Her book investigates the cultures of the U.S. and Ugandan evangelical communities and how the flow of U.S.-directed monies influenced Ugandan discourses about sexuality and personal agency. Good preparation for a lifetime habit

I like this booklet for preparing my students, (and my own children) for a lifetime habit of receiving the sacrament of reconciliation. Confession is good for the soul, someone once wrote, and I can say it sure is! This booklet gives children a clearer understand of their own faults and addresses a method for correcting those faults. Of course most seven year olds don't understand serious sin but they do know when they have mistreated a friend or parent and also know when they have been mistreated! Children need a script to follow to give them confidence and this little book does just that. It also includes a prayer section for the children to learn by heart. I have been teaching young children religious education for more than twenty years and I find this an excellent resource and addition to other textbooks.

Great for spiritual retreat

Great book!

This book, second in the Demonata series, was a great follow-up to the amazing thriller of the 1st book. It delivers action, adventure and thrills as Kernel Fleck, a young boy, delves into the horrifying world of demons and Desciples (Demon hunters) to destroy the demons who stole his brother. I find this book a fantastic edition to the already thrilling Darren Shan collection of books. Buy it! (A warning: I am a BIG horror movie fan and I almost threw up from the bloody description, so be careful =)

Great Book

I think that this book was really good and a lot better than the last one. This book takes place before the last book did, and is a lot more exiteing than the other book. In this story, a town where a boy named Kernal is living is visited by a murderous demon. This demon comes through a window opened from his own universe and quickly starts tearing apart the gathered townsfolk. When this demon lays eyes on Kernal's baby brother, something odd happens. The demon runs up, grabs the baby, and runs back through the window. Willing to die to get his brother back, Kernal runs through the window after the demon and ends up in a whole different universe full of strange things and aweful horrors. Kernal finds a group of out of the ordinary people, teams up with them, and attempts to find the demon and get his brother back. He has no idea what he is getting into, otherwise he would have gone right back through the window into his own world.

Demonata #2: The Demon Thief

After reading the first book in Shan's Demonata series I could not wait till the next book was released. I was not disappointed when the book came out. The second book seems to take place some time preceding the first book as one of the characters from the first book is "in training." However, according to the sneak peek of the third book the first narroator comes back to continue his story. The second book does have some gore and sickening discriptions; the narrator even vomits at one point but turns this into an advantace (I'll let you see how for yourself). Overall a very intersting read. Can't wait for the next book.

This thoughtful book by animal trauma specialist Bradshaw draws analogies between human and animal culture to illustrate the profound breakdown occurring in elephant societies. Extraordinarily sensitive and social, elephants' survival has long depended on their matriarchal lineage—now sundered by culling the herds, which disrupts the hierarchy—and their psyches have been broken by prolonged isolation and separation, painful hooks used as training tools and general cruelty. Captured elephants meet the criteria of the psychiatirc handbook DSM for suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Drawing on research on animal trauma, concentration camp survivors and Konrad Lorenz–type ethology, Bradshaw makes a multidisciplinary condemnation of elephant abuse and celebrates those working on rehabilitating and healing the animals—including an elephant massage therapist and the owners of an elephant sanctuary in the Tennessee hills. In the end, anthropomorphizing isn't the issue; Bradshaw says that instead of giving animals human feelings, we should observe that they have feelings that correlate with what we may feel in similar circumstances. Q: How did you become interested in elephants and their welfare?

�

A: Often, when people who work with elephants are asked this question, they answer, “The elephants chose me.” And I have to say that has been my case. From a more rational perspective, my decision to study elephants was compelled by their obvious suffering.� The stress has been so extreme that it has led to such un-elephant-like behavior—what the media refers to as “elephant violence.” Changes in behavior from what is considered normal don't just happen out of the blue; there are reasons for them. I wanted to understand the nature of elephant trauma, the causes of their psychological anguish, and how to help the elephants.

Q: What is it about elephants that inspires you?

�

A: They are honest and straightforward, and prize relationships above all. Elephants embody so many qualities that we humans admire, and offer a model and inspiration for what we can become.

Q: What hopes do you have for the future of elephants?

A: We have to be concerned about the present. It is not just the future, but the conditions under which elephants live today that are so dire. We need to pay attention to the great suffering of individual elephants and other wildlife, and urgently remedy these situations. If we can fix the present, we can fix the future.

A Dose of Reality

In response to the comments by Aldo Matteucci I'd like to inject a dose of current scientific reality into the situation. Matteucci does not appear to be familiar with the most recent neuroscience and comparative psychological research. So, I'd like to correct some of his misinterpretations of Gay Bradshaw's arguments. Matteucci makes the naive claim that the human brain is a "chaotic structure" that seems to be haphazardly put together and, by implication, so much more complex than the brains of other species that inference from humans to other animals is untenable. To the contrary, the available research converges on the finding that all animals, including humans, share the same brain structures related to the processing of emotions and that these structures and their biochemical connections to the rest of the body are among the most conserved evolutionarily. In decades of neuroscientific investigation we have yet to find a single attribute of the human brain that sets it apart qualitatively from the rest of the animal kingdom. Moreover, findings on cognitive abilities in other animals are appearing in well-respected journals practically on a monthly basis showing that so-called uniquely human capacities are distributed across many other species. Dr. Bradshaw's arguments are based on a solid body of scientific evidence, which clearly refutes Matteucci's point.

Might I suggest that the strident nature of Matteucci's criticism be best understood in the context of his archaic argument that by attending to the needs of elephants and other animals we are allowing the "starvation of billions of people". Underlying such remarks is the banal and unsupported perspective that it is "us against them" and that we must choose between humans and other animals. Matteucci appears offended by the notion that the problems faced by other species would be placed on a par with those of humans. In doing so he misses Bradshaw's most profound point that humans and other animals share critical psychological characteristics that make us all vulnerable to damage and trauma. Wrote a college essay on this book and received an A. Revolutionary and breathtaking

Thanks to scientific discoveries that tell us more and more about the lives, abilities and consciousness of non-human animals, we have dwindling justification for drawing a line between humans and other animals. A subtitle for this powerful, deeply moving book might be, "We are them; they are us."

In this sweeping book, G.A. Bradshaw reviews what humans have done to elephants and, perhaps more important, explores what that has meant for elephants and elephant society. I think anyone who advocates for animals will find this a disturbing but deeply satisfying book. Bradshaw reminds us how much we have to learn from elephants which, in the end, will bring us back to ourselves.

About the Author
Lucinda Gray is a Psychologist in international private practice. She has been a Coordinator in the Focusing Institute since 1984, teaching Focusing and practicing Focusing Oriented Psychotherapy. She lives in Costa Rica where she is currently completing a new book: Fast-Track Meditation - The New Healing Path to Spiritual Awakening. It is the best of Mindfulness Practice, empowered by the tools of Focusing. This groundbreaking new work will debut in 2013. A Most Welcome Contribution

Sharing Lucinda Gray's enthusiasm for Focusing and being a Focusing trainer myself, this is a welcome contribution to my Focusing library for several reasons. Given that a wide variety of Focusing styles are thankfully encouraged by "The Focusing Institute", I feel both enriched by and grateful for others sharing what they've personally developed. In Dr. Gray's book, not only are you exposed to her style, but to several other leading teachers' as well, which I believe is helpful for beginners and veterans alike. And key aspects of Focusing are explained/illustrated by different contributors.

I've found that people vary in how they can best learn "Focusing", so I'm pleased to have as many resources as possible to draw upon when teaching an individual or a group. And it's a real treat to have such a variety of excellent resources within this one book.

Although there's a treasure trove of invaluable information here, the only thing I'm not clear about is what is meant by the "four training manuals".

Dr. Gray's offering is a very generous one, both in heart and content, one I'll be turning to time and time again. It's a gift to those of us already within the Focusing community, as well as those newly discovering this amazing life-affirming process.

Excellent. Practical -- Well Founded in Theory

This is a practical, clear, step by step for any psycho therapists who are unfamiliar with the techniques of focusing. It also includes steps that are easy to share with clients for their own work in between sessions.

I was introduced to focusing in the 1980's and am delighted it is more wide spread in use. In my new book What's Wrong With Me? Maybe Not That Much I emphasize the benefits of this technique.

There is good content, but the structure and formatting of the ...

There is good content, but the structure and formatting of the book is poor. I have seen this in other focusing books as well. Editing is the answer. I think that people publishing in this promising field need to understand that they have more potential to make the book attractive and influence by using basic principles of writing that other fields have to employ. Many dharma books in buddhism are good examples.
