world class, NY chessplayer, Reshevsky rival,quit in his 20's, gave up world title chance due to Soviet cheating

Yes, before Fischer, Reuben Fine in 1948 gave up chess claiming Soviet match fixing (more truthful he had to make a living --even Reshevsky worked full-time as a CPA). In the 1930's Fine left NY for the European chess circut and was reckoned to be world number 1 or 2 in 1940. His book is a pleasure to read; 50 annotated games against world class GM's and solid masters. The notes are easy to follow (except they are in descriptive). Every game starts with a well written description of the opponent/the tournament/life on the chess circut/background stuff. Game notes are adequate, in the style of the era.

Fine was considered to be a technician - skilled at highly accurate play, a good eye for opponents weaknesses an efficient ability to hold a long-term positional intiative, adept at king attacks, an endgame specialist (he wrote Basic Chess Endings - the all-time endgame encyclopedic classic over one summer!) knowledgable openings (he wrote Modern Chess Openings over another summer!!) and a good calculater of variations. Given the chance (meaning no WWII) he might have become world champion. My only complaint about this book is that it was written 10 years after his retirement and the notes to this book do not have the depth found in Great Moments in Modern Chess (his best book - where he really gets into detail how players think during the game, opening theory, deep analysis from 1848).

Lessons from My Games is one of the best chess biographies, the game collection is good (excellent price) and a good study book for learning technique if you are 1600 or above.

They played chess before 1985!

This collection of 50 of Reuben Fine's games was among the earliest ones that I read. It is also among the few titles that I have read from cover to cover.
For those who don't know, Fine was one of the world's best in his day and a serious championship contender. His record includes a tie for 3rd at Nottingham 1936 and for first at Avro 1938. He has wins against many of the greats.
Fine's annotations are the type that I prefer; no long paragraphs of dense variations. Instead, he nicely mixes moves and text to illustrate his points. As well, each game is introduced by a short anecdote or a description of the circumstances. It adds a human touch missing from many other best game collections.
Along with battles featuring his American contemparies, Fine also shows his talents versus the likes of Alekhine, Capablance, Flohr, Botvinnik and Lasker.
I would heartily recommend this book for players rated from 1200 to 2000.

Fine is Fine

Fine was, before Bobby Fischer, perhaps the strongest American player of the twentieth century. The only caveat to this claim is the strength of Samuel Reshevsky, the boy wunderkind. Fine's games are solid, well explained, and interesting to play over. Though theory has advanced, as it should, one does well to work through this man's corpus here. Well worth the work and an educational read.

This time his subject is an African-American family freed from slavery in 1832. After settling on untamed land along the Wabash River in Indiana, Papa returns frequently to the Tennessee plantation to guide other loved ones north. (It is unclear here whether he is guiding them as a conductor on the Underground Railroad or if they, too, have been freed.) Eventually, his bustling settlement warrants railroad tracks and a name (in actuality, Lyles Station, not "Freedom"). Told from the point of view of James, who is seven when the story begins, the narrative is brief but full of memorable images: "Papa called Lettie a short drink of water, because she was little and wriggly, and he called me a long gulp of air, because I was tall and full of talk." Allen's scenes, in muted earth tones and foggy blues, are close-up cameos, his pastel edges fading into the white page?an effective technique, suggesting a sequence of rising and falling memories. Some of the "recollections" give way to full, double-page, colored-pencil illustrations, making this a successful choice for groups despite the subtle hues. While much is available on the Underground Railroad for the picture-book audience, parallels to the "Little House" experience for African Americans are relatively scarce. Ages 5-8. After being freed from slavery in 1832, seven-year-old James Starman, his sister, and their parents walk from Tennessee to Indiana, where they decide to settle. Papa plants crops and builds a cabin; Mama sews clothes and teaches her children to read and write; and, whenever he can, Papa returns to Tennessee, transporting other friends and relatives to safety in the North. As the years go by, an entire town of African Americans develops, which the residents name Freedom. Allen's illustrations, rendered in blue pastels with accents of brown, red, and gold, suit the upbeat mood of the story and portray many common frontier activities. Based on the true story of the founding of Lyle Station, Indiana, this will make an excellent addition to primary history units and may spur students to discover the histories of their own towns. Setting his story during a time when antislavery sentiment was gaining momentum, Sanders (Here Comes the Mystery Man, 1993, etc.) tells the story of a Tennessee family of freed slaves who make their way north to begin a new life in Indiana. James Starman narrates this metaphor-studded tale of a lesser-known side of frontier settlement. His family follows the drinking gourd for more than a month of nights as the ``buttery bowl of the moon filled up then emptied again.'' A kind fisherman with a ``face as wrinkled as an old boot'' carries them across the Ohio to the free soil of Indiana. A Quaker gift of seed and a borrowed mule and plow enable them to work the land, eventually drawing family and friends from the South to form a new community they call Freedom. Inspired by the true story of Lyles Station, Indiana, Sanders sketches with broad strokes a fictionalized portrait of another kind of struggle for freedom. Allen's trademark pastels are rendered in predominant smoky blues that provide powerful keyhole glimpses of family and farm set starkly against white canvas, accentuating the austerity of the days of frontier homesteading.
