Bukowski's chatty free verse (and fiction) about disappointment, drunkenness, racetracks, flophouses, lust, sexual failure, poverty and late-life success amassed an enormous following by the time of his death at age 73 in 1994. Billed as the last book with new Bukowski poems in it, this hefty collection also culls from his prior books, and it is all of a piece: the warnings about lost potency, the ironic takes on ailments of mind and body, the comradeship with everyone down at the heels, down on his luck, or down to his last shot of booze. Bukowski's best poems have an exaggerated, B-movie black-and-white aura about them. One new poem warns that/ nothing is wasted:/ either that/ or/ it all is. In another, hell is only what we/ create,/ smoking these cigarettes,/ waiting here,/ wondering here. Near the front of the volume comes a page-and-a-half-long verse manifesto, a poem is a city, that might describe what Bukowski could do: a poem is a city filled with streets and sewers, it begins, filled with saints, heroes, beggars, madmen... banality and booze, and yet a poem is the world. About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and ...

Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and sentimental because Bukowski I don't think would have appreciated it or thought it too trite expressing the elite-est "cuteness".

Bukowski wasn't cute or pretty in his writing...he wrote what he saw around him with an awake and aware in-the-moment presence that is reality. Reality is not pretty or kind. I love his writing for that.

Also I found the words to his dead love in the poems "for Jane: with all the Love I had, Which Was Not Enough:", "Notice", and "for Jane" more touching than anything I have read in a long time. The grief he felt was enormous, world wrecking and I identified with that grief since I lost my husband and soul mate two years ago. I cried on the evening train reading these poems and found myself saying aloud "He KNEW!"

No one that has lost such an integral part of themselves is able to express that sort of gut wrenching of a tribute without having truly loved and suffered greatly.

He made me laugh, think, gasp at the rawness of life I remember seeing living in the outskirts of San Francisco in the 70's. He took down a memory lane of my own childhood and re-examine myself in a way I haven't in a very, very long time.

I never met you, Chuck, but I feel like I knew you, I would buy you a drink at the races if I could. Thank you for being so brutishly honest and more clean in your observations about the world than 80% of the population.

Bukowski clean? Oh, yeah.

He stripped down things to what they actually are instead of what society likes to pretend them to be. That to me is a clean, healthy lungful of fresh air! He was vulgar in his language, but in case you haven't really stepped out of your cubicle or hide-y hole...the world IS vulgar, uncivilized and mean and a vast majority of us in the lower classes (which is damn near anyone under a million anymore) lives with that. We're your elderly on the pensions and social security, waitresses, garbage men, retail sales people, and secretaries. You know, the ones the upper classes can't live without because we are the professional maids and nannies and buttwipers making minimum wage to slightly over, but still in the poverty level that make their world go round. We see the unsanitized and unedited truth. Mother Nature is one cruel mother. Bukowski had the balls to say it!

Simply, the most bone-jarring honesty you've read. Forget that it's been labeled 'poetry'.

Language warning!
However, if you like honest emotion, straightforward observations of the human condition that ring with truth, and you have sufficient maturity to acknowledge a certain amount of coarse verbiage sometimes expresses reality, this is, maybe, the only poetry book you'll ever want.
You'll laugh,
you'll cringe,
you'll be turned on and
turned off.
You'll see yourself,
and want to take a good, hot shower afterwards.

An incredible collection, but nowhere near definitive

There's a lot of good in this book, but it misses some incredible poems. First of all, I'm really surprised that Some People didn't make it in... seeing as how it's easily one of Bukowski's most quoted poems. Same with Wandering in the Cage.

My first Bukowski poetry book was Betting on the Muse. It made me fall in love with the dude. But the choices here are pretty terrible. Avoiding Humanity, the secret, let not, a challenge to the dark, think of it are all essential Bukowski. The worst omission is easily "let it enfold you." It's a fantastic poem of Bukowski examining life and allowing himself to be happy with what he has. It's one of his all time best, and it's hard to justify not including it.

What Matters Most... has the most poems of any of his books, but most of the choices are just, eh. Lifedance is essential, icecream people is great, as is a vote for the gentle light and be alone. 25 poems from this book are here, and they didn't do a very good job of picking the best.

A few more that are absolutely essential: i met a genius, dreamlessly, splashing, hug the dark, downers, they are everywhere, alone with everybody, and it's a shame.

But most (definitely not all) of the poems in this book are fantastic. The last few written near the end of his life are pretty perfect. There are some hilarious ones (who needs it, a threat to my immortality), great political ones (American Flag shirt, putrefaction, commerce), and of course all the big ones (crunch, genius of the crowd, bluebird, etc).

It's a fantastic collection. But don't stop here. Don't even think about it.

A Great Introduction to Spring Framework!

I purchased this book looking for a practical guide to using Spring Framework for developing web applications. I found the book and included exercises very easy to follow. Mr. Liu gives enough information to be able to move through each step with practical understanding, but not so much detail that you get bogged down. The included tutorial, along with information and downloads available on his website, make it possible for a beginner to complete a basic web applications project in a short period of time; which is very rewarding when you see fast results relative to the amount of time spent studying. This book is an excellent way to jump in and get a feel for what these technologies can do, opening your eyes to what is possible using Java and Spring Framework. It is not an exhaustive work on the subject, rather a tour through the concepts and structures by an experienced guide who can explain complex issues in a way that is understandable to the beginner. Mr. Liu's book gives you a taste of the web application development process and leaves you with the knowledge and desire to move on to your own development projects.

As a side note: When I had a question during the course of working through the tutorial exercises, I wrote an e-mail to the author directly and he not only replied but showed concern at whether I had resolved the issue and had been able to complete my project. I had in fact worked through the issue using materials on his website and in his book, but his personal response and genuine concern for my problem was impressive.

I would definitely recommend this book to others as a great way to experience Spring Framework without the long learning curve usually needed to grasp unfamiliar technologies.

Excellent Book for experienced developers

This is a very concise book to cover a very complex development process and environement. The author Henry Liu did a good job describing the backgorund and structure of the framework, and use an enterprise application to demonstrate the development process. I have been a software developer and system administrator doing both roles on and off for over 20 years and don't come across that many end-to-end applications in a book which I can borrow some concepts and software code structure for my own development. Many of the books on the popular Spring Framework are out of date, this book is very current to 2012 and likely to early 2013 until the next release of Eclipse or Spring. That is very important for developers who want to transition to Open Source platform, say from .Net environment or someone who is not current on software development and want to get up to speed in a short time. I like the author using SOBA secured online banking application, somewhat complex to illustrate the concept and the whole development process. You will gain more high level system knowledge than using simple hello world type of examples by many authors on these topics.
This is not a book one can read fast or skip some chapters. We developers are always short on time. I have to patiently read through all the chapters, and some times read through it multiple times and trace through the code. The author is excellent in responding to my email for help. This book does not cover much on the technical concept in detail, but do discuss the various building blocks such as MVC, N-Tier architecture, object mapping and security in a concise manner. Again these are highly complex technical topics which would be a book by itself. In addition, the application also requires user have some knowledge of MySQL, Maven and of course intermediate level of Java programming. It does provide a step by step approach over several chapters for the development of the SOBA demonstration. I have a much better perspective on using Spring Framework now for my own development project which conceptually is simplier than SOBA. So I am happy with my learning experince from this book.

Incomplete and misnamed

I'm a java developer by day and a mobile developer on the weekends. I wanted these two worlds to marry up and allow me to build fast scalable native apps with a RESTful backend and this book was highly rated. I'm wondering why.

This book has no development in it, it's simply a download the entire source code for one of the applications in the book and walk through what everything is. There's no development at all, no chance to gain that muscle memory. And the code that is downloaded? It has numerous issues with it's SQL access layer and throughs the SQL equivalent of null pointer exceptions when you try to test the app as described in one of the chapters.

Finally, when one gets to appendix F, and is trying to download the files for the structure of the quick and dirty spring/hibernate/mysql and maven 3 app, the files aren't at the author's site where he instructs users to download them.

The glowing reviews for this book are misleading, and lead one to believe they weren't written by actual users of the book. I'm off to use the web for instruction on actually developing a spring mvc 3 app, since this book was almost a complete waste of time.

About the Author
Originally from Ireland, James is a writer who has spent time living in Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, and the United Kingdom. While living in Germany he broke nearly every single one of these rules, but writing a book about what not to do in Germany means he is able to put each cultural faux pas down to 'research'.��-�Niklas is originally from Germany and has lived in several countries including Sweden and China. After working for a number of international teams at several companies, he realised that his colleagues were both intrigued and humoured by some of the 'German' things he did. Seeing that there was an interest in German mannerisms, he started putting together notes for what would eventually become the published book.

Excellent, funny read with many uncommon insights

So funny and a great tool for Ausl�nder who want to get better acquainted with Germany... I'm an American expat living in Germany so I've read a lot of these kinds of books/essays/etc over the years and this is probably the best one yet. Many regurgitate the same old cliches about Germans being punctual and not crossing the street when the light is red, but German Men Sit Down to Pee has really unique insights--even the title is something that I used to laugh at an old boyfriend for but never realized it was a cultural phenomenon. It's well-written overall, a pleasant, easy read, and has lots of good-to-know anecdotes about bureaucracy, the "administrative police" that give tickets for civil offences, and other subjects that inevitably surprise people that move here from other countries. Great purchase/gift for any newbie to Germany, and also just a funny little guide for anyone who's interested in German culture. I'll be giving it to students and longer-term visitors for sure.

Laugh and Learn

This is a fun but genuinely helpful book that gives newcomers, expats, and visitors to Deutschland good, accurate information and insight about German customs--all while making you chuckle. A pretty fast read, I wish this had been around before I moved to Germany! I had worried that it would just be like reading a few blog posts or top tens on the Internet, but it wasn't. Although some of the information is familiar to me after over 3 years of living here as an expat, I still managed to learn something. The author provides historical and cultural references within his anecdotes, so while the book reads fast and primarily entertains, you *do* walk away feeling like you've learned something. That's important, and I think this book made the grade.

A nice, funny and useful piece of reading

If there’s one country that seems to be the favourite target of several stereotypes, it’s definitely Germany. While some of them are by all means exaggerated, several of them are, in fact, true, to my view at least!
And “German Man Sit Down to Pee...” is definitely quite a collection of them! I’ve experienced myself some of them in the 2 years since I've moved to Germany and I’ll just some up now my “top 10” insights which proved to be perfectly right!
1. Germans DO seem to have every insurance policy available out there
2. Work time is for work (and ALMOST nothing else)
3. You DO have to bring cake on your birthday/thesis presentation/first day in the office/last day in the office
4. Having a hobby is important (and has to be taken as seriously as possible)
5. Germans do “go Dutch when paying in a restaurant” (one of the best inventions ever, although I never heard of it being called “Dutch” before).
6. The sit down when you pee part: I had no clue of this particular one, but after asking around (oh, yes, I did that!!) it turned out to be generally true, at least in what concerns the situation at home.
7. Recycle: they day I moved in my first shared flat (with Germans) and found the different garbage containers: for paper, aluminium waste, biodegradable, plastic and glass (white, green and brown!!) came, in fact, with the great feeling of finally doing the right thing.
8. Cycling is very “in” around here!
9. Nazi jokes are to be avoided: sometimes, over a beer or two, this topic might have come up a few times, but, indeed it was NEVER a topic for jokes.
10. There is an “asparagus season”! At least in Bavaria!
While I’ve read many exaggeration on this topic, this book seems to be quite accurate. Surprisingly enough, however, most of the Germans I’ve met are not so keen on punctuality, quite a few of them have a thing for crossing the street on red light and most of the people I’ve come across are really (really) polite and nice in their speech even upon disapproval.
However, I really enjoyed the reading: funny, easy to follow, well researched! As a newcomer to Germany, it is interesting to compare the authors’ experiences, views and conclusions with my own! It is definitely a useful and pleasant read. I highly recommend it to anyone planning on coming/moving to Germany!

There should always be Hope...

Cutter was first introduced in the Sacred Hearts MC series. When we last heard of him, he was left behind in the dust of Reaver's and Hayden's reunion. While you know him and Hayden were a dead end road even before the "resurrection" of Reaver, you can't help but feel sorry for what he has to give up.

Reading Cutter's Hope, we get more insight to the wonderful man Cutter truly is. Yes, he is the head of an MC. Yes, he has his violent moments. And yes, he, too, does have feelings and they revolve around Hope. Sassy, strong-minded, determined Hope was just the woman to "handle" Cutter. And when she has weak moments, Cutter was there to be her pillar of strength. The dynamics in their relationship just work well.

The sub characters... well, I just have to say I can't wait to read Nothing.. but alas, his is the third book. But that's not to say, I am not looking forward to Marlin's book.

As always AJ Downey, I enjoyed your book and look foward to the next one anxiously! You rock!!

I was hooked from the first page to the last

I've only read two other books by this author 'Damaged and Dangerous' and 'Masked and Miserable' but from the little bit of Cutter we got in 'Damaged' I knew I wanted more especially when I read the blurb for his book.
Cutter is the president of The Kraken MC a small MC based in the town of Ft. Royal Florida.
Hope is ex military highly trained and lethal and she's looking for her sister Faith who went missing two years ago in New Orleans while on vacation with her friend Tonya. Hope has spent two years searching for her sister, following every lead, a Private Investigator she hired finally found some information on Tonya which leads straight to a Cutter's door.
Cutter is just fabulous, a hot intelligent biker and Hope is amazing so this was always going to be good but despite their initial attraction to each other both Cutter and Hope are careful and wary, he needs to protect his club and she just wants her sister so a game of cat and mouse ensues but chemistry like theirs can't be ignored for long.
This is a great book I was hooked from the first page to the last, I loved all the characters, the story plus the additional characters in fact The Voodoo Bastards came close to steeling the show at times and while I know the next two books belong to Marlin and Nothing I wish they were Ruth and La Croix, hopefully they'll get theirs in the future.
I know I mentioned above that Hope was amazing and I can't stress enough just how refreshing it is to come across a woman who can more than look after herself, she's intelligent, determined and loyal and it makes such a nice change from the ever increasing ranks of TSTL females who make stupid decision after stupid decision.
I will just add that I don't give 5* easily.

Well. AJ Downey has done it again!! This is a really great book and start to a new series. There is also a visit with Reaver and Doll from
the Sacred Hearts MC. I would highly recommend this book to everyone and can't wait for the next one.
Oh yeah, Cutter was hotttttt!!!

Great Find!

I was so glad to have found this book. I first heard about it during an interview with the author on NPR. It is broken down into short, enjoyable segments. Many activities/challenges to try. I particularly like how it is stressed that creativity is a skill that needs to be practiced and that everyone is creative. This book has been done incredibly well and it's definitely one that I will be keeping on my bookshelf.

While I enjoyed the other books in the series

What I admire about this and all of CelebrityTypes typology books is
their astute interpretation of the functional theory. With the "Another Look" series
in particular, they artfully manage to give readers an in depth look at each the type,
while being careful not to bog down the functions in overly specific
representations that limit their scope.

While I enjoyed the other books in the series, I especially
appreciated how this one systematically discussed each function in the stack
and for considerable length, which may not always be the case for the lower two functions.
Admittedly, it did have the effect of the description becoming
increasingly negative, but it was nonetheless an accurate and illuminating portrayal
of the INTP
