoriously violent and tumultuous figure in the history of painting -- having actually earned his lifetime reputation as a criminal!
Beautifully illustrated, well documented, and written with both a sensitivity towards the subject and a refusal to let that sensitivity obscure "the dirt". ..this is a significant addition to the study of one of painting's more fascinating figures. I highly recommend it.

Light inside the Shadows

I found this book to be very entertaining as well as educational. The author did a great job of recreating the setting of Carravaggio's life; the important characters and atmosphere of all the places the artist lived in his nomadic life. Also, I look at Carravaggio's paintings in a new light and am even more impressed and moved by them than previously. Carravaggio's was a tragic life. The author captures the sense of impending doom that hanged over the artist's head like an executioner's sword. The author did a great job of bringing the artist to life with what little is actually known about him, through records, accounts, and most of all his paintings. Through it all there is the sense of an awesome talent and fragile ego, that both humbles and angers all who knew him. I came away realzing that Carravaggio was a man of his times as well as an artist of all time.

Everything you need to know - and more - can be found in this book. Unfortunately, some parts suffer from a clunky writing style and odd turns of the phrase. Better editing would have helped it immensely.

About the Author

Emily Weiss, PhD, CAAB is Vice President of Shelter Research and Development for The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  She has been involved in shelter behavior for over 25 years.  She has published numerous peer reviewed manuscripts as well as book chapters, and serves on advisory boards and committees of national shelter programs.

Heather Mohan-Gibbons, MS, RVT, ACAAB is the Director of Research and Applied Behavior for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Her current work focuses on improving the lives of animals and reducing their risks in communities. For the past twenty years, she worked professionally with exotic and domestic animals in veterinary clinics, universities, federal and state governments, animal shelters, and her own animal behavior business. She has lectured extensively on animal behavior and has published several peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.

Stephen Zawistowski, PhD, CAAB is Science Advisor of The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  He is a certified applied animal behaviorist and chaired the Animal Behavior Society’s Board of Professional Certification from 1998-2007.  He co-edited Animal Shelter Medicine (with Lila Miller, 2004) and the second edition in 2013.

Great book! It was easy to read and follow

Great book! It was easy to read and follow. The book explains and identifies concepts, theories, actors and levels of analysis used in World Politics. It has everything you need to know for an international politics course with graphs and demonstrations of different level of analysis and theories. The author is interesting and informative. I enjoyed it.
