Still reeling from a devastating betrayal, and a shaky relationship with Ethan, her Guardian Angel, Samantha reluctantly seeks comfort with Damien - the original fallen, the devil whispered about and part of the original deception of Adam and Eve. She learns of the real reason for his existence – a sad and twisted reason that would force even the most ardent Bible thumpers to show sympathy. He agrees to help Samantha fight Sebastian but what she doesn't know is there is a price for Damien's involvement. A price she would never allow. The only problem is, she isn't the one making the sale.

She has done it again, folks!
By Sarah Jayne
Ms. Hughes has written another captivating story with characters that compel you to crawl into the Kindle.
Some - you'll want to console.
Some - you'll want to slap.
Some - you'll want to lick. (Yes, I have my favorite.)
Any way you look at it, Hughes is a phenomenal world builder and she makes the reader a part of the world she creates. It's almost like she's controlling a puppet; she has this fascinating ability to make a reader continue turning the pages a at a rapid pace to learn what happens next.
I applaud Hughes on another job well done and I recommend both Torn and Darkness Betrayed. Bravo! 5+ stars!

I want more!!
By andrewsap
After the betrayal of your best friend and the deaths of other friends what do you do? How do you grieve in a constant battle zone? The fight between good and evil is a long and hard one. The decisions you make will determine if you are an Exiled or a Faithful. Being only 18 make it all that much harder. Samantha is in love with her guardian angel but is having problems choosing to stay with him because they aren't suppose to be together. She wants him to be with her and wants to be with him but she doesn't see that happening any time soon. After training one day Samantha is taken by an Exiled and when she comes to she's chained to the floor.
Malena was once a Faithful, but like some Faithful and Exiled questioned her choices and wasn't sure where she truly stood. Having her choice taken from her she is now an Exiled. After Samantha wakes up chained to the floor Malena comes to her and tells her she's there to train her. Samantha can't control the dark and light inside herself to be the balance she wants to be.
Damien, the devil himself, was created to take the pain and suffering from the humans. He was once an angel in heaven but for his betrayal in the Garden of Eden was exiled and banished from heaven. Although he wasn't working alone. Sebastian was there whispering in the devils ear. Malena asked him for his help in deciding her side, Faithful or Exiled, and had the choice taken from her. She was made Damien's right-hand man and it is he who sends her to train Samantha. What he didn't know is that Samantha, though a healer, is also like him. She siphons the pain and anger away from her friends when a healer would just fill others with light. He wants her.
When you're desperate to help the ones you love you will do anything for them, even if you have to make a deal with the devil. When one returns another shall leave. There will always be a balance between good and evil even when one may start to tip the scales. What you do will determine who you are and what you fight for. Samantha is to be betrayed once more, but will she be able to keep her control? Can she stay enough in the light to be the balance she promised to be?
This book and this author are amazing! I honestly didn't want to finish this book because of how well written and entertaining it was. You get sucked into the story and just want to keep on going. You feel all the emotions each character has, you aren't just stuck with one or two feelings. You will touch a lot of different feelings while reading this book. I love when an author does so well of a job you are sucked into their world and can feel a part of it. I look forward to reading so much more from Christine Hughes!!

Broke my heart
By PRBabe5
Sorry Christine! Again, I wanted to love it, but damn, you made that really hard for me. I can say that I really, really got into this one...and you made me cry. And not to be offensive, but I did find this one better written than the first book. Even though this was an ARC, there weren't that many grammatical errors and it flowed really well.
Why I didn't love this....ETHAN
To be completely honest, Ethan is my favorite character. Not Sam, not Damien, not Lucas, etc. Unlike Sam, he tries to do what is right, always. And although his choices are not always great, he does it for the greater good, and he does it for Sam. The fact that he is completely betrayed broke my heart. To watch her slowly destroy him ate at me. I will give the author that. She built this up where I slowly felt his pain, her betrayal, and her decline into denial. But because my favorite character was the one that ultimately paid the price, I feel like I'm betraying him by saying that I loved this book. Perhaps book 3 will redeem the series.
Why Ethan and not Sam - Although I empathize with Sam's position, I mean who would want to have to balance dark and light, I still found her to be an extremely annoying brat. "Woe is me" is her theme. Yes, she does have a horrible future, but look at the greater picture and stop being so selfish. She has good people watching her back, a great guy who worships her, and the chance to make the ultimate difference. To make matters worse, enter Damien, the devil. Um? Hello, the devil! What about that screams "he's just misunderstood?". Even with everyone telling her to be careful, even after Lucas' betrayal in book 1, you think she would have learned her lesson? She still gets "seduced" by the whisperings of the devil...yep, he was seductive, but then remember, Eve? A little whispering in her ear resulted in eviction and pain. Our little Sam just can't seem to grow up and trust the lessons learned or to trust the people around her.
So yeah, I've got no love for Sam. At times she displayed the qualities I wanted to see in her, and maybe it is just me, because I really want her to be smarter, more focused, and less whiny. However, for the majority of the book, she just kept justifying her behavior and hey, everyone kept calling her out on it too. Now mind you, I felt this way about her in book 1 too, and I guess the good news is that she is consistent...no dramatic 180 for her.
We do get more Sebastian, Lucas, and the other characters from book 1, in addition to a couple of new ones. So before I give away more than I should, I am going to close with....I do think others will see the above as "crap" cause they just feel for Sam, and will instead just love the way the series is building (I would if I just didn't feel so much for one of the characters over all of the others combined). I won't say it is perfect, but I do think it is improving as we move through the series.
