Loaded with information - something new for everyone

I have to say at the beginning that it's nearly impossible to learn jazz from a book - we really need to hear and be inspired by other musicians, and perhaps for that reason I've never been able to find a 'how to' book that leads a student through all the learning that is necessary to become a proficient jazz musician.

But whether you're a beginner or advanced jazz student, I think you'll find something valuable in this book, to help guide and enrich your playing. The author takes a unique approach to jazz harmony, and has a keen interest in the complexity of sound that can be derived from chord extensions (characteristic extensions using the 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths), which he groups together in what he calls 'Sound Chords'. There is also extensive attention given to improvisatory techniques, and the various scales that are part of the jazz vocabulary.

I have studied jazz in a two year full-time program, and there is much in this book that is new to me. It is a book that has to be taken in small pieces, but it will continually challenge even experienced players to broaden their vocabulary.

I would recommend An Approach to Jazz Piano to any jazz student as a "must have' on your book shelf. I have referred to this very thorough and inclusive book many times over the years. One of the best piano instruction books out there.

Amazing book about jazz a must have

I have already quite some books about jazz but this one is a great addition. A must have for everybody who wants to learn to play jazz.
There is lots of info and examples here which keep you busy for quite some years.

Coyote Blue will leave you "howling" for more Moore!

Christopher Moore's novels have an underlying theme to them. They are vehicles that poke fun at various "legends" of the paranormal-vampires (Bloodsucking Fiends), Godzilla (Lust Lizzard) and so on-while concomitantly poking fun at the "California Lifestyle" of type-a personalities espousing New Age psychobabble.
In Coyote Blue the legendary figure being skewered is Trickster, an ancient Native American god know generally for bollixing up the works in whatever situation he inserts himself. The "works" targeted by Trickster here is the life of Sam Hunter, the Southern California makeover of the former reservation baby known as Samson Hunts Alone of the Crow reservation in Montana.
The plot involves Sam's involvement/Tricksters interference with Calliope, a classic, comic version of the hippie child of hippie syndrome so common in LA, the setting for this farcical tale.
The book continues in the vein of Moore's works in general--looping, fantastic flights of fancy, complex yet entertaining plots, and frequent wise guy humor that leaves the reader laughing out loud.
This book differs from his other efforts only in that the story line is more controlled and more thoroughly constructed than is usual. It gives the book the feel of an actual, complete novel in the traditional sense.
However, one does not read Moore to experience novelistic integrity-one reads Moore to laugh one's head off. This novel, like all his others, scores a bull's-eye on that score.
If what you are looking for is a lot of laughs and a rollicking good time, Moore is your guy and this book will satisfy those cravings in droves.

Self help is great, but sometimes we need Coyote.

Before I encountered this book, I thought I already knew all about Coyote, the trickster god of the Native Americans. He's the one who sticks out his foot and trips you once you've hit your stride. He's the one who turns up the heat in your comfort zone until he blasts you out. Moore puts a spin on him, however, that gave me a lot of fresh material to think about. There is something in this book that will appeal to everyone--satire, humor galore, love of all sorts, Las Vegas, bikers, a traveling miracle salesman, a Crow shaman who wonders himself if his visions are in fact now actually the D.T.'s--and last but not least, Sam Hunter (nee Samson Hunts Alone)who thought he'd already found himself until Coyote came along. In a rut? Read this book. You'll find yourself looking forward to having your world turned upside down.

Moore enthusiasts will enjoy this early novel.

If you are already a fan and need a Moore "fix," this novel will keep you thoroughly occupied with its wacky charm, its light-hearted approach to cosmic issues, and its skewed, but respectful, treatment of Native American life and traditions. Coming after Practical Demonkeeping, his debut novel, it has many of the elements for which Moore has become so (justly) popular with his later novels, though its plot and characters are not as fully developed, and the book is not as outrageous or crazily funny as those.

Sam Hunter, the main character, is a 35-year-old California insurance salesman, a Crow Indian whose real name is Sam Hunts Alone. Having attacked a policeman as a teen, Sam became a fugitive from the Crow Agency, and now, twenty years later, leads a totally predictable, boring life--that is, until Old Man Coyote (the trickster), Sam's spiritual helper, arrives, bringing "chaos--the new order in his life."

A beautiful woman, her biker-druggie-ex-lover, and an assortment of wackos, stir up the action, as Sam tries to figure out who he really is and, with Coyote's "help," learn what he is capable of. Lots of wild action and some potentially hilarious scenes are reined in, a bit, by Moore's focus on Sam's Indian traditions and why they are, or should be, important to him, a subject serious enough to curtail the uninhibited flights of craziness that we now expect from Moore. This is fun, but it's a somewhat more thoughtful novel, overall, than the outrageous, campy stories for which Moore is now famous. Mary Whipple

A Mixed Bag

Make no mistake --- Practical Justice has a message that a lot of Westerners, especially Christians, should hear. Those who don't want to hear it may not like this book. Those who don't need to hear it, like me, agree with the message but find it rather repetitive. I get the impression that Blue's next book will be better.

Balanced Yet Prophetic

Another home run in the new series of Likewise books from InterVarsity Press, Practical Justice introduces a balanced yet profoundly prophetic voice into the discussion of the role of the church and the role of the Christian to justice issues.

Kevin Blue, director of the Los Angeles Urban Project with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, states in the first chapter, "No one who encountered Jesus was able to just ignore him. All went away disturbed." Reading this book disturbed me to the point of actually pondering for a few short moments if I needed to stop being a pastor and go back to working on Capitol Hill in order to really advance the Kingdom of God in the world around me. Kevin speaks from lots of personal experience and years of thinking through these issues, and I find his voice to be a refreshing addition to the mix of personalities involved in these discussions. I especially like the three chapters that explored the idiom, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." Kevin demonstrates that both are necessary and gives practical advice for how individuals can participate in both steps of that process. More importantly, he includes a third vital component-- fixing the pond-- to address larger systems and structures that must be changed in order to make a more complete and permanent impact.

While Kevin seemed to slip in and out of teaching, encouraging, and preaching, in general, I enjoyed his tone and easy to read writing style. I feel like I know a bit about his heart and personality after reading this book. The chapter on race and class seems awkward in its placement in the book. And his advice that Christians should have no political leanings seems impractical and impossible for those of us in DC who worked (or a currently working) within places in government that have the power to fix the pond.

With the exception of those two minor things, I really enjoyed this book. Kevin is balanced in his approach and yet prophetic in his call to make a change in our generation. The practical steps he offers seem valuable to anyone at any point on their journey into understanding and working within justice and compassion issues. I also appreciate the value he places on making changes in our culture within the context of community and the chapter on not becoming what you hate.

Practical Justice propelled my thinking on this topic forward, and it gave me a new outreach idea for the community of groups that I lead. It would be a great book for a small group.

I enjoyed the book a lot. As a freshman in college I started getting interested in this new Jesus that wants you to do stuff with your faith. This book was a great intro into the world of social justice. I found the suggestions offered throughout somewhat helpful, and at least a little challenging to me. There are lots of good quotes and ideas to be had, and I appreciate avoiding mere commentary and giving concrete ideas for directions to head.

The Ga-Dangmes are Hebrews

Myself being a researcher regarding the Lost Tribes of Israel and producing works that connect the Igbo people of Nigeria to the Lost Tribe of Gad through Gad's sons Eri, Areli and Arodi I was very intrigued to come across this author and this work where he claims that the Ga-Dangmes of Ghana are also of Gad and Dan. Much of his work confirms and sheds more light of my own research. I personally contacted the author and to my surprise he believes that the Ga people are mostly from Gad's son Eri! This means the Ga and the Igbo are related and the author conformed that the Ga people passed through Igboland on their way to settle in Ghana and stayed with their Igbo brethren for a short period of time. This book is an invaluable resource for any who is interested in African and or Black History as well as those interested in the African connection to the Jewish and Hebrew people of Israel. The evidence is solid and most compelling. The work well written for the laymen as well as the scholar. Kindle Table of contents is incorrect - do not recommend this format, if you are going to buy it, buy the hardcover version

The table of contents of the Kindle version of Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation is not correct. Chapters 1 and 2 (biggest parts of the book) instead of showing the names of the different syndromes, only show the word "anomalies". Since this is an ebook supposed to be consulted on the clinical wards when you want to search for a specific syndrome, this wrong table of contents makes it almost impossible of benign useful. I hope amazon/kindle team will correct this mistake on this ebook version table of contents and send an upgrade of it for the buyers.

Even after asking for a correction, the updated version of Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation for Kindle does not satisfy you with the table of contents and I guess other users will fell the same as I do. So, I do not recommend you to buy it, for these reasons:

1. It does not reflect the table of contents of the paper book version - what I think, only for that reason, should not be released like this;

2. You are able just to see the sub-chapters (A, B, C, D...) BUT the most important contents of a table of contents of a book like that should be the specific syndromes: like inside sub-chapter A you should specify the syndromes: Down Syndrome, Trisomy 18 syndrome, etc... AS it is in the paper version of the book, that's the main reason why this book is so good for a clinical consultation and it still not possible to use it in a good way with the Kindle version.

So, my request would be (it's a very simple and plausible one) is that the Kindle table of contents of Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation have the SAME content layout of the paper book version. Up to that, I do not recommend you to buy the kindle version.

It's a good book, not only for students but for the medical specialist. It's a quick reference for syndromes and malformations, I specially like the new chapter of microdeletions and microduplications. Genomic rearrengements are becoming an important part of medical genetics.
