DON'T BE FOOLED!

I was skeptical about purchasing this product because of the reviews that were less than glowing. After reading the first chapter, however, I felt as if I stumbled across a gold mine. As a first generation law student who does not have any relatives in a white collar profession, attends a school not in the T-15, and is not in the top 10-15% of the class, I started to panic after my 1st semester. My career services center SUCKS, thus, I felt as if I was hopelessly wading through the muddy waters of finding a job. This book is a little overly cheerful and for individuals who are not willing to work hard to implement the numerous strategies and take heed to the model real life examples of success stories, then this book will not work for you. But for individuals who are tired and overwhelmed with the nebulous job search and desire clear cut practical strategies that THEY ARE WILLING TO WORK THEIR BUTTS OFF TO TRY, then BUY this book. I got a firm job (PAID) after my 1L year and I have options lined up for the 2nd summer (And I have not even begun my 2nd year of school yet!) I think this book's helpfulness is directly proportional to when you purchase and how you use it. So...3Ls, I'm not saying it's too late but get a move on! And for 1Ls, 2Ls, you NEED this book. Unless of course you are set on the misconception that a BIG Law firm job will fall into your lap.

This book helped me land a job!

I highly recommend this book for new attorneys looking for a job. Soon after I graduated, the legal market plummeted. I earned high grades in law school and completed several internships. Despite all of this, I was unable to compete with other experienced job applicants. Two years after graduation, I began to get frantic about my prospects. Walton's suggestions absolutely work! I volunteered and became active in my local and state bar associations. I attended several CLEs where I met attorneys. At one CLE, I reconnected with a supervisor from my internship. She later provided me with a professional reference. I worked closely with my school's career services office to prepare for interviews and refine my resume. I used Walton's suggestions to meet attorneys in my geographic area. I even hand delivered my resume to firms on two occasions. This tactic landed me an interview at one of the firms. I wish I had not hesitated to purchase this book last year because once I began actively employing her strategies, I saw immediate results. One month and three interviews later, I am employed as an attorney. This book is worth every dime!

I SO needed this before going to law school. Unfortunately, I did not buy it until AFTER 2L Fall OCI when I wound up having zero offers. Admittedly, I am in the top 25% of my class. So, some of these tactics might work better for me than if I was in the bottom half of my class. My errors in Fall OCI were largely tactical - I attend a top 14 law school in a state other than the state I want to practice in and did not realize that you needed to contact the large firms in that state BEFORE or DURING Fall OCI. Afterward it's too late. (Admittedly, this makes me seem a bit dimwitted) Either way, I was left with the same problem this book addresses: all the jobs I want (big firm jobs) are taken, and I need a route OTHER than Fall OCI to landing those jobs. I'm just beginning this process, so I cannot attest to the efficacy of Kimm's suggestions. However, the suggestions seem sound, and I am hopeful that one of them will pay off. I would recommend this book to anyone who now, or someday, wants a legal job.

Originally this book was going to be full length, but as I started writing and plotting events to create a full novel, something felt wrong. I was creating drama and circumstances that didn't feel true to myself, the story, or the characters and I didn't want that. I didn't want to put out a story with forced conflict just because I said it would be full length. So after much soul searching, I decided to do what in my heart I felt was right and end Charlie and Jhett's story the way it was always supposed to be.�That is what you get in�Promise Me Forever. You find out what happens after�Promise Me This�ends and I can tell you, writing it this way has been so much fun. It feels good to see them come to a bittersweet end and I sincerely hope when you read it, you feel the same way.�

About the Author
Sarah Ashley Jones was raised in San Diego, California, but currently wrangles her husband and three dogs in Clarksville, Tennessee. When she’s not writing she works in a pottery studio and comes home covered in paint on a daily basis. She has a slightly unhealthy obsession with cupcakes and chapstick. She is an eternal optimist and can often be found dancing and singing to music at any given time. It’s rare to see her not smiling or laughing, but if you do, just bring her a cupcake and it will cheer her up. Her huge imagination was always in overdrive as a child and now she is beyond excited to put it to good use as an adult. She plans to write as long as she has stories that need to be told.

Just Perfect

When I was approached to read Promise Me This last July, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had no idea what kind of impact the book would make on me - that it would be a book that followed me around and popped into my head from time to time. It is one that I remember in sharp details - something that doesn't always happen when you read over 260 books in one year. In all this time, this book and Colleen Hoover's are two that I recommend to someone who wants to read new adult. So, I've been chomping at the bit to get this second installment in my hand.

I've been fortunate enough to get to know the author some over the past year and knew how much she thought through the decision to make this book a novella rather than a full length. And I have to give her credit, because honestly, it was just perfect. Could I have used MORE Charlie & Jhett in my life? Sure! But, with this, I got what I needed and Charlie and Jhett got to live out their story the way it needed to be lived.

This book, in so many ways, is a love letter to the reader. It reminds me SO much of Colleen Hoover's This Girl. The book was set in the present timeline, with flashbacks that filled in the gaps from where we left off. I have to admit I knew what was happening from the very first page, but when it was actually confirmed, I squeaked a little. You aren't going to see a lot of drama and tension play out -- there are things the characters needed to work through, but ultimately this is about Charlie and Jhett finding their places in the world with each other. And finding the happily ever after they truly deserved.

Now knowing Sarah, I have to say that Charlie seems to have even more life than she did when I read the first book. I see the heart and personality that was poured into her, and she in every way is on of the most dynamic characters. Her spunk and quips, along with her love for Jhett just made me wish she was real so I could hug her.

I do wish that some of the story lines were longer, more filled in (I was NOT expecting one thing to happen, and found my heart beating a little heavier when it did), but it was all executed with precision. The want is more personal fangirling, than something that was necessary to fully tell the story.

Don't let the length of the story dissuade you, this is every bit worth the money to pick up. In fact, I'll probably buy the book just so I can have a copy of my very own.

Cute way to end the story!

First Thoughts:

This is the follow-up story for Promise Me This. Due to unforeseen circumstances instead of doing a full novel Sarah decided to write a Novella to give closure to the story and the characters. Although a little disappointed that we don’t get a full length novel full of how awesome Jhett and Charlie are, I think this was a fantastic way to end the story because you really do get full closure.

The Story:

We are taken back into the lives of Jhett and Charlie, at the end of Promise Me This everything was in like a tailspin. My heart hurt for everyone and I was worried about how they would push through what happened. Promise Me Forever takes us on an emotional journey of love, acceptance, grief, forgiveness, and moving on. It was a little confusing at times jumping back and forth between the past and the present, but once I got the hang of it, it was totally a necessary thing to do. We get to see so much more of what happened during Promise Me This, answers to questions that I didn’t even know I had. And of course I love the characters!

Final Thoughts:

This was a great finish to the story, I was left with no questions, and everything was neatly tied up and handed to me in a bow. I will definitely miss Jhett and Charlie, and although I was a little disappointed with the length of the book to begin with, I really don’t think it needed to be any longer. If it was longer I think it would have just been a lot of filler and stuff that we don’t really need. I am not generally a fan of novellas, but this one was so well written that I didn’t even remember it was one until I realized it only took a few hours to read it. Oh! And that ending, I absolutely LOVED it! It was the sweetest cutest thing EVER!

Wonderful closure to the open-ended Promise Me This

After losing her brother, discovering far more about his life than she ever imagined, falling in love with a gorgeous guitarist who kept too many secrets, and having it all come crashing down again, Charlie’s coming apart at the seams. But despite all that’s been lost, Jhett still holds her heart, and while she may be an emotional mess, she can’t bring herself to take that final step away from him.

Jhett’s torn apart as well, but while Charlie might push him away, he’s not willing to let go completely, not when they need each other to get through, to move forward, and to finally find their happily ever after. The past never truly fades away, but love has a way of making it bearable.

The Verdict...
OMG, the reunion! I don’t know if I’ve ever read one that was described so perfectly that it not only played out like a movie in my mind, but I could practically feel every emotion and movement.

Promise Me Forever is in many ways unlike the first book, filled with emotional turbulence and raw reactions, but somehow it fits perfectly. It’s a short read (which is great, since more would have been too much), so it’s nearly impossible to describe without giving everything away, but it’s wonderful closure to the open-ended Promise Me This, with Jhett becoming even more lovable (if that’s even possible!), and Charlie working through everything that’s happened.

If I hadn’t believed in their relationship at the end of the first book, this one would certainly have convinced me.

Just right for the coffee table

I was tempted by the online excerpt from the book, so you can imagine my disappointment that what i had read was pretty much it - no depth, no probing, no analysis. If you wish that Parade magazine had a type column then this is your dream come true. Peppy short bio-interviews drawing a few pithy comments and then on to a spashy but mostly pointless sprinkle of images.

Not a serious read or look. Save your money.

Interesting Interviews, but Not Worth Owning

The book consists of 7-10 interviews with some prominent typeface designers, a few pages of examples for each, and a tutorial for creating your own typefaces.

The interviews are of satisfying length, but don't probe too deeply into their subjects. Nevertheless I found them to be interesting and they made me think about typography in different ways. The content is varied, some dealing with design theory and some with technique.

The examples are sporadic; for some designers, I wanted to see more, especially when there would be some "revolutionary" font described in the text that wasn't shown. For the most part it is good stuff, however, including multiple revisions of some fonts on their way to the finished product and posters showing the fonts in context.

The tutorial would be better renamed "A Few Things to Consider Before Designing a Typeface." It is merely a cursory glance at the process, offering very little guidance.

Overall, this would be a good book to check out from a library (you could easily read it in a day) but there would be little point in owning it.

Good Insight

This isn't a "How you can do it" book, but rather a "How they do it" book, or perhaps even more precisely, "Why they do it".

This book profiles 12 contemporary type designers and shows on a personal level, why each typographer chose to do what he/she does and how they approach their work. Earls does what few other have in giving us personal insight (though be it brief) into the lives, minds and personal influences of well-known, and not-so-well-known, contemporary typographers--like Zuzanna Licko, Matthew Carter and Johnathan Hoefler.

A few people missing that I would like to have seen included are: Neville Brody, Sumner Stone, Elliot Earls and the group at House Industries.

If you're interested in learning something behind the surface of today's typography design, this book does have something to offer with a decent selection of typographers and (very brief) samples of their work.
