A necessary starting-stone.

Of course, in a vastly changed historical context, bourgeois ideology cannot produce anything approaching the seemingly reactionary facility of the Disney comic (just compare Disney with Buffy, Xena, or other postmodern heroes!). However, anyone trying to understand changes in the ideological outlook of Mass Culture must, of necessity, regard this book as one's unavoidablke starting-stone. That's that.

Valuable - in its own Context

Dorfman and Mattelart's book is based on Donald Duck comics circulated throughout Latin America. Those books were translated and largely re-written by overzealous editors and are more different from than similar to Carl Barks' original comics. Insofar as one is interested in US / Latin American policy, politics and business, it is useful.

Disney's domestic business practives are by no means benign, but Barks is one of the more significant comics artists and enjoyed a much greater degree of creative freedom than most creators of the time. Barks cartooning is fluid and subtle, as is his storytelling.

For an insight into "the Duck Man's" work, check out Donald Ault's much more up-to-date book "Carl Barks: Conversations."

Down with Disney!

It just goes to show that even with the economy on a downturn the CEO of Disney walks away with 75 million dollars and gives the employees the dregs of the disney economy. This book is worth buying for it details the enormity of Diney's propaganda campaign to portray the third world as a place to be exploited. I've never saw such outright villainy as is portrayed in this classic by Dorfman. Disney portrays revolutionaries (in their comic strips) as essentially traitors and the reactionaries, and oligarchs as heroes with Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck and company as aiding their crimes.

Stovall's revelatory chronicle reclaims an important yet neglected chapter of cultural history, delineating a cohesive community of black American expatriate writers, artists, musicians and intellectuals in Paris from 1914 to the present. During WWI African American soldiers, targets of discrimination on the front and back home, were welcomed cordially by ordinary French citizens. Attracted by the myth of a color-blind France, Harlem Renaissance writers Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and Countee Cullen flocked to Paris; Josephine Baker conquered the stage with her sensational performances; jazz musicians Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Bill Coleman lived in and drew inspiration from the City of Light. In the 1930s African American expatriate writers and artists in Paris helped launch the Negritude movement. Postwar Paris became a magnet to writers like Richard Wright, James Baldwin and detective novelist Chester Himes, who saw themselves as political exiles from a racist U.S. They fit into a vibrant Left Bank community that maintained close ties with Camus, Cocteau, Sartre, de Beauvoir. The 1960s and '70s saw an influx of African American emigre scientists, photographers, restaurant owners, taxi drivers, diversifying the community that today faces the rise of overt French racism. Stovall, a history professor at UC Santa Cruz, begins with an account of his own transformative experience as an African American in Paris in the early 1980s. His engrossing survey makes a compelling case that these expatriates pioneered a new type of cosmopolitan black community, one that celebrated black identity and helped them achieve a level of success denied to them back home, while they explored different modes of African-based culture from around the world. History of the African American Experience In Paris

I needed this book for studying abroad program on the african american experience in Paris. Each chapter describes several writers, musicians, artists of African American descent and their experience in Paris. This book differs from another book From Harlem to Paris, since each chapter is organized according to an overall theme or general trend of a time. Chapters are as follows, freedom overseas: african american soldiers fight the great war, bringing the jazz age to paris, depression and war: pars in the 1930's, life on the left bank, the golden age of african american literature in paris, new perspectives on race, and african americans in paris today. We find out about the different literary writers like James Baldwin, Chester Himes, and Richard Wright for example. And artists like Josephine Baker and Bricktop, We find that certain parts of Paris like Montmarte and the Latin Quarter serve as places for african americans to gather either in clubs, restaurants and live. We understand the fact that during world war one and two the african americans sought exile in Paris as an escape from American racism, however this trend changes after post war. This is a great foundation reading for anyone who wants to explore Paris in the footsteps of African Americans before them. This book is also easier to read than Michel Fabre's From Harlem to Paris.

I recently checked out this book from my University library for a term paper on the 1920s. It was so informative; I could not put it down! I then decided I had to purchase this book for my library. I highly recommend this interesting and informative book!

Accurate, Historical, Obsessively Factual.

Stovall faithfully captures the beginnings of the African American community in Paris, tracking music, artistic, and literary communities separately. He is attentive to detail in the extreme and vibrantly captures the excitement of Montmartre. However, little is done to bring these observations together or forward any argument. Stovall does more to present fact that persuade. _Paris Noire_ is better as a reference than a 'read' and for someone interested in comparing the time period with the Harlem Renaissance, this book does little to track what events were happening outside of Paris. Nevertheless, the amount of research in this book is amazing. The picture inset features beautiful photos of Tanner and Josephine Baker, cartoons of the time, and is a very welcome addition to the book. Stovall's work is an opening into a relatively uncharted area of African American history but it is not the final word. _Paris Noire_ opens a dialogue that I hope is continued in future books on the subject.

Steamy menage read

A really yummy quick read. The story is great, even if the beginning is a little rushed. There were also moments in the first part of the story where things were slightly unclear.

Kind of a thin story-line, but what do you expect in such a short time. Loads of hot and heavy steam!! Oh girl, have the cold shower ready! Plenty of menage fun. Really smexy read!! Like almost a hardcore read.

I enjoyed the characters and what story was there, I am very interested in seeing where this series is headed. Dragons are not my fav shifters but these guys definitely stoked the fires!

This juicy little story was very hot!

Annie has had a bad experience in the past. She was attacked walking home from a night class and due to that incident, she has become weary of men she doesn't know. After she finished her semester at school, she moved back home and started volunteering at an animal shelter. There, she begins taking care of two baby dragons that were found. Soon, they become like her pets & her attachment to them starts to grow. Not only that, but she feels safe & protected around her dragons. When they've grown too big for her family's yard, she is told by her parents that she needs to get rid of them. Without the heart to do so, she decides to move and buy a ranch so the dragons can stay with her. What Annie doesn't know is that her dragons are actually shape shifters and she is in for a steamy surprise . Brand and Tine has found their mate and they're wasting no time in claiming her for their own.

Dragon's Mate was a fast, fun and smokin' hot erotic romance that will have you smiling one minute and fanning yourself the next. This is a M/F/M (menage) story, but it does also contain bits of M/M/F interactions as well. Being approximately 41 pages, Dragon's Mate made for an easy & light read. It is a fun erotic novella that will surely satisfy your need if you're looking for a hot quickie. Just make sure to have a ice cold drink near when you read or a fire extinguisher for your ereader in case it goes up in flames. Don't say I didn't warn you ;)

I love dragon shifters so I thought I would give this book a try. The beginning started off decent with a little into Annie's background and that she has some PTSD from a previous traumatic attack. Dragons are real and considered exotic animals. Annie adopts two abused dragons and bought land enough for them to live on happily.

Then it starts getting a little creepy. Annie thinks she has a dream with some hot sex, turns out the dragons are really shifters and the reveal their human selves as Annie is swimming naked. Then they have sex with her and Annie just goes right along with it like there's nothing wrong with what just happened. The sex scenes were very graphic bordering on vulgar. It made me nauseous and I ended up having to skip over those parts. It was hot, raunchy sex through the entire book. While some people might enjoy this, I was not one of them.

Read several devotions before deciding to gift this.

My 8 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift, and the idea of a book of devotions is wonderful. ... But this book has many mature ideas that I am uncomfortable with her reading at her age - even with discussion afterward.

Flipping through several pages in January brings up: possibly abusive alcoholism in parents (Jan 1); drug abuse (Jan 6); cheating in school (Jan 10); abusive or deadbeat parents, drug use, alcohol use, sex (Jan 14); porn (Jan 30). While these may be valid things for a teenager to think and worry about, my daughter hasn't been exposed to any of that yet, and frankly, I don't really want to point out all the negatives in the world to her for a few more years.

I will hang onto the book, and re-read it when she is in Jr. High to see if it is more fitting, but for now it is just not age appropriate.

This book assumes that girls are dealing with alcohol, physically abusive parents, and sexually active. Not exactly what my 6 year old girl needs.

This book is presented beautifully and looked perfect for my 10 year old. As we worked through Januarys daily devotions we quickly realised that the adult themes of sex, drugs and even porn were totally unsuitable. Carolyn Larsen what are you thinking?

Best of the trilogy

Interesting series! Neither Mr. Mercedes nor Finders Keepers depended on Stephen King's talent for the supernatural...but both were terrifically suspenseful.

In "End of Watch", King amped up the suspense--palpable throughout the novel--and threw in the stuff that made him famous...eerie supernatural occurrences, made utterly believable by his masterful writing.

But, for me, the real treasures in End of Watch are King's characters. Bill, Jerome and Holly are some of the most realistic and endearing characters King has written, and during the course of the trilogy, you can feel them develop & grow. Holly, especially, is most memorable and wonderfully unique. As for Brady-- the villain we loved to hate in Mr. Mercedes? No letdown there, either!

While "Finders Keepers" wasn't my favorite King novel, I thought "End of Watch" was the perfect conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy.

By the way, while the three novels are best read as a trilogy, King has included enough background in each (without being horribly repetitive) that they could, I suppose, be read as stand alone novels...but you'd be missing out.

Great Conclusion to the Trilogy

I was anxiously awaiting the conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy from Stephen King after blasting through the first two books in the series. The way the second book ended I was expecting something completely different from what King delivered in this conclusion. This is definitely a departure from the rather gritty, real-world detective fiction that the previous two novels presented. Instead King re-entered some of the realms he presented in earlier works like Carrie and the Green Mile. Much more supernatural than parts one and two, but totally engrossing and exciting. The novel is long, as are most King books of late, but it's a rather quick read - hard to put down - just one more chapter. Obviously it won't make much sense if you haven't read the first two books even though King does a good job of refreshing your memory of what went on before. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

My favorite books are when he spends the time to develop ...

I have read many Stephen King books. My favorite books are when he spends the time to develop rich characters with a supernatural edge that can border on reality. I believe he committed himself to a trilogy and struggled to finish it with this book.

I was disappointed in his use of telekinesis in the book which he has used in the past. I believe it was close to "jumping the shark" with Brady's third attempt at mass killings.

In the end, I read it to comple the trilogy. However, when I tell friends that King is a great writer with Rich dialogue, charachrkter development and he goes way beyond horror, I would not recommend this trilogy or this book. He has done and can do much better.
