In this perceptive account of the Gulf War, acclaimed writer Dilip Hiro reveals the complex political-economic motivation and diplomatic maneuvering that preceded the 42-day conflict. He argues that Saddam Hussein failed to draw the right lessons from the Iran-Iraq war and thus grievously miscalculated the international response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Containing maps, a chronology of events, extensive source-notes and all relevant Security Council resolutions, the book is a comprehensive and objective chronicle of the war and an important aid for understanding contemporary Middle Eastern affairs. Also includes 12 maps.

Giving this one star because 'zero stars' isn't an option
By E.J. Kaye
Densely packed work focuses on the political aspects of the conflict. Clearly written by someone straining to show objectivity, the author nevertheless fails to overcome a strong thread of anti-Americanism/anti-Semitism that runs through the book. In the author's telling, Saddam Hussein comes off as misunderstood and seeking to manipulate events because of pan-Arab concerns, while any Allied attempt to roll back the Kuwait invasion is met with 'blood for oil' as a sole reason. In the author's view, the Arab world was essentially tricked by those wiley, deceitful Americans into fighting a war of choice.
Some of the reportage gets awful tedious, particularly in replaying entire conversations. Facts are cherry-picked, Palestinians are completely innocent of any wrongdoing, and General Schwarzkopf is a blow-hard whose military victory was one of propaganda as opposed to planning. The author also doesn't spare us from his distaste for the media blackout surrounding the Coalition military preparation, as if the world's 'need to know' supercedes the saving of US and allied lives by not tipping their hand to the enemy.
Finally, the formatting of the book for e-reader is abysmal, packing the author's already dense prose into an eyestraining block of text that is only partially alleviated by Kindle's ability to change text size and spacing.
If you hate easy-to-read books and the USA, this book is for you. If not, give it a pass.

Worst written book ever.
By mlm
As the title for my review states, this is the worst written book that I have ever read.
Hiro's sentences are so long that it's easy to forget what you've been reading when you get to the end. There are pictures of events taking place during and after the war placed in the middle of a chapter that discusses events immediately preceding the war. These pictures literally interrupt a sentence which sends the reader flipping through seven pages of poorly placed material.
I would not recommend this book to anyone for any reason whatsoever. You're more likely to get clearer and more organized information from Wikipedia.
