Syzygy: Reflections on the Monastery of the Seven Rays, by Tau Palamas

The two worlds of Voudon and Gnosis merged together within the unique expression of a religious community called the Monastery of the Seven Rays. Having a history that is as colorful and mysterious as the variety of individuals involved in this esoteric movement of the spirit, the Monastery stands apart from traditional expressions of monasticism in the East and in the West by existing on a physical plane, but more especially by also being a psycho-spiritual locale, accessible to all who knock upon her celestial doors. For each Postulant of this Monastery there is a particular work to do, a particular Gnostic space to dwell within, and a particular sacred injunction to fulfill for the betterment of the globe. SYZYGY by Tau Palamas is one such legacy. It is simply the reflections of one student of this delightful and challenging superstructure of mind-stuff--The Monastery of the Seven Rays."This true Labor of Love offers one of the best introductions to our School and Work that we've read. From the curious seeker to the seasoned Pilgrim on the Path, there is guidance and illumination in this volume which will speak time and again to the deepest levels of spiritual longing...With gratitude to Tau Palamas, we whole heartedly recommend SYZYGY as one of the best books of the year!" --Kyle Fite, SGM, Ordo Templi Orientis Antiqua & La Couleuvre Noire"A wonderful exposition and elaboration of the Monastery of Seven Rays material through the eyes of a true modern-day Christian mystic! I highly recommend it to anyone studying the work of Michael Bertiaux, but the Opus stands alone in that you could create a system of Work from this book alone! For those interested in Martinism and Ecclesiastical Gnosticism this book is also of great value, and certainly compliments the work of L'Ordre Martinesiste de Chenu (it is on the reading list)! Highly recommended!"--Kevin Davis, Sov. Insp. V, Ordre Martinesiste de Chenu

Review
"Your book, Syzygy, is terrific! I see it as very, very much in the Martinist spirit. It is a valid and powerful emanation of the Monastery of the Seven Rays mysticism."~Michael Bertiaux, author of The Voudon Gnostic Workbook "+PALAMAS, who has studied in the 'Monastery of the Seven Rays' and deeply digested its teachings, provides much illumination in this beautiful book. he not only presents the Monastery's teachings in an accessible way, but also correlates them with more traditional monastic teachings and practices. He then provides helpful and clear directions for the person who chooses to move beyond reading to experience. Further, his art accompanies each chapter, providing further potent gateways to the mysteries discussed herein."~Bishop John Plummer, PhD, author of The Many Paths of the Independent Sacramental Movement

From the Back Cover
"'Syzygy' is the appropriate name for this text, yoking together as it does a wide variety of divergent streams. This is at one and the same time a deeply personal account of Tau Palamas' own spiritual journey and a rigorous examination of the Monastery of the Seven Rays' practice in relation to other currents and approaches. The journey is a sometimes dizzying one as Tau Palamas reels from one subject to the next, and from personal reflections to deeply theoretical speculations, the whole thing supplemented with a parade of stark and arresting images from his own paintbrush. This is a demanding text, perhaps at times too adventurous; one certainly not for the tyro. Its ultimate effect, however, is properly magical, and no one interested in contemporary magical praxis and Bertiaux's work will be left disappointed."
~Abathur V, Grand Master of the Friary/OSF

"A tour de force of creative synthesis, this extraordinary book sets out to fuse one of the most avant-garde branches of contemporary Western esotericism with the traditions of monastic prayer, contemplation and ritual, and carries out this more than usually demanding task with aplomb. Students of the mysteries weary of the rehashing of familiar teachings that dominates today's occult publishing scene will find it a welcome if dizzying breath of fresh air."
~John Michael Greer, Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America

"Syzygy is a fascinating exploration of the Voudon-Gnostic philosophy of Michael-Paul Bertiaux and the Monastery of the Seven Rays. The author, a Gnostic Bishop, takes us through his practice and experiences, telling us about meditation and prayer, Saints and spirits, magick and healing and even death and the dead. In the second half of the book, he offers practical ritual techniques to experience what he calls "the Otherworld" for oneself. I suspect students of the Voudon-Gnostic coursework will find this text an invaluable companion for their studies."
~Aaron Leitch, author of Secrets of the Magickal Grimoires and The Essential Enochian Grimoire.

inspired
By Jason R. Carpenter
I am a student of the Monastery of Seven Rays, first and foremost, and that colors this review. I ordered Syzygy at the suggestion of my mentor in the M7R after several months of financial difficulty it reached my hands a couple weeks ago only to be devoured.

Knowing there were two editions, a full color hardcover and a b&w paperback, I opted for the hardcover and the artwork is gorgeous but sometimes the size obscures some of the beautiful detail in the paintings. The art is stunning in spite of this and fits very neatly into the school of iconography, images of saints and Christ abound and to some these may make you scratch your head as many think the M7R is a Thelemic or Typhonian order and as this wonderful book shows, it is not not a Thelemic order but is rather what you need it to be. People of all walks of life find their way BACK to the Monastery, Christians, Thelemites, Muslims, traditional African practitioners will all find a home and something to remember in the work of the M7R and that is something that Palamas makes clear in this book.

The authors background in Christian mysticism and the monastic lifestyle shines through in this book as he examines in hyperkinetic style the work of the Monastery, examining the Voudon Gnostic Workbook from that particular approach and it is inspiring to read about, drawing you into the system he lays out, painting a vista that is beautiful and elegant and especially makes you want to be a part of.

When I got this book, I had reached a stumbling block in my own work with the M7R material. An impasse. In reading this book I was inspired in how to approach my lessons and broke through the barrier I'd been struggling with opening up new roads in my work. I don't think any review could do it justice without sounding like a sycophant for Tau Palamas and how much this book helped me. So let's look at it from two perspectives.

Are you a student of the Monastery? Of Michael Bertiaux's work? If so, this book should be on your shelf alongside the VGW and Voudon Gnosis by David Beth. Where this book comes into play is the approach. Comparing it to Beth's book, Voudon Gnosis, Syzygy is more about the spiritual side, the way of life of the adherent to the Monastery teachings and deepening that experience. Beth's book is about the Magick, hardcore magical theory and examination through the lens of his Merciless Path school of thought. It is in contrasting Beth's essay on Love in Voudon Gnosis and Palamas' chapter on Caritas that we find the root difference in these two approaches. Read both closely and everything spins in wildly different directions.

With Beth's work you get the sense that the OTOA and LCN are some sort of hardcore, left hand path movement. Palamas though, you see the right hand path, rather the middle path as the community has moved so far to the left in the last ten years that the middle is the right, expressed so beautifully, and succinctly, that we are reminded of the tradition of not just the Monk orders, but also of the Rosicrucians. Bertiaux's work puts a strong emphasis on healing, one that could be missed if one obsesses over time travel, sexual gnosis, aiwaz physics, Means, and Voudontronic Computers too much in their exploration of the system he lays out in his published and unpublished writings. Previous writers on Bertiaux and his work have missed so much of the beauty of the spirituality he lays bare because of their focus on the magical power and this is, I think, misguided and hopefully rectified by Syzygy. The chapter on Caritas alone brought a tear to my eye because of it's devotion.

The second approach is of the non Voudon Gnostic. Is this book good for those of us not following that path? Yes. Emphatically yes. Palamas is writing about a mindful existence, developing consciously as a spiritual being and opening up, giving over and experiencing God, the HGA etc. The exercises in part two of the book could be easily adapted to other religions with some thought. The first part of the book which discusses various aspects of monastic lifestyles places, to me, an emphasis on Lectio Divina, reading of scripture in a meditative, purposeful manner and retiring to a silent Contemplation... For a Thelemite, this would be reading the Holy Books, a Muslim, the Quran, and just becoming aware of what you just read and accepting it. And even then, this book should be read in that same manner.... Sides back in for another reading.

EXCELLENT text on a personal journey through Voudon Gnosis
By Adam Grossheider
When I first entered the world of Voudon Gnosis, I was both entranced and overwhelmed by the strangeness of it all. After finding myself oddly drawn to it back and forth for a period of several long months, I also had the pleasure of speaking to +Palamas himself and a few others on this path. One of the first things I noticed was something that I can barely describe with words but as being an 'artistic' attraction. Seeing how these practitioners resonated with this path on such a creative level was inspiring. The beautifully mystical artwork of +Palamas, Sean Woodward, and Kyle Fite was communicating more than just wonderful talents to me, it was a sign of the mediumistic catalyst of the work itself and it spoke of an experiential Gnosis. As a writer, musician, and artist myself with talents that have for the last several years gone into hibernation, suddenly I felt myself with a surge of awakening creativity and a thirst to truly experience a relationship with the world of the Saints, Spirits, and Lwa.

Upon diving into "Syzygy", not only is it helping me understand the M7R coursework and the Voudon Gnostic Workbook, but I found that this path was not out to recruit anyone, it was calling those who had already been there! Suddenly I found myself working with this current on a daily basis and learning so much about myself in many mysitcal ways.

I found myself in luck as +Palamas reveals his grounded background in the various currents of the Western Mystery Tradition and in a solid practical esoteric Christian faith. In this book, the Freemason, Martinist, Thelemite, and Gnostic Christian will note how the author is able to synthesize his explanations through these various paths, and to make it plain that while his own personal approach is not required for the OTOA-LCN, he lets his own practice become a living example of how the path works through YOU as an individual, not the other way around. We are literally becoming who were meant to be, and it is a lifelong return that even as I, a humble beginner, have found much inspiration for. I fully expect this and further gnostic realizations of an esoteric nature to continue and to grow more personal.

The first half of the book gives wonderful advice on how votaries of the Monastery are able to become more receptive and open to powerful occult channels of the spirit world, and effectively becoming more receptive to themselves! In the Western magical traditions, there is a tendency to become prideful and egocentric with the theory that we have tomes of rituals and lists of spirits for us to call upon like we are merely choosing from a spice rack for dinner. +Palamas makes it clear that our choices on the occult path must develop a real and honest relationship, rather than the standoffish mentality of Master and Servant, Magician and Spirit. Cultivating a real mutual relationship opens hidden whispers of gnosis and becomes a realization of our true selves and of our True Wills. Without one wasted word, a greatly succinct effort is made to elaborate on the concept of "living in a constant conversation or dialogue with divinity", as Michael Bertiaux puts it. Training our Wills to become magnetically receptive in this way is an esoteric way of life, not a practice that one chooses to dust off from off the shelf whenever we feel the need for change. This path IS change, it IS transformation, and it IS gnosis. The cyclic nature of purification is a necessity, and these intensely personal trials are direct evidence of a shift in consciousness and a liberation of the energy that comes from finding ourselves.

The second half of the book is dedicated to practice, and it is an excellent complement to the great theory and understanding that is established in previous chapters. His Ritual Act of Oblation is a powerful way to connect with the current and ceremonially establish our intentions. The Breviary, based upon the Catholic Liturgy of the Hours, is a great example of making time itself sacred in our daily lives, to constantly devote oneself and at the same time remind ourselves to keep our awareness open to Divinity. The section on the 16 Saints gives an introduction to the attributes and correspondences between their respectively syncretized Lwa and tell us how to immediately start working with them, and the author fully encourages us not to wait, but to dive in. Finally, the closing chapter on using the Psalms is a great way to add biblical mysticism to the template that is provided in the VGW. We are encouraged to start working immediately, and the ceremonies are not overly complicated in any way. They require minimal setup, but are designed to help us apply the inner changes suggested in the first half of the text.

Personally, when I really dig into a book I often read chapters over many times, and whether or not this is due to a learning deficiency I don't know, but in reading texts of an esoteric and occult nature, in which were are practically drowning in the West, I find myself absorbing different layers of information each time. To me, this is not any sort of obstacle, this is a gift, a chance to sink deeper into the text and experience its ideas and apply them, rather than just reading the words on an intellectual level. For Syzygy, I am now on my second reading of the book and recognizing other aspects that I have been experiencing with practice since my first reading. In the decision to keep a highlighter close by this time, practically the whole damn book is yellow now! I am sure that +Palamas is glad to see fellow students of the Mysteries making good use of his book though. My one and ONLY regret is that I bought the paperback edition that does not feature color renditions of his wonderful artwork, although I may remedy that situation ;)

Syzygy is a book for both the student and the adept, even if one has not been fully introduced to Voudon Gnosis. As this is +Palamas' personal journey, it is more than evident that his passion for the Great Work shines through in his examples as he shares with us his knowledge, it surely is inspirational for us to find the same passion in our own ways. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Mediatations on the Voduon Gnostic Path
By Mr. S. A. Woodward
With SYZYGY Tau Palamas approaches the cosmic pairings of Michael Bertiaux’s known and lesser known works, namely the Voudon Gnostic Workbook (VGW) and the Monastery of the Seven Rays (M7R) through the filter of classical monasticism.

It is a lens that fits with the model of the M7R as a traditional religious community, although as Palamas is keen to point out, “We are dealing with a wide-open celestial sphere, via the terrestrial, that is polymorphic and exquisite in design and which has much to teach us about ourselves and the Universe. We simply must be true to ourselves and trust in our own resources to decide upon what manner of working we may embark. No one can do this for you, though they may offer pointers” (p82)

In adopting the monastic approach to the teachings of the M7R the work is divided into a first part of chapters which address different aspects of the pious lifestyle and ritual and culminates in a practical second half which outlines rituals of Oblation, the application of the Psalms as litany, prayer and conjuration as well as an outline of 16 Saints and their areas of influence.

It is clear in the attention to such diverse areas as Scala Dei, Gyrovagi, Memento Mori and Caritas as well as Syzygy, Good and Bad UFOs and Ojas that Palamas has experienced the balance of worldly and unworldly, of the revelations of gnostic inner spaces provided by contemplation of the M7R and those of the VGW. For anyone seeking direct quotations from the M7R teaching papers, they will not be found here as Palamas prefers instead to quote from the recently republished VGW. In many ways this is an added bonus and the VGW itself can at times appear impenetrable, itself a fortress of the mysteries, yet Palamas exposes the underlying principles in easily understood language, backed by example.

The principle of Syzygy (of pairings) is reflected throughout the work, no less in the juxtaposition of Palamas’ text with his own artwork, many examples of which illustrate the work. The formulation of a gnostic artist is a key indicator in the Voudon Gnostic tradition, of which this work is an exegesis. It is a particular conduit used by the Spirits and Guardians of the tradition both as comunicatiion and testimony. There is a reference to this on page 110, quoting the VGW;

"The gnostic artist is an instrument for divine and angelic activity in what he does, for he contacts those highest levels of consciousness and being which religion designates as the divine and/or the angelic." - Michael Bertiaux (p110)

Whilst this book is subtitled ‘Reflections on the Monastery of the Seven Rays’ it is clear that these themselves are ripples in the rich and deep ontic pool of esoteric exposition created and elucidated by Michael Bertiaux. In the Introduction, is a statement concerning the M7R;

“The Monastery of the Seven Rays exists on multiple planes. it has a physical locale in the home of Michael-Paul Bertiaux in Chicago , IL USA”

As one who has had the privilege of visiting its physical locale, I can vouch for this book being a true reflection of the energies which emanate from there.

Finally, Palamas touches on one of the profoundest mysteries of the M7R when he states “ votaries of the M7R are returning to an unfinished work, to a rough ashlar, to a portion of their very isness that remains undone and MUST be completed now or at some other point in history.” (p70)

With this book Palamas has provided an insight and physical totem which will assist anyone who is returning or desires to understand what makes the Voudon Gnostic path such a vibrant and dynamic experience. I would recommend a relationship with this book as the first of many such fruitful relationships which the gnosis provides.

Review
"This is a relatively small text that manages to cover more than enough material in enough depth to provide students with a solid grounding in argument." - Joanne Addison, University of Colorado

"Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing provides outstanding instruction in analyzing and evaluating evidence in arguments. Once students realize how to identify various types of evidence and the key strategies to analyze and evaluate each type, they write with improved acuity and depth." - John Regan, Boston University, College of General Studies

Refund pending.

The advertised book was for a seventh edition which was what was required for my class. This is what I purchased this from Bargain Quality Books. Instead, I received a fourth edition with a Dewey decimal ID sticker on the spine and a sticker on the back that indicated that it was the property of the Lake Park Academy's library.

Best activity tracker on the market - Updated 6/28/16
By Ryan
I've been using it for almost 2 weeks now, I got lucky and got one really early. So far, I love it. Between weight training, elliptical running, biking (outdoor with ant+ sensors connected) and a huge amount of yard work, I am extremely impressed. Unlike previous wrist based trackers I've had, this one actually tracks movement when I cut the lawn or push a shopping cart. I use the GPS for yard work (turn on the walk activity), and it's really cool to see the movement map when I'm done.

For anyone thinking about this, keep in mind that this is an activity tracker with some smart watch functionality. If you're thinking about this or something along the lines of a Gear S2 or Apple Watch, you are comparing the wrong products. If you want something to count steps, go with a Jawbone or FitBit, no need to spend $250 for a pedometer. This also isn't small. My wrists aren't large, but it looks fine on me and the size isn't an issue. If you wear dress shirts a lot (with sleeves down and buttoned), you might have a bit of an issue. I had to wear a suit last week, and it was tough to get the shirt cuff over the watch. Doing that daily would be a problem for me.

The watch faces are good, fairly limited, but good. Actiface is my favorite, it shows time, steps, battery life, date, sunrise/sunset time, calories burned, distance moved, max steps and cal for the week and it also has a graph showing calories and steps over the last 7 days. Great face to see a bevy of stats at a glance.

This was money well spent for me, I'm very active and this can keep up with everything I do and then some. The apps are limited, but again, this isn't a smart watch, it's a smart tracker for more athletic types of people. I love it, it was worth the 2+ months of waiting. I debated getting the Fenix 3 HR, but I'm not at that level of outdoor activity, so this was a perfect choice for me. The fact that it can go in the shower/pool/ocean without turning into a dead device makes this a no brainer in the price range.

5/16/16 Update:
I found out yesterday that, on a long trip, it will count steps in my car. I didn't have that problem with my wife's car. My UP24 did the same thing, so as with that, I will just take it off in the car.

HR tracking while lifting weights is not perfect, it's basically flipped: When lifting, HR goes down because blood flow is restricted, when I drop the weight, it goes up when normal flow returns. As with all wrist based, it's not perfect. For really detailed HR tracking, a chest strap is the best approach. I'm ok with how this works, but I will be getting a chest strap to get a more exact measure for weight training.

I have seen complaints about the size. Get a tape measure and you can easily see how big it will be on your wrist. Negative reviews based on size make no sense to me, it's clear how big it is. Cut a piece of paper or something to the size stated to see how big it will be on your wrist. It's not small, but it's also not as big as the Fenix 3. GPS, HR, touch screen, battery, all of these things need space for components. If you want something small, you'll need to sacrifice features. It can't be much smaller and still make sense to have a touch screen.

After 3 weeks, I'm totally sold on this still.

Update 6/28: 2 months in, I only wish I had this a year ago when I swimming daily. It's not perfect, but it's as close as it comes compared to others I have used. Stair counting could be better, I go up and down at least a dozen times a day (including basement stairs, maybe 2 dozen) and I rarely hit the 10 flight goal, not sure if that's a software or hardware problem, but that's really the only issue I have with it.

Awesome, with right expectations
By Karry L Blake

I did not order these from Amazon. My wife and I each got a Vivoactive HR, we ordered directly from Garmin. We have now had them for a week and I will update this review if need be. I use mine to track steps, biking and snowboarding next season. The built in altimeter was a big selling point. I have the previous Vivoactive. It does not have an altimeter. So you can use it to track ski/snowboard runs but it uses GPS flat speed and not your actual 3d speed. The new one can now do that. My wife uses hers for running.
I read a few reviews were people had issues with going out of range of their phone and then coming back in range and the watch not automatically re-connecting via Bluetooth to their phone. My wife and I spent some time testing that and we could not reproduce the same results. Our watches re-connected every time we came back in range of our phone.

Initial Setup:
We did not have any issues out of the box or connecting to the Garmin Connect App on our iPhones. Like the instructions state, pair the device directly through the Connect App. We both also used the Garmin Express desktop app during the initial charge to customize what apps and widgets are installed and in what order they appear as you swipe through the interface. I deleted all the apps I wouldn’t use, like indoor biking, rowing, Stand Up Paddle Boarding etc to make the screens easier to navigate. Like any Garmin device it is important to take the time to go through all the settings to tweak and customize it to what you want.

Screen:
Let’s address the elephant in the room. The screen, which seems to be the cause of many of the 1 star reviews. I can understand how this can happen. All the marketing material show the screen bright and very readable. However this screen is designed for battery life and to be read out doors. When in direct light it is super bright and easy to read. However in low light without the backlight on it is hard to read. Straight out of the box the backlight is set to level 3, which is hard to see. My Vivoactive HR came out of the box with the new 2.4 update installed. So I was immediately able to navigate the settings menu to turn the backlight from level 3 to level 6 and it was plenty bright. It does go up to 9 and is VERY bright. My wife’s did not have the update. But during the first sync with her phone the update installed. Once you can adjust the backlight the screen is fine. We did not have any backlight bleed like some have mentioned. I think many of other reviewer’s issues are just their expectations were not met. This watch is purpose built to be an activity tracker with some Smartwatch functions built in. It isn’t an Apple Watch, but then again it has standalone GPS, altimeter, compass, heart rate and other sensors built in, and does not have to be charged every night.

Step and Activity Tracking:
Step tracking has been flawless for both of us. It is accurate, including counting floors. I tested in my house going from the first floor to the second floor and it seems to track just fine. Sometimes there was a delay between showing the floor counted, but it would show up. As for activity tracking, it has been outstanding. It is easy to start, stop and view data while tracking the activity. It also uploads to the Garmin Connect really fast. I can say the sync / upload on this Vivoactive is faster than the first gen. I have used it to track mountain biking and walking so far. My wife has used it to track running with no issues.

Heart Rate:
Here I feel is another elephant, sitting in the room eating peanuts. Let’s remember that this is optical HR. It shines a light on your wrist. It isn’t going to be 100% accurate. There are many factors. Placement, hair on your arm, heck even a mole where your band sits could cause issues. It isn’t going to work for strength training, weightlifting etc. My personal experience has been it is mostly accurate while not exercising. There were a few times where I could tell it wasn’t right, like saying my HR was at 85 when sitting. My RHR is about 58. But it only lasted for a min or too, and knowing what my HR should be I could call it what it was, an outlier. I wasn’t too worried about it. During activity tracking I had no issue and it seemed to stay accurate the whole time while on my mountain bike. It was great to be able see the correlation between steep technical climbs and the increase in my HR. There was a point on my ride where HR didn’t work so well, but that is because the watch moved a bit. That was my fault, I didn’t tighten it enough.

Look / Fit / Comfort:
I love the look of this one. My old Vivoactive looked clunky, unsophisticated and would not fit in well with business attire. The new one looks fine from the morning jog, to the afternoon meeting with clients. The new band is also an improvement. This one is more comfortable than the old one for sure. I can wear it all day just fine.

Battery Life:
The battery lasted 6 days, with 3 GPS tracked activities. I have now turned off the heart rate monitor to save battery life. I don’t really care about 24 hour HR monitoring. I turn it on when I am going to track an activity, and turn it off after. That will probably improve battery life even more.

Final thoughts
My wife and I love this watch and I gave it 5 stars. If I had to pick a flaw it would be that it has the same amount of screen real-estate as the old one but with more resolution and flipped into landscape. From the pictures I thought the screen would be bigger than the previous generation. I do like the new orientation and higher resolution. I would recommend this to anyone who lives an active lifestyle.

All-around activity tracker with golf features and good battery life? YES
By Jeff R.
I want to start this off by saying that this is the first fitness tracker I have owned. I would consider myself an athlete and have been one for basically my entire life. The sports I've played have changed over the years, but I've always been pretty active. I looked at other devices in the past like Fitbit, Polar, Nike, and even other Garmin devices, and nothing was appealing enough for me to finally buy into the whole activity tracking craze. A few months back, a friend showed me his Garmin Vivosmart HR during a volleyball tournament and showed me everything you can do with the Garmin Connect app. I play a lot of volleyball, so I was also a little concerned about wearing something on my wrist while playing since you pass with your arms, but he claimed that he didn't really notice it while playing. The Garmin ecosystem seemed pretty cool, so I decided to jump on Amazon and search for something for myself.

I landed on the Vivoactive HR. Unfortunately, this was in March and it hadn't been released yet. Because of this, I wasn't able to find many hands on reviews. But the feature set had everything I was looking for. The main features I was looking for were activity tracking, sleep tracking, wrist-based heart rate sensor, built-in GPS, and decent battery life. The golf features and touchscreen were added bonuses. I golf a couple times a month during the warmer months of the year, and having a rangefinder on my wrist seemed pretty convenient. So I ordered it way back in March, but I didn't receive it until May 2. However, shortly after receiving mine, I noticed that the screen seemed to be crooked. It was like the display (under the glass) was turned slightly counterclockwise. I ended up calling Garmin directly and arranging for a replacement to be sent out. They sent one while allowing me to keep my current Vivoactive HR which I would send back when receiving the new one. After receiving the new one, I saw that the screen was mounted correctly. I will note that the device itself seemed to function normally otherwise except for one small problem which I will note later when talking about golf.

APPS AND FEATURES:

Heart Rate Monitoring: So I've had this thing for about 3 weeks now. I feel like for the price point it is at, it is truly awesome. Heart rate monitoring seems to be pretty accurate. I am not the type of person to care about perfectly exact HR numbers, but I've measured my pulse by feel and it seems to be pretty close. It does seem like doing things (like weightlifting) where you are tensing up your forearm does seem to mess with the HR sensor a bit, but it's not bad enough for me to really complain about.

Step Counter: The step counter appears to be fairly accurate. I am not too concerned about it being perfect. I just use it to get an idea of how much I've actually been on my feet any given day. I have noticed that it doesn't seem to count as many steps as I think it would when I am mowing the lawn with a push mower. Not a huge deal but a little disappointing. Otherwise it seems to keep track of my step count pretty well.

Sleep Tracking: Sleep tracking is neat. In my experience, the Vivoactive HR does a solid job of figuring out when I fall asleep and when I wake up. I am a little bit skeptical about the periods of "light sleep" and "deep sleep" that it records in the Garmin Connect app. Also, it doesn't always seem to see when I wake up during the night. I know that I woke up to go to the bathroom the other night and it didn't seem to notice the movement at all. You'd think if it saw steps in the middle of the night, it would assume you are awake. I will say that it has picked up other times that I've simply woke up in bed and fallen back asleep, but it doesn't seem to be perfect in this regard. Nonetheless, I am happy that it seems to pick up on when I'm actually falling asleep and waking up every night.

Activity Tracking: The only activities I've played with so far are walking, running, and a custom activity that I created for volleyball. I only use the GPS for walking and running, and it has been very accurate. Also, it has never taken more than a few seconds to get a good GPS lock. It's just nice to have GPS because I'd rather have my distance/pace calculated based on something accurate like GPS as opposed to the activity tracker counting your steps and estimating your stride distance. It's also really nice not having to take my phone with me to use GPS.

Golf features: As I said before the golf features were an added bonus. I downloaded some local courses and have used the golf app a few times now. The yardages have been accurate for the three courses that I have played. The app itself will show you distance to the hole when the pin is in front, middle, or back of the green. It will show you yardages to doglegs and layups. You can also measure the distance of your shots if you are into that kind of thing. You can even see (albeit primitive) the layout of the green on one of the screens. I did run into one problem with the golf app. On the layup screen, numbers would occasionally go "missing". There was a par 5 where I know it was about 150 yards to layup to 100 yards out, and the screen would display 50 instead of 150. This seemed to happen fairly often, and since I was familiar with the courses I was playing, it wasn't a big deal. But I called Garmin about it anyway, and they were actually able to reproduce it. They said that a software update should fix it. A new software version came out just the other day, so I will try it again this weekend and report back if it is fixed.

THE OTHER STUFF:

Battery life: For something that has a decent sized display and 24/7 HR monitoring, I think the Vivoactive HR has great battery life. Obviously if you are a heavy GPS user, the battery will drain much faster than normal. I charged to 100% just over 5 days ago, and none of the workouts I've done in the last 5 days have required GPS. I'm currently sitting at 50%. I guess if you go off this, you should get about 10 days of battery without GPS usage. During my last 25-minute run with GPS on, the battery level dropped about 2-3% which didn't seem unreasonable. Golf appears to suck the most out of the battery since GPS is turned on for a few hours at a time. During a normal 18-hole round (a little over 4 hours) with GPS on the whole time, the battery percentage dropped by about 20%. I know the Vivoactive HR is rated for about 8 days without GPS and 13 hours with GPS on. So the battery actually appears to perform better than what it is rated for.

Touchscreen: I've seen the touchscreen readability as a topic of debate on some other websites. It is actually more readable in direct sunlight than in any other circumstances. It is very readable with normal indoor lighting. It is impossible to read in the dark unless you have the backlight on. In most situations, I don't really feel like I need the backlight. But it does its job when it is needed. The screen isn't the highest resolution thing you'll ever seen, but it still looks nice. The touchscreen is responsive and accurately responds to touches, and I feel like it has actually gotten more responsive and fluid with the latest update.

Comfort, size, and looks: I have never worn watches. I was a little worried about having something on my wrist all day, every day...especially while sleeping and playing volleyball. After wearing the Vivoactive HR for a few days, I don't really even notice it anymore. I find it to be very comfortable. I can see how it might be too large for some people who are accustomed to wearing smaller activity trackers. But I think it's the price you pay for something that has a decent sized touchscreen with HR monitoring built in. I am wearing the version with the regular band (not XL), and I would say I have slightly smaller than average wrists for a guy. I wear it fairly tight and still have 9 notches to work with on the band. As far as looks go...you're not going to trick anyone into thinking it's some kind of luxury watch. It looks like an activity tracker, but I actually prefer the design over the design of the original Vivoactive. It still looks pretty sleek, and I have had a lot of people ask me about it. Also, I work in IT, so no one really cares if I'm wearing something real fancy looking. If you want to spruce things up a little bit, there are quite a few downloadable watch faces available, and the band can also be switched out.

Durability: This one is still up in the air. The Vivoactive HR is mostly plastic, but to me, it doesn't feel cheap. The two buttons underneath the screen feel pretty solid. I did buy a screen protector for the glass, but I haven't put it on yet. I'm debating whether or not I actually need to put it on. I have always taken care of my electronics, but I don't take most of my electronics running or play a volleyball tournament with them attached to my wrist. It feels like it will hold up, but I don't think I will truly have an idea for at least a few months.

Other stuff: The smart notifications feature works well. I am able to pick and choose what notifications I want relayed from my cell phone. You can't really do a whole lot with the notifications other than view them, but I have found that I actually look at my phone a lot less now because of this. The notifications turn off during your designated sleeping schedule, so they won't annoy you when you're lying in bed. However, the alarm feature has a strong enough vibration to wake me up every morning. This is nice because I no longer need to blare audio from the alarm on my cell phone and wake up my wife at the same time. Also, there are a decent amount of watch faces/apps/widgets available. So far I've only touched the watch faces, but it is nice that quite a bit can be customized to fit your needs.

Overall, I'm very happy with the Vivoactive HR. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the bugs in the golf app. I'm taking it out to the golf course a couple times this weekend, so I'll see if the update fixed the problem. If so, I may come back and re-rate it as 5 stars. And if I think of anything else I want to add in, I will do so.

Conceptual Data Modeling and Database Design: A Fully Algorithmic Approach, Volume 1: The Shortest Advisable Path, by Christian Mancas

This new book aims to provide both beginners and experts with a completely algorithmic approach to data analysis and conceptual modeling, database design, implementation, and tuning, starting from vague and incomplete customer requests and ending with IBM DB/2, Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL Server, or Access based software applications. A rich panoply of solutions to actual useful data sub-universes (e.g. business, university, public and home library, geography, history, etc.) is provided, constituting a powerful library of examples.

Four data models are presented and used: the graphical Entity-Relationship, the mathematical EMDM, the physical Relational, and the logical deterministic deductive Datalog ones. For each one of them, best practice rules, algorithms, and the theory beneath are clearly separated. Four case studies, from a simple public library example, to a complex geographical study are fully presented, on all needed levels.

Several dozens of real-life exercises are proposed, out of which at least one per chapter is completely solved. Both major historical and up-to-date references are provided for each of the four data models considered.

The book provides a library of useful solutions to real-life problems and provides valuable knowledge on data analysis and modeling, database design, implementation, and fine tuning.

Review

"What Christian Mancas wanted to do is to write the best possible book on real, pragmatic database design available, bar none. He suceeded. . . This book will find its way into the literature on database design and development. It has a good number of ideas that must be considered in any design task. It uses a sample-based approach and is thus easy to understand. It supports digestion due to nice exercises. And, finally it discusses in details also the result of a design in different DBMS languages. So, a reader can be sure that the book guides to the right track."

―Bernhard Thalheim, Department of Computer Science, Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel, Germany (from the Foreword)

"Covers the classical data management topics that any computer professional should master. . . . This volume is a gentle yet rigorous and extensive introduction to the main topics in data management, with concrete examples on several popular database systems. There are lots of detailed examples, and each concept is covered in detail, and from several perspectives, using alternative definitions or notations where needed. The book ensures that no reader is left behind, and all potential questions are answered. . . . Best suited for the practitioner who wants to achieve a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts in data management. . . . This volume is an important first step in understanding the complexities of data today."

―Dan Suciu, Professor, University of Washington, Seattle, USA (from the Foreword)

"One of the biggest problems in nowadays applications is the management of data. Analyzing and structuring large amounts of data relies on understanding and being able to describe its properties and constraints. Professor Christian Mancas's exceptionally well-documented work, A Conceptual Data Modeling and Database Design, gives the basic insights of the database models and their importance as a foundation for the complex applications. This book guides the reader throughout real-life scenarios, providing essential software engineering advice. Indeed, by addressing some of the problems people usually encounter when designing a database, Professor Mancas pedagogically connects the end user's requirements to the notions of entities and relations between them. Meanwhile, the mathematical analysis and proofs sustain the theoretical background of the statements and provide a complete view of the possible algorithmic optimizations. The first volume, A Fully Algorithmic Approach: The Shortest Advisable Path, represents an important contribution in the learning process as it advocates best practice rules in database designs with clear explanations and practical exercises.

"This first volume mainly presents Professor Mancas's point of view of the database design state of the art (enriched with his main original contributions to the E-RDM and RDM). I am looking forward for the second volume of this book that will mainly present his most important contribution to the conceptual data modeling and database design: his (Elementary) Mathematical Data Model [(E)MDM], as well as MatBase, his KDBMS prototype based on both (E)MDM, E-RDM, RDM, and Datalog."
―Andra Hugo, PhD, University of Bordeaux, France

"Modern scientific and business challenges, the proliferation of personal computers and intelligent gadgets, the Internet and industries' large amounts of data, all fuel a huge need of database management systems. The book by C. Mancas is an excellent introduction to pragmatic database design and development. Presented in a gentle manner, with many examples, the book is suited to a large category of readers, from computer science and engineering students to the practitioners of the domain."
―Cristian S. Calude, Chair Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of Auckland, New Zealand
