Disturbing, compelling

I finished this disturbing book yesterday and spent today thinking about it. Two points I'll make up front:

1) I wasn't there, so I see no reason to disbelieve the writer unless some other information comes out.
2) Whether or not the story is true or false, here's a truth: There are people in this world that consider those that cannot help themselves (children, vulnerable adults, animals) a burden and do not care for them as they would someone they love. I've seen and experienced enough in my lifetime to know bad things happen, and the lack of love brings forth such events.

The story is about Lily, who lived with a mother and stepfather in London, and after an assault by a family member, was sent with her brother and sister to live with their father in Ireland. It didn't get much better there, as the father was often away, and the kids suffered neglect. When the community found out, they were taken in by a group of nuns and endured more hardship. When Lily grew up, she finally got away and met a man that loved her and continued to attempt to put her childhood behind her by giving her own kids the love she wasn't given.

Overall this was a compelling read that may turn away the skeptics and bring believers to tears. I liked the story, but sometimes, the truth is too hard for people to bear; so I recommend this story with a warning it's not for the faint of heart. Overall, well done, four stars!

Hard to Read

I downloaded this book on my kindle because a friend (who usually doesn't read much) said she LOVED it and that I HAD to read it. I've read some pretty disturbing child abuse stories before, but believe me when I say that readers who couldn't put down books like "A Child Called It" and "They Cage the Animals at Night" won't be enthralled with this particular title.

I found this book hard to read (and I'm a high school teacher who reads my fair share of bad material)--this book jumped back and forth: the author was beaten and then the next paragrah will go on and on about "....why did I suffer this abuse?" Over and over again.

I assume this book was maybe done as part of the healing process and is in journal-format, which is why it jumped around (shaved head on one page and a few pages later, someone is dragging her by her hair). For a healing journal, it wouldn't have to be entirely accurate for the order in which things happened.

If the author had stuck to the storytelling of abuse and told it all as it was and then added a chapter at the end as a reflection to talk about how she felt about it then and now, I think it would have worked much better. A reader would have been horrified by the abuse, which really does sound awful (and shame on those nuns and anyone who looked the other way) but is instead sidetracked by the reflective comments. However, to go from a near-rape in one paragraph to three paragraphs about how no one ever treated her well and she doesn't know why; it just didn't work and left me frustrated as a reader.

sad but good,heart braking and disappointing

People stop complaining this is a good, sad book.I'm a 11 year old girl who loves to read and these hateful comments are ridiculous.She already went thru all of this as a child and your adding on top if it.I think she is a really good person and from all the people who read this book i'm the only one who truly cares about her.When i read this i cried.I wish Lily lots of luck and love with her life.xoxox

True Life Adventures of logging in Maine!

Are you looking for a terrific book of true adventure short stories? Fannie Eckstorm ran a bunk house in Bangor Maine at the turn of the century and tells us tales she heard from the loggers themselves. Penobscot Man is one of the most sought after books about the rough and tumble men that cut the white pines during Winter and drove them downriver to saw mills at Millinocket and Bangor during the Spring meltwater floods. So "put on your caulk boots, grab your peavy, and forget the meaning of fear", Penobscot Man will thrill your heart and you just might learn something too! This classic of American literature is currently out of print but allways in demand!

Penobscot Man

Eckstrom does an excellent job depicting 19th century life on the West Branch of the Penobscot River. She draws a vivid picture of the long days, harsh conditions, and undaunting pride which permeated the life of a river driver. The river landmarks are accurately described and can be visited today, nearly 100 years after the original publication date. This book is a must to read for anyone who visits the West Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine.

About the Author
Yuan Taur is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. He spent twenty years at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center where he won numerous invention and achievement awards. He is an IEEE Fellow, Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Electron Device Letters, and holds thirteen US patents.

Tak H. Ning is an IBM Fellow at the T. J. Watson Research Center, New York, where he has worked for over 35 years. A Fellow of the IEEE and the American Physical Society and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, he has authored more than 120 technical papers and holds 36 US patents. He has won several awards, including the ECS 2007 Gordon E. Moore Medal, the IEEE 1991 Jack A. Morton Award and the 1998 Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation Outstanding Research Award.

The quality of hardcover version in reprinted 2012 edition becomes good

I must revise my previous comment about this book. I am suprised to find this 2nd edition was re-printed in 2012. The quality of this reprinted version is as good as I expect. the binding is good. I thought to increase the rating to 5 star. But one thing make me to rate one star to 4 star. Why the seller did not state the bad quality of binding of 2009-edition hardcover? We want to pay for a good book, not only good in content but also in quality.

In fact this is the one of the first books about device physics I have ever read. I have no background in device design but I am interested in and have some knowledge of the physics in device. I learn a lot after I finish the first round of read of this book. You need to have some basic knowledge of device physics before reading the book. You cannot only rely on this book to be a guru in device physics. What this book does best is to show all the relevant aspects in device physics and add proper amount of equation to make explanation. This is too concise for the beginner to understand but it is good for an engineer involved in this field for several years.I have to mention that there are some bolded words in each chapter of the book. They are in fact the insight from author's tens of years of device design experience. I stronly recommend you to read and read again. This book is not for one-time use. You must read it and think about the words and equations again and again. From the content and organization of this book I rate it 4.5 or 5 star.

But what really disappoint me is that the binding quality of hardcover version is too bad. I always buy hardcover version book if I think the author is authoritive in the field and the content and writing is very good. I am afraid that my book will fall apart after frequent of use. I am not sure if this is the reason why the price of hardcover is slash down to close to the paperback. I rate 2 star for its binding quality.

So the total is 3 or 3.5 star.

Taur/Ning (IBM) - Fundamentals of Modern VLSI Devices

This is the best book currently available on device electronics. Written by renown contributors to the field from IBM, it takes the complexity of integrated semiconductor devices down to its first-order, industry-proven essentials. In this respect, "Fundamentals of Modern VLSI Devices" comes in line with what I consider to be the epitoms of the class of lasting transistor books, Alvin Phillips' "Transistor Engineering" (McGraw-Hill 1962) and Andrew Grove's "Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Devices" (Wiley, 1967). The treatment of the subject matter is outstandingly thorough, covering the basic device physics and technology integration of bipolar and field-effect metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOSFET) and highlighting the subtle tradeoffs involved in modern transistor design and optimization. The approach is first-order analytical, with refrainment from the use of computer-simulations tools that would have run the risk of diminishing the teaching strength of the book. Equations and parameters provided are checked continuously against the reality of silicon data. This makes the book invaluably useful in practical transitor design as well as in the classroom. I keep it on my desk at all times. The bipolar-transitor part takes the reader all the way from the classical junction transistor to the modern polysilicon-emitter, SiGe-base variety. The MOSFET part is equally sweeping, coming as far as to the technology node (gate length) of 100 nm. Each chapter concludes with real-life exercises that actually extend the depth of analysis, getting the reader directly involved.

If you seek to understand devices from a physical point of view this book just fails to live up to it.I read the chapters on MOSFETs' thoroughly and also the section of second chapter which describes MOS capacitor.The feel you get when you read the book is somewhat hard to write, it has all the relevant equations but lacks a physical insight.For example the quantum confinement of the inversion layer is so briefly described that someone reading the topic for the first time will never be able to make sense out of it.For those who know device physics, rather well, this book provides great material, drawn primarily from the authors' experience at IBM's T J watson research lab.As a suggestion Dr.Taur has a few papers, available online for free download at IBM's research and development journal,it will be a good idea to explore it and the other allied material appearing there.For the starter I will suggest to pick up Tsividis book on "Operation and modeling of MOS Transistor" and concurrently try the present volume.A better physical model can be developed.

Why doesn't the movie look as inspired as the book?!

This book should be absolutely a must for art students, directors (especially art directors), illustrators, designers, fantasy and science fiction readers, writers (current and future) and visualists of all genres and mediums.While the movie looks pretty good these ideas in sketches and designs and character studies-as well as full production scenes-are more inspired and potentially more appealing than the film ('potentially' because most artists and art students will get this more than most people who just watch the movies).Some of the technical work while well designed is a bit flat. Even that is a small nitpick. This book is a well researched view into the behind the scenes ideas that make the visual essence of the film. I don't think a person even needs to like the Star Wars stories to enjoy this book on a visual level.This hardback edition is a beautiful addition to unique coffee table books. It's a blast to browse through all these artists' heads as the ideas of forms, lines and color spill out onto the paper, boards, canvas and digital screens.The compositions contained within these pages are wonderfully inspired, strange and mythic.

Each life is lived as an integral fragment of other cycles nested within increasingly larger cycles. These larger cycles contain smaller cycles and still smaller cycles because they contain universal fractal patterns which repeat themselves in non-linear self- similar way as described in the axiom “ As above, so below”. In many traditions, if not all, these hidden designs are recognized as fate.

Anngwyn St. Just Ph.D. is a systemically oriented social traumatologist who holds advanced degrees from The Western Institute for Social Research and the University of California at Berkeley. She is a cultural historian, psychotherapist and somatic educator, who specializes in developing multi-modal, cross cultural methods based upon easily transmitted concepts for trauma education and recovery. Currently Director of the Arizona Center for Social Trauma, �Anngwyn has traveled widely in North and South America, Europe and Russia teaching innovative ways of resolving individual and social trauma.

Trauma, Time, Space and Fractals

In this new book Dr.St.Just expands and makes a critical contribution to not only the study of social trauma but to a more general wisdom as well. Exploring the nature of time itself, she brilliantly describes how historical forces diminish our possibilities of peace and reconcilliation.

I am excited to recommend this book for those who would like to more comprehensively understand and more clearly see the possibilities of deep resolution not only of what is occurring within our own psyches but also in the different levels of the worlds we inhabit.

Alchemy and Trauma

fast and easy reading on complex and deep dynamics.......

That are rarely addressed in our culture. How is it the the Japanese, a country devastated by US nuclear bombs, could be persuaded to build 48+ nuclear reactors in an earthquake vulnerable area? Though I never thought about it until I read it in the pages of this book, the answer to that question is worthy of pursuit and can explain a lot about what happens in our world. Answering that question completely will lead you to many books and thoughtful analysis, but the question was raised by Angwynn St Just, and the answer deserves to be recognized, particularly by those who are trying slow the devastation seen daily on our tv news. I recommend all St Just's books, we all need help and each other to maintain Relative Balance in an Unstable World.
