A classic for every card magician's library!

"The Expert at the Card Table", published in 1902 by S.W. Erdnase (a pseudonym for the real author--Milton Franklin Andrews), is a classic work on card manipulation. Summarizing and explaining virtually all important card sleights known at the time, the work has influenced every important card worker since. Professionals (e.g., Dai Vernon, who also annotated Erdnase's work in his "Revelations") and amateurs (e.g., Martin Gardner, who tracked down the real identity of Erdnase--his summary appears at the end of this book) alike have used the material in "The Expert at the Card Table" as a starting point for thinking, refining and inventing new card sleights. Darwin Ortiz, in my opinion currently the most knowledgeable authority on card sleights and gambling scams, presents "The Annotated Erdnase", a text of commentary and discussion on the original Erdnase book. Ortiz brings his considerable knowledge of magic to bear on Erdnase's text. Each page of the book is double column, with the original Erdnase text on the left and Ortiz's comments on the right. All important topics and sleights covered in Erdnase (shuffling, cuts, palming, shifts, forcing, changes, transformations, and the slide) are scrutinized by Ortiz. He not only clarifies the original work, but also comments on how these sleights have been changed or improved on since the original text. Ortiz also includes specific references, e.g., title, author and page number, of important works that allow the reader to further his research into a particular sleight or move. Photographs of important moves also enhance the clear text. The clarity of the writing, the scope of the research, and the depth of magical understanding of Darwin Ortiz are to be admired.The original Erdnase text has been referred to as "the cardman's Bible". If so, then Ortiz has written the New Testament. Any serious card magician has to have this book in his library. It really is a classic.
