Finally - a great Birds & Bees for boys
By Miss FiFi LaRue
After starting with my daughter on "The Care & Keeping of You" (by the American Girl Co.), I really wanted to find a book for my son. He is almost 11, and things are starting to happen. This was the first book that tactfully goes thru all the changes & challenges that face pre-teen and teenage boys. I was very suprised at all the areas that are covered - even more than my husband or I would've thought of talking with him about. If you are going to start with this book with a pre-teen, I would just caution to either wait a little, or read thru the book yourself first. I felt it was more geared toward either a more mature pre-teen boy or the actual teenagers. I purchased the "Bloom" book for my 9-year old daughter at the same time. The American Girl book is just the right stage for her. I will be waiting a while before we start on the "Bloom" book for the same "maturity level" reasons.

Book for adolescent boys
By Emilie D. LaFave
I bought this for my then 14 year old grandson.
You know boys that age are embarrassed to tell
you if they read something like this. So I don't
know. I read some of it and found it to be
very readable, and I feel it would be very
helpful to a young teen boy.

excellent introduction to Apple's new Photos app released in 2015 to replace its iPhoto and Aperture apps. Book is very clearly written, with much information about Photos app you would never discover unless told about. Virtually every page has colour photo or screenshot illustrating information in the text. Definitely the "go to" book if you are starting off in Photos (when you have the basics, the next level up is the "My Photos for Mac" book, but it is very heavy going if you have not read this one first)

why oh why are authors so negligent? i got the book to learn how to export a picture and put it somewhere else on my box. the software is just at bad, it allows me to "export" the picture but it does not tell me the name of the file or where it is. are those not really important things i need to know? this book tells me how to export to social media, that assumes that the only place i want to export to is social media. grrrr. what is wrong with this author? he does not bother to tell me how to export a picture to a file somewhere on my machine! he could have spent ten minutes and one paragraph to say the default location and format. i would use the word "stupid" but maybe what is going on is that i don't know what is going on. doesn't everyone understand a file system? is this book aimed at people who don't know what a directory is? why oh why...

The Ultimate Piston Fighters of the Luftwaffe, by Justo Miranda

The development of aviation engines in Germany was revolutionary during closing stages of the War. In 1945, the Daimler Benz, Jumo and BMW engines in service, equipped with power boosting systems, generated 2,000 hp. There were prototypes that could generate 3,000 hp and BMW/ Argus projects could reach 4,000 hp. To benefit from their extreme performances, Blohm und Voss, Daimler Benz, Dornier, Focke Wulf,Heinkel, Henschel, Messerschmitt and Skoda designed an impressive series of fighters that never left the drawing board. The reason was the decision taken by the Oberkommando der Luftwaffe to mass-manufacture the iconic and revolutionary Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. This lost generation of projects were quickly forgotten and after years of research have been recovered and presented in this book. Profusely illustrated with technical drawings and fascinating data and information on the Luftwaffe's most radical fighter projects, Justo Miranda chronicles these revolutionary designs that might have changed the course of the war. A fascinating book for the military historian, modelers and those interested in aviation, this shows how advanced German scientists were towards the end of the Second World War and how the beloved Spitfire and Mustang would have been instantly superseded by radical Nazi fighters.

About the Author
Justo Miranda is the author of books and monographs on aviation since the 1980s. A widely known historian, Miranda specialises in aviation of the 1930s and is the author of two volumes on aircraft used during the Spanish Civil War. The exciting discovery of a microfilm on secret German weapons in the early 1990s drove him to publish Secret Wonder Weapons of the Third Reich, later published by Schiffer in 1996. Since then, Miranda has published Reichdreams and Unknown!, monographs on little known airplane projects.

Needed to be more than just manufacturers drawings reproduced
By ManhattanXPat
The book provides a list of the various projects that each aircraft manufacturer in Nazi Germany had as the war in Europe drew to a close. Many of the drawings reproduced here were not even close to a prototype being built and really represent potential ideas rather than something coming close to an 'ultimate piston fighter'. The commentary provided by the authors is very, very brief and is limited to comments on a particular project. I found this disappointing as I would have liked to have had an explanation of why these projects were important and to what extent they had been developed, if at all. The commentary does not provide a narrative that could link the various design concepts together. Nor does it explain how some of the more fanciful designs might have been feasible or even capable of threatening the Allied aircraft operating at the time. I still found the book interesting for the designs that were reproduced and it does appear (I say 'appear' as I am not an expert) to be comprehensive in its coverage of the projects from each aircraft manufacturer. If you do want a better idea of the state of the German aviation industry at the end of the war, the ideas that designers were considering as well as an explanation of the technology and presents all of that in the context of the time, then I would recommend 'Last Talons of the Eagle' by Gary Hyland. This book is useful if you already know something about the subject it covers.

A Must Read For Anyone Interested In the Luftwaffe, Military Aviation, And The Second World War!
By Dr.M.Lawicki
This book provides a fascinating glimpse at what might have been a very interesting chapter in military aviation, had the Second World War not closed in so rapidly on Hitler's Third Reich. The year 1943 marked the beginning of the end of the Luftwaffe; the limitless resources and industrial capacity of the United States was brought fully to bear on a Germany reeling from its first series of catastrophic military defeats in North Africa and Stalingrad. There were a few realists in the German military hierarchy who understood after America joined the conflict that German industrial output could never hope to keep pace with their Allied adversaries. Thus began the desperate search for and frantic development of the so-called 'wonder-weapons,' whose devastating lethality (the Germans hoped) would
force the Allied nations to sue for peace. This obviously never happened, and many in the German military hierarchy were slow to realize that they could never recapture the momentum of the opening phase of the war in which Blitzkrieg served them so well. In the ensuing struggle for the survival of the Third Reich, German scientists and engineers advanced the science of aeronautics by leaps and bounds; their achievements markedly outpacing comparable research and development in Great Britain and the United States. Nevertheless, inept strategizing and an astounding lack of foresight and planning by Adolf Hitler soon became apparent as the war situation dramatically worsened for Germany beginning in 1943. In a nutshell, Nazi Germany was not the least bit materially prepared for a war of prolonged duration. In the latter stages of the conflict, Luftwaffe pilots found themselves outnumbered in the air by ratios of nearly 100 to 1 as by this time the majority of experienced German pilots and commanders were already dead or were being killed off in the increasingly lopsided aerial battles on the Eastern and Western Fronts. Teenaged boys with less than 36 hours of experience flying planes were thrust into Focke Wulf cockpits and sent up into the air against better equipped and vastly more experienced USAAF and RAF pilots. To make matters worse, the petrol/gasoline shortage caused by round-the-clock Allied bombing raids was severe enough to ground the remnants of Luftwaffe fighter squadrons in the last several months of the war. German pilots could do nothing except watch helplessly from their bases on the ground as the American and British bombing armadas droned overhead--virtually unopposed. It became evident to many in the German High Command--except for Hitler and Hermann Goering--that superior machines and wonder weapons would not defeat the formidable adversaries of Germany as had been hoped. Many of the innovative designs, new engines, and advanced airplane prototypes showed considerable promise, but for Germany it was always too little and too late in the game to make any difference in their war effort. The successful development of the worlds first jet-propelled fighters in 1943-4, in particular the Me-262, understandably convinced Hitler and the Luftwaffe High Command to abandon or suspend production of many piston-engined airplanes and prototypes then in production (with a few notable exceptions) in favor of their latest technological triumph. Jet engines represented the obvious future of military aeronautics, and Germany's industrial resources in 1943-5 were dwindling too rapidly to consider the tactical advantages the newer piston engined planes in various stages of development might offer. Despite the fact that hostile forces were closing in rapidly on Nazi Germany, manufacturers like Daimler Benz, Jumo, and BMW were somehow still capable of cranking out piston-powered engines producing 2,000 hp with power-boosting systems--at the time a logistical triumph. There were even prototypes that could generate 3,000 hp, and BMW/Argus projects that could reach an estimated 4,000 hp! What surprises me the most about these piston-engined superperformers is that many of them, in my humble opinion, could have outperformed their earliest jet counterparts if given more trials, time, and opportunity. The interesting schematic diagrams provided by the author Justo Miranda provide much detail and background information about each particular plane--although it is important to remember that with a few notable exceptions many of these planes never made it off the drawing board. The last few chapters of the book relate to advanced weapons systems, a few of which were utilized effectively at the very end of the war in the jet fighter squadrons. As an avid modeler and amateur historian I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It provides much fuel for thought, and many of these futuristic designs seem plausible even now, some 69 years after the conflict has ended. Well done, Mr Miranda.

kinda cool

I loved the content of this book! I would have loved to see some artists renderings however and not just the 3 view drawings. The binding was less than stellar as it has already begun to crack in the center. A very interesting read though.

This book was written for ESL students whose written work looks like this:"It was a busy day at the store. She was a talk on the phone. She not want buy candy for child. He wasn t early his date, he buy eggs but his child she play."

In this book, students progress slowly and methodically, with ample practice each step of the way. The book starts with the basics the difference between a word, sentence, and paragraph; the difference between a paragraph and a list; how to distinguish complete from incomplete sentences and moves forward from there. Students shed bad usage and punctuation habits early as they learn to edit their work and progress from writing simple paragraphs to writing paragraphs with more varied and complex sentences.

This book s methodology is simple; each chapter includes short lessons in grammar, sentence structure, and mechanics that students work through in preparation for an end-of chapter writing assignment that, in most cases, is based on a personal experience.

The audience for this book is ESL students at the low intermediate level as well as native English speakers who, for whatever reason, didn t master rudimentary writing skills. It assumes students have been exposed to basic English grammar, including knowledge of subject pronouns, possessive adjectives, preposition of time and place, and simple present and present continuous verbs.

Very Helpful Book
By BL
I used Writing in English: Step by Step in my high intermediate ESL class last winter. The book is very well organized and focused. Each chapter focuses on a couple of grammar and writing points (nouns, verbs, present tense, past tense, adjectives, punctuation, compound sentences etc.). Each chapter also has a specific topic to write about that is interesting and actually quite meaningful to the students. There are a lot of useful and innovative grammar exercises to reinforce the grammar as well. The book helps students brainstorm, write, edit, and re-write paragraphs. I found the book to be very helpful and will continue to use it as my writing source in my ESL classes.

Practical writing book for ESL students
By Veronica Main
This is a great companion to the Step by Step grammar books by the same author. It is especially helpful for students with limited knowledge of writing in English and clearly explains the differences between English and Spanish. I have one student who has struggled with the high school exit exam and this book made the difference! She said she now understands a lot of concepts that had eluded her in high school--and she has her Diploma! There are lots of opportunities for practice in both structured and real-life situations. The price makes it very affordable.

Writing in English: Step by Step by Elizabeth Weal
By Patricia Tiernan-Stahler
As a teacher of English for forty years, I have used hundreds of books with students. When one finds books that REALLY WORK and positively impact student learning, teacher and learner enthusiasm abounds! Elizabeth Weal's books are winners! It was a lucky day when I discovered them! The books target those very common hurdles for English learners in a manner whereby success is imminent. The best time and money spent lies within the pages of Ms. Weal's books.

From Publishers Weekly
Carmody, an Australian author previously unpublished here, is certain to ensnare readers with this superbly crafted novel. Her plot has all the ingredients of a supernatural horror tale: a new kid arrives in a strange, Stepford-like village and joins up with a group of fellow students who undertake a cosmic battle against a mysterious evil force. But Carmody transcends the genre by relating the story through an unusually lifelike narrator, and she gives it urgency by suggesting that its supernatural elements can be interpreted as symbols for the tensions and painful mysteries of ordinary life, the dark causalities between the sins of the past and present crises. The foreboding atmosphere achieves a nearly visceral intensity as Nathaniel, the narrator, describes ever more specific phenomena--a pervasive stench from the town slaughterhouse; the erratic behavior of his well-trained dog, who meets a grotesque fate; the uncanny similarities between the school principal and the charismatic dancing teacher of a previous generation. The suspense never slackens, and the resolutions of the many conflicts are powerfully wrought. Utterly riveting. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10-Vile odors, feral dogs, fascistic school monitors, and a demonic principal combine to convince Nathaniel, 15, that something is terribly wrong in his new town. As part of a class assignment, he probes into local history and discovers the shocking truth about the death of a school janitor years ago. The evil from that chilling incident still grips Cheshunt and is now rapidly gaining power. Nathaniel finds himself drawn to a group of misfits at school and they are soon involved in a struggle against the terrible forces that seek total control of the community. Suspense builds slowly and creates an atmosphere of grim foreboding. However, Nathaniel is the only one of the young people whose personality is distinct, and the fantasy elements in the plot are not fully developed. The principal is, of course, pure evil. The other adults are mostly unaware of the epic battle shaping up around them. Only when evil is about to triumph do the young people at last understand the true nature of their power. It is this last-minute insight, however, that makes the chilling climax a success. The message-that love, loyalty, and true friendship can conquer jealousy and hatred-will not be lost on readers. What will attract and hold them, though, are the superbly crafted elements of horror, which are the story's real strength.

From Booklist
Gr. 9-12. From the moment he and his mother arrive in Cheshunt, Nathaniel has a "premonition of wrongness." The school is ruled by a brutal band of the principal's chosen ruffians. A pack of feral dogs roams the streets at night to enforce the "voluntary" curfew, and the stench of death from the slaughterhouse pervades everything. When he is approached to become the final link in the Chain, a secret society attempting to defy the powers that be, Nathaniel is too curious to refuse. Then his visions of the failure of an earlier Chain begin as he is placed in the middle of a life-and-death struggle to discover the key to overcoming the evil that has taken over Cheshunt. Carmody effectively creates and sustains a sinister atmosphere that will appeal to readers of supernatural and horror fiction. Nathaniel's character is well developed, and his fears and frustrations are wholly believable as the web of darkness draws tighter around the town. There are some holes and unresolved loose ends in the plot, but the basic premise (the villain who creates chaos and then plays on people's fear of violence to manipulate them into accepting him as their salvation) holds up well--the message is clear but not tedious. This chilling tale will be a snap to booktalk and an excellent vehicle for reluctant readers. The scene in which Nathaniel's dog is set on fire might be a bit graphic for the more sensitive. Chilling, disturbing and utterly compelling
By Laraine A. Barker
"Outside the wind was blowing the wrong way and the world was filled with the smell of death ..."
At face value, Cheshunt is a model neighbourhood. But almost as soon as he and his mother move there Nathanial knows there is something wrong--something hideously wrong. And it isn't just the stench from the old abattoir, which doesn't seem to bother most residents.
Nathanial soon learns he is not in Cheshunt by accident. As the dark calls its own, so does the light. Nathanial must confront phantoms from his own past if he and all the others called by the light have any hope of stopping the Gathering and its creator.
The word "dark" in The Gathering should really have a capital letter (as it does in Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising) for the forces of evil could not have been more vividly realised than in this book. A number of people who have read it see the Cheshunt school's headmaster, Mr Karle ("the Kraken") as a representation of Hitler. In a quote on the book's front flyleaf Terry Lane is reported to have called The Gathering "a dark, grim allegory of fascism". Many young readers might not realise just how accurate the analogy is because Hitler actually ran an organisation called The Occult Bureau. (If anything proves how insane Hitler was, this waste of time and resources surely does.)
The evil depicted in The Gathering is truly spine-chilling and I think the main reason for this is that Carmody doesn't rely solely on occultism to create the evil. While Nathanial's schoolmate Buddha (a very strange name for an evil character) is clearly driven by the Kraken's supernatural influence when he burns Nathanial's dog alive, there is nothing supernatural about how he does it. I found this incident so disturbing it kept me awake for hours. The scene in the fourth Harry Potter book that several people described as too frightening for many children pales by comparison. This is partly because monsters like Voldemort exist only in someone's imagination. Any well-adjusted child knows this, but also knows that it would be all too easy to murder a little dog as Buddha does.
I found a page of reviews by teenagers ([...]) where there were quite a few readers who didn't like The Gathering, and I suspect this is because they had to study it at school and write an essay on it, or answer a series of questions calculated to make them really think. (Some of them seem to have entered their views here.) Most young people would probably have enjoyed The Gathering if simply given it as being a "cool" book to read. Although the page of reviews mentioned above is peppered with the sort of review so often found on amazon.com (i.e., the "this is the best book in the world" type of review) several children have posted the material they were required to produce when studying the book at school.

The Gathering is a very emotional and mysterious book!
By Rebecca
Isobelle Carmody typically writes strong female characters. This is from a male perspective and I have to say she didn't miss a beat. She wrote an amazing male character that was able to overcome the adversity in his life despite constant obstacles being thrown in his way from people not wanting him to succeed in what he was trying to do. I laughed and cried in this book and was left wanting more. Hopefully she writes a sequel!

Magic...
By E. Ingram
It's my kind of genre: creepy, mystical, shut-up-with-the-reality-already kind of stuff I love to read. This book is...a mystical fight between a good group and an evil group. I want to say, "simple as that," but honestly, it's not at all simple. It's complicated. It's maddening, sometimes, how the truth is right in front of you and none of the adults in the book will believe it.

Ultimately, good read, good style, good craft. I'd give this book a B. It didn't BLOW ME AWAY, but it gets high marks in creativity, style, plot and okay marks in character. There were some things I didn't buy. It's also tied up a little too nicely at the end. I'd have liked for it to have been a bit more complicated at the end and a bit faster at the beginning, but it seems many authors have this problem. It's nothing that ruins this book. Just a matter of author choice.

I will, however, also warn that there are a few rather graphic scenes which are appropriate for the story and make complete and total sense in the book, but if you're recommending this to a young person who is easily upset, it may not be the best choice. But then, this magic/fantasy/science fiction genre may not be the best choice for such a reader, anyway.

About the Author
Ben Counter is one of Black Library’s most popular Warhammer 40,000 authors, with two Horus Heresy novels to his name – Galaxy in Flames and Battle for the Abyss. He is the author of the six-volume Soul Drinkers series and The Grey Knights Omnibus. For Space Marine Battles he has written Malodrax, and has turned his attention to the Space Wolves with the novella Arjac Rockfist: Anvil of Fenris and a number of short stories. He is a fanatical painter of miniatures, a pursuit which has won him his most prized possession: a prestigious Golden Demon award. He lives in Portsmouth, England.
Josh Reynolds has blazed a trail across the Warhammer World with the novels Master of Death, Neferata and Knight of the Blazing Sun, along with the Gotrek and Felix tales Charnel Congress, Road of Skulls and The Serpent Queen. As well as numerous short stories, he has also written the Warhammer 40,000 audio drama Master of the Hunt and contributed to the Apocalypse anthology Damocles with the novella Hunter's Snare. He lives and works in Sheffield.
Guy Haley is the author of the Space Marine Battles novel Death of Integrity, as well as Skarsnik and Baneblade, and the Horus Heresy audio drama 'Hunter's Moon'. He worked for many years on magazines, including Games Workshop’s White Dwarf. Since 2009 he has been a wandering writer, working in both magazines and novels. He lives in Somerset with his wife and son.
Phil Kelly has been a devotee of myths, monsters and magic for three decades, the last of which has been spent working as a games developer in Games Workshop’s Design Studio. Over the years, Phil has made body parts as a sculptor, roamed the roofs of Nottingham as a free runner, played the stages of Glastonbury, dived shipwrecks in Thailand and discovered the time-saving joys of extreme ironing in his home county of Essex. Since meeting his future wife at a Los Angeles beach party, Phil has begun to settle down a bit. He now leads a nice normal life writing about fantastical armies, undead pirates and gribblies from outer space.

Good collection on the same theme and events
By JPS
This is a good collection of four novellas, each of which is about a hundred pages long. The general theme is the Tau invasion of the Empire, beyond the Gulf of Damocles, and their attack of the strategic Agrellan system. An interesting feature of this collection is that while the four stories can be read separately and are written by four separate authors, they are also clearly linked and the authors seem to have coordinated and talked to each other.

Another good feature is that this title does add to the existing collections in several respects. The descriptions of the Tau and the multiple illustrations of their highly advanced technology and their consummate skills of deception, subversion and surprise are one of the most interesting aspects that are common to all four stories. A second element that I enjoyed was the variety of styles and perspectives from which various episodes of the same theme of events – the Tau invasion – are being told. One perspective which I found particularly interesting what that of the human “traitors” – whether an ex-captain of the Imperial Guard or an ex-Inquisitor turned rogue – serving the Tau against the Empire of Humankind and wanting to believe in the “Greater Good” because they hope it is better than the ghastly, decadent and cruel Empire.

Those liking battles will, of course, find plenty to their liking. Interestingly, and for a change, the Imperials do not end up by winning, quite the contrary in fact since their shock troops, among which are the White Scars of Korsarro Khan and the Raven Guard commanded by their Chapter Master. Also present are a regiment of Catachans and the (great!) heavily armoured and devastating Knights of Voldoris who turn out to be more than a match for their Tau counterparts.

I liked all four stories, although some are perhaps better than others. While not really “bad”, I found that “Black Leviathan” was perhaps the weakest of the four, essentially because the behaviour of the squad of Jade Dragons’ Space Marines, and of their sergeant in particular, is hard to believe. At a minimum, the author should have provided more elements and explanations, perhaps more context about this Successor Chapter (about which I knew nothing, not even who their Primogenitor Chapter was supposed to be!) to explain why they compromised the whole mission in the way they did. The end of this story is also somewhat implausible, with the sergeant commanding the Jade Dragons’ squad getting of rather lightly given his actions.

Then there are the characters, many of which are rather interesting. You will get to know quite a bit more about the White Scars, their captain, but also a couple of their seers and Cemakan, the old grumpy veteran, but also about the Tau with their gifted warlord (or rather “warlady”) Shadowsun, and some of the other caster, in particular the idealist Skilltalker, ready to sacrifice himself for the “Greater Good”, and the rather unscrupulous Supreme Ethereal. My personal favourite, however, was Patriarch Tybalt of House Terryn and his massive Imperial Knights.

There are nevertheless a few glitches here and there and this is why I will rate the collection four stars, but not five. I have already mentioned those in “Black Leviathan”. There is also one in “Blood Oath”, the first and one of the strongest stories. Several mentions are made about a certain Traitor Shoh to which the warlord Shadowsun seems to be somewhat related but you never get to understand who this person is, what he has done to become a “traitor” in the eyes of the Tau and what the relationship with Shadowsun happens to be.

Problems with all these Space Marine novels
By Steven L. Coker
The problem with most of these Space Marine novels is they are pretty much all the same plot -- Bad guys pop up and catch them off guard. Big Battle - everyone dies, except the Big Name bad guys (who always seem to escape).
The Space Marines NEVVVER seem to be on the offensive and are always out-numbered.
Cant figure out why the Astartes NEVVVER seem to be the aggressors in these books. A few of the writers of these books are quite good but need to work on different angles.
I also wonder if anyone is ever going to write about the battle for Earth, when the Emperor and the traitors (Horus) battled it out. Something everyone knows happened but it has never been novelized.

Bookworm Speaks!- Damocles (Space Marine Battles)

Bookworm Speaks!

Warhammer 40,000

Damocles

by Phil Kelly, Guy Haley, Ben Counter, and Josh Reynolds

****

The Story: Four Novellas that focus on the events of the second Damocles Gulf Crusade.

Two centuries ago, the Imperium of Man and the upstart Tau Empire fought to a standstill in the Damocles Gulf. Now, as the 41st Millennium draws to a close, the Tau have returned. As the world of Agrellan falls under attack, the White Scars and the Raven Guard rush to its defense, but with the skilled Commander Shadowsun leading the alien forces, the Space Marines and their allies are hard pressed. Kor’sarro Khan, Huntmaster of the White Scars, swears that he will win the day in the most direct way possible-by taking Shadowsun’s head.

The Good: First off…it is a story of the White Scars. A first founding Legion under the Primarch Jaghatai Khan, who have an emphasis of mobile conflict, are sorely lacking proper representation in the Black Library, which is a real shame as they are quite fascinating. This is only the third book that emphasizes the White Scars to any significant degree. The same can be said about the Raven Guard. Bookworm doesn’t think he owns any books with the sons of Corvus Corax as the focus, which is also a shame. To see both chapters further expanded over the course of the novellas is a real treat. Furthering the entertainment value is the contrast to how the different chapters operate. The White Scar’s ride proudly into battle and collect the heads of their foes and display as trophies. The Raven Guard operate from the shadows and strike silently, their names unknown, even among their brothers. Contrast is a gateway to conflict and it leads into the primary reason why the antagonists of this volume are so appealing.

Of all the enemies of the Imperium of Man that Games Workshop has introduced, the Tau Empire may not be a favorite but from a creative standpoint they are one of the best. A great way to really challenge a protagonist is to pit them against themselves. The Tau represents what the Imperium of Man should have been had the Emperor had not been imprisoned upon the Golden Throne, a peaceful, progressive society, which values technological innovation and a government that works for the benefit of all, (supposedly). The Tau are also zealots in the same way that the Space Marines are. The Astartes fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Emperor and the Tau fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Greater Good, the philosophy that governs their society. The other enemies of the Imperium are fairly one dimensional: The orks just want to pillage and plunder, the Tyranids just want to eat everything, the Chaos Space Marines want to do both, and don’t get Bookworm started on the Necrons. The Tau are not a force of nature like Orks or Tyranids, they are a rival society which has multiple dimensions, same as the Imperium.

The only exception to this might be the Eldar but Bookworm has not read any stories about them yet.

Also, like the Imperium of Man, there may be less than honorable forces at work. While the Tau preach something that sounds good, the authors are wise to include little tidbits here and there that show that there is something far more insidious to the Tau than meets the eye. This is just Bookworm’s own hypothesis but it is hinted in one of the novellas that the Tau surgically alter humans to look like Tau. Whose greater good is it?

Speaking of covert motives. We get a new Space Marine Chapter! The Jade Dragons are introduces in the third novella of the volume. They are very interesting and Bookworm hopes we see them again. They definitely follow a more mystical approach to war than the Ultramarines. Like the differences between the White Scars and Raven Guard, the contrast between the two very different chapters provides amusing conflicts and different approaches between the chapters of the novella.

The Flaws: While by itself, the story is not bad, the fact is that the third novella in the book, Black Leviathan, feels out of place compared to the other stories. It takes place on a different planet other than Agrellan, which is contrary to the plot summary, and it involves neither the White Scars or the Raven Guard. It is back to the Black Library favorites of the Ultramarines, and The Jade Dragons, which we know nothing about. The other three stories share a common denominator but the only thing the Black Leviathan has in common with the other three is the fact that the Tau are there. We have plenty of Ultramarines stories, lets keep exploring the world of the Khan and the Raven.

Another common flaw is the disparate head-hopping that takes place. The perspectives switch places between the character pretty often and it can get a little confusing. In a few of the chapters the pacing needs some reworking.

Final Verdict: Damocles is an excellent book that provides multiple perspectives on a great crusade of the Imperium of Man.
